Warren Ellis and Jason Howard Team Up with Non-Stop Gritty Action on Cemetery Beach from Image Comics

Sometimes art alone can tell the story without a lot of dialogue. When I got an advance review of Cemetary Beach that hits store shelves September 12th, it was one of those books I had to check out immediately. This is one of those books that the art alone makes it a worthy book. Warren Ellis writing doesn’t hurt either.

After reading page 1, I knew I was going to like this new book.

According to Image Comics solicitation for this new book, “Jason wanted to do an action book, so I wrote something that starts with a conversation in an interrogation room, ignites four pages later, and doesn’t stop until the end of the final issue—which he’s drawing right now, so when issue #1 comes out, the whole series will be in the can,” said Ellis. “It might be the most relentless action book I’ve ever written.”

It seriously won me over after the interrogation room and was pretty much jam packed with action sequence for the remainder of the book.

Michael Blackburn is being interrogated, he’s telling the guard of his world after he claims he’s just going to tell him everything since he doesn’t like pain, to spare him of getting potentially tortured.

I absolutely love the humor in this book, it’s spot on. These interrogation panes gave me the impression that this book is going to be fun when there is dialogue.

From that point on, Michael Blackburn finds himself a local guide which happens to be another locked up patron to escape after taking down the guard in the interrogation room. A guide is needed as he’s unfamiliar with the territory. It’s pretty much just non-stop action from that point all the way to the ending with his new companion, in which I’m sure we’ll all learn more about in upcoming issues.

I absolutely can’t wait for issue #2 now. Seriously, I would write and post more but I’d likely spoil too much.

From the rest of the solicitation from Image’s website:

In CEMETERY BEACH, a professional pathfinder, his only ally a disaffected young murderess, breaks out of a torture cell in pursuit of his worst extraction scenario ever: escaping on foot across a sprawling and secret off-world colony established a hundred years ago and filled with generations of lunatics.

Howard added: “In Cemetery Beach, Warren wrote the perfect book for me as an artist. It’s an insane world filled with old future tech, cool characters, big explosions, and enough heart to make you care. It’s the kind of comics I love reading and REALLY love drawing.”
