Poyo’s Spec and Drek for Judgement Day, August 29th, 2018

That’s right, today is Judgement Day, the day the world was suppose to end and the machines take over back in 1997.

Sadly the fastest processors at the time were only around the 200MHz range, so Skynet didn’t have enough processing power to take over the world yet.

It’s also Michael Jackson’s birthday. How and why do I have all this useless knowledge stuck in my head? Well, it’s also my sisters birthday so this date stands out for me.

This week marks the 5th Wednesday of the month. You all know what that means right? Not a whole lot of stuff was planned or is coming out. Publishers usually plan their monthly books based on the weeks of the month. So when that 5th Wednesday comes around, it’s usually smaller.

DC/Vertigo Pick

I was going to pick the Middleton Cover B out for Batgirl but as much as I like it and the potential it has, I couldn’t pick it over this weeks DC pick.

That would be Joker Daffy Duck Special #1 and particularly the Cover B by Sanford Greene.

What a great cover! I love it, it’s not t-shirt worthy, it’s poster worthy in my opinion.

I’m not anticipating that this will heat up but we all saw that surprise Looney Tune Batman And Elmer Fudd special book heat up with some mad flipping ability. So be cautious on this one and the other few coming out but don’t sleep on them either if they do pick up some heat.

Marvel Pick

Marvel was literally blah this week for me.

I never thought I’d be picking a Fantastic Four book as my pick but you know, the old classics were great.

So this new Facsimile Edition #1 is my pick this week. Apparently they’re even including the original ads in the book. I couldn’t find any information but if they printed it on newspaper stock it would only make this book even better.

The only downside to this book is, why couldn’t they offer it at the original price as well? One would think they would have made this like their True Believers at a $1 each but it’s got a cover price of $3.99.

With that in mind, some shops might not have gone too heavy on these so it’s definitely a book to keep an eye on.

Indie Pick

I have my own theory of Crop Circles. It’s a way for aliens that visit earth to warn other aliens to steer clear of our planet. There’s no intelligent life here and the planet has nothing to offer.

Beyonders #1 from AfterShock dives into the crop circle theories.

So this one is my independent pick this week. Plus there was literally nothing else that grabbed my attention.

A young boy obsessed with crop circles and cryptography finds his boring life turned upside-down when he discovers that all of his conspiracy theories are true, sending him on the ultimate treasure hunt for an ancient secret spanning thousands of years. What is the connection between a lost mountaineer, an indecipherable manuscript, and the lost library of Alexandria? How is this connected to a one-eyed, flatulent Welsh Corgi and endless plates of corned beef sandwiches? Find out in…Beyonders!

Small Publisher Pick

I can’t recall the last time I picked an IDW book as a pick but I guess this is an Oni Press and IDW pick, a mashup of Rick & Morty vs Dungeons & Dragons.

This is a must for any fans of either.

I expect a larger print run for this book however. We all know Oni doesn’t do high ratio variants for their books most of the time but IDW does.

So be on the look out for some of the variants for this book. The Tess Fowler one is a definite pickup if you can find for cheap, could be a quick and easy flip.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

Anyone think Marvel is going a little too crazy with Venom? Don’t get me wrong, I like Donny Cates writing in the primary Venom title. I actually enjoy the back story on the new Symbiote God.

But this new book Venom First Host by Mike Costa just has avoid written all over it. The story description has me yawning already. Ve’Nam is another book I’ll likely check out but probably avoid. Just too much Venom all at the same time for my tastes.

Now I must say, if you do grab a copy of this book, I do love Paolo Rivera’s artwork. His work on Cover B is fantastic. Sadly the book itself is an avoid but I’d have to say Paolo’s cover is the cover art of the week.

Note: I updated this to avoid some confusion on my drek pick as it came off as me referring to the new Venom First Host title being written by Donny Cates, which it is not.

    1. Heh. Not a whole lot else to choose from. Sure Cates writing is awesome but i think theyre going a little overboard with the Venom books now.

  1. As many people(if that’s what you want to call them) that I see every day walking, eating and my favorite DRIVING with some type of electronic device stuck in front of their face. I would say that the machines have already taken over, Judgment Day came and nobody noticed.

    1. The humans and this info age are a fresh pair. Once the humans learn to harness this power properly, we should be okay. The way it has dominated now is just a hiccup in the process of our race (humans) learning to properly use these tools. ?

    2. WALL-E predicted exactly what is happening to humans. We are trashing our planet and only focus on the screen in front of us.

    3. Yep A.King ..I remember growing up we all knew this 5 Percenter( lol look it up its too confusing to get into) but he was always preaching about how the goverment will put tracking chips in peoples hands …well they did they are called smart phones

      1. Working in IT, I get people all the time asking me how they can not be tracked. My answer everytime is.. unplug. Get offline. Get rid of your computer, your smartphone. Be like the Unibomber and go off the grid if you don’t want anyone or any government tracking you.

  2. First Host is Costa the guy that got hijacked who wrote the previous run. I think this was the big arc he was working towards before Cates swooped in. They are just relasing it as a miniseries. Agains, this is not Cates, so why bash a book that he was not involved with at all? Just sick of Venom?

    1. Oh, the way I worded it, was not implying Cates was writing first host, I was just stating on his take in the regular Venom series.

I’m likely not picking up either of the new series. I’m good with reading just one Venom title.

But Ve’Nam might be a good read itself but even that one is a bit much as well.

    2. Also I must admit… I’ve never gotten into Costa’s writing either. I was excited about the Avatar series God Is Dead by Hickman but it was also Costa writing it and pretty much took over for the most part. I think I lasted 5 issues before declaring that book garbage.
