Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday
Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 203rd edition of the open forum!
Back from vacation and back to work. Ugh. Being away isn’t hard, its coming back to all the things you were away from that makes leaving difficult.
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. incredible hulk 181….CGC 0.5…..is worth $850 american.
demand is high….supply is low (obviously)
for those who don’t have it and you have enough scratch…grab it…
9.2 CGC graded sold for $8100 yesterday.
always always always sell your modern age comics and make your $$$ to buy keys
(especially silver and bronze age….copper doing well as well)

    1. Buy moderns, flip moderns that also pay for the moderns you want to keep while making enough to save up for the older silver and bronze keys. 🙂
If you can make the hobby pay for itself, that’s the end goal.
It’s just like NYCC. I use my points for the flights. Then I buy and flip all the goodies from the show that ends up paying for the hotel and food, while also paying for the stuff I want to keep for myself. The trip ends up not costing me money but results in me at times making money. 🙂

  2. First time commentor and I accidentally posted on Poyo’s Board meaning to post here. Sorry Poyo.
Artgerm Catwoman are art. That’s all I got say about that.
    Frisson Wonder Woman is beutificent.
Putri Red Hood great cover and a good time to jump in the series it’s seems with the upcoming changes that could be happening maybe.
Immortal men have an awesome cover so awesome that it’s like Knull is crossing over from an issue. He’s everywhere is he Elric too. The cover is sick I’m on it I don’t care if it’s basically a venom cover.
Superman cover A for me was getting the C on this run but this A is purty. I know most don’t like Rogol Zaar but are you supposed he’s a bad guy right. Trying to kill Superman.
Spider-Man main cover good for me but the other covers are nice make your pick.
Infinity wars same deal. I’m getting main cover. I have all the infinity prime variants and I’m good unless something special comes out.
Venom first host like the series not the variant. Looks weird.
Weapon H cosmic ghost rider is the variant for me. Wicked.
Rags coming out in small press will be worth it just for the babe bikini and guns. What more do you need to speculate. Hello this what we like chicks half naked with guns.
Oblivion song on my pull list begrudgingly I really hope it picks up.
Time to start looking for Captain Britain booksthat tie in with the secret invasion. As a matter of fact I’m grabbing the secret invasion series and hoping that will see some life. I just read the series and I love bendis but boy is that a hard read.
New poster hope you enjoyed it. Skrulls are on the coastline get your affairs in order they could be right next to you and you don’t even know.

    1. “Oblivion song on my pull list begrudgingly I really hope it picks up.”
After I read issue 1 I knew this series would likely turn out like Outcast and like most of his other titles that are sub par. Poorly written and drawn out. Kirkman sadly just wants to milk the cash cow. He now draws in those due to his fame from Walking Dead, it’s the only reason his books have bigger print runs and orders. Oblivion Song #5 only had a 30k or so print run. I can only imagine #6 and #7 are going to be around that number or smaller.
Outcast only pulls in 12k size print runs on the later issues currently. A far cry from the glory days of 80k or bigger that Walking Dead pulled in.

  3. Here are my pickups so far, but may be getting a few more soon…too much this week lol
    Blood Realm #1
Cemetery Beach #1 (set of all 3 covers)
    Infinity Wars #3A
    Journey into Mystery #1A
    Old Man Logan #47
    Poser #1
    Red Hood B cover x2
    Venom #3 3rd print x2
    Weapon H #7B x2

    1. Very nice. And yes, they should have gone ahead and made this into an actual cover. I still don’t see the controversy in this. There’s much worse out there that no one even batted an eye over.

      1. Seems everything it outrage and controversy nowadays…Just have to ride out that storm…and yeah, that should have been a cover! Would have been an instant classic, up there with the likes of Batgirl #23!

      2. A lot of people still butthurt over this cover. Let it go! You may not agree but if it upset so many people, it didn’t need to exist.

        1. One could say the opposite of that statement as well. A lot of people butt hurt and or offended over a possible cover that really wasn’t all that bad either. To each their own. I’m not butt hurt myself, it really doesn’t affect me. I’m a big believer of, If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.

  4. Yea I was snookered in just as re-started my collecting in being told it’s the next big book from the walking dead. Brilliant marketing but will be off my pull list by issue ten. OCD type thing. Happens to best of us.

      1. Spec’inh OM.l 47? Looks really interesting. May pick up the annual if I can find it still laying around for the read as well.

        1. I’ve been going bananas over second and third printings of venom Stegman is killing it and you got to love a book that gives you the urge to buy additional copies just for those cover. Scrumtrulescent.

      1. I’m thinking it could be Lady Mastermind, Emma Frosts sister or Emma’s consciousness from first class telepathically transferred. Or maybe Miss SIn like they say.

  5. 17 years since 9/11. It’s my generations JFK moment. I will never forget where I was. I lived about 5 miles from Ellington Air Force base in Pasadena Texas. Fighter jets flying low all day around the ship channel. I couldn’t imagine being in New York seeing all that in person. Please don’t forget about every first responder.

    1. Went down to GZ a few weeks after it all went down. I had tix to a Mets game, but made a day out of it. Never will forget the scene of all the postings put up by friends and family desperate to find their loved ones who were missing. Also, the Gap across the street had built a glass enclosure of a corner of their shop which preserved the dust that had been engulfed their store that day and completely covered the clothes displays. I think I took a picture, but told everyone about it. Had the opportunity to tour the memorial last year and although the gap store is long gone, the preserved enclosure has become part of the memorial exhibits which brought back memories.
BTW, if you’re in NYC for comicon or another reason, carve out a portion of a day to. Is it the memorial. It is a must see, but probably not for young children.

  6. I don’t know if any of you guys watch American Horror Story. You should, new season starts tomorrow and it looks great.

  7. I was able to pick up Incredible Hulk 181 and 182 about 10 years ago for around $450. 181 graded cgc 3.5 and 182 was cgc 8.0. Looks like the investment will pay off.

    1. Niiiice! I would say so!!! Just curious, since pressing really wasn’t a big thing 10 years ago does that 3.5 of yours have any defects like bends and dents that don’t break color? Might be a good candidate…ya never know.

  8. I went to RCCC this weekend. Highlights include:
    Foil Artgerm Catwoman 3
    Foil Cover 1
    Rick & Morty Portland variant
Adam Hughes Plastic Man comission (his first Plas)
    Geof Darrow Shaolin Cowboy sketch
    Zander Cannon (Kaijumax) Krampus commission
Signatures from Mignola, Starlin, Hughes, Mack, Nguyen, Conway, Cates, Maleev

  9. This weeks pick ups? Not sure what I will get at the comic shop tomorrow but I did pick Captain Britain #1 (with mask) and.Avengers #48 x3 (found some solid mid grades cheap). I did recieve the graded 5.5 FF #49 signed by Stan Lee that I bought last week…. Really using most of my spending money for the next few months but it was priced to sell and with Stan Lee retired from signing…for the time being anyway, I just couldn’t resits. The guy was not an Ebay profiteer…Just selling at a fair price so got it for about 40% less than they normally go for online these days.

  10. So back in 2016, I bought and flipped ten copies of invincible iron man 7 from a shop that had like thirty of them. I bought them at cover probably a month after release, and while they weren’t in perfect shape, they all sold quickly and well. I also picked up three copies online of the women of power variant on release day (also for cover), on a simple hunch. After years of not being able to sell the one I slabbed (or the two raws), I went to list it again and they’re exploding. Joy!
I also sold a few other books I had laying around, and bought a 9.8 of Saga 1 with the money, literally right before they announced the year off. Hopefully that doesn’t drop the price too much. Whatevs, it’s my favorite series, and it’s gonna be dope when they come back.
I’m just picking up my pulls today, and looking for some dollar bin winners. The shop near me has no idea what they have for the most part, and I’ve gotten very lucky there lately. They’re not very friendly though.

    1. I will trade friendliness for scores any day. I have a shop I call my honey hole and the guy who runs it can be nice, or not nice, depending on the second of the day. He gives me stuff sometimes for free and sometimes he yells at me for buying too many copies of a back issue. But I still chance it because of the gems I pull from his back issues.

  11. A lot of interesting books on the shelf this week, but I am more interested to see how Batman Damned does next week. The Lee variant is already going to backorder at Diamond, regular cover is still available. DC has done a lot of promotion for the book, now the question is how much overprinting did they do?
The oddest pick of the week for me is the Absolute Edition of Killing Joke. Somehow a book that was a single-issue prestige format (with over a dozen printings) has become one of the best-selling $19.95 hardcovers the last few years. And now there is a $49.95 hardcover version. How you successfully turn a one issue comic into a $49.95 hardcover is marketing genius. But we have several customers who advance ordered it. Time will tell.

    1. I have several different versions of Killing Joke. One of the books that cemented me as a comic fan back in the day. It is crazy how DC keeps it in print constantly.

      1. This new HC includes multiple versions of the coloring, with the entire issue printed with the original Higgins colors, then again as a recolored version by Bolland. They added in some sketches from Bolland, and the “never before published” script. But it’s still really just one comic turned into a $50 HC.
I own 9 of the printings of Killing Joke. Working on trying to put an entire set together just from what comes into the shop in collections. We buy probably 40 copies a year, but 30-35 of them are 1st print. I get a lot more excited when I see colors that aren’t green. 🙂

  12. venom 3 3rd print. suicide squad &flash b covers marvel team up #65-66 marvel tales #201 buying all marvel tales from #137 until the end of the series. just great stuff punisher macfarlin covers spiderham black costume reprints rick and morty dungons and dragons #1 the ricka nd morty #42 variant blank covers trying to make some decisions about a few things once and for all love you guys thanks for the love and surport blind adam out

  13. Picking up this week:
    Plastic Man 4
    Rat Queens 11
    Unnatural 2 2nd print
    Notes:
The Kickstarter for Simon Bisley’s new sketchbook is now live. While I don’t love the cover, this is an opportunity to get a Biz original sketch in the book if you shell out some additional money. Since I already have a Biz original Lobo, Biz Plastic Man, here I come! (to go with my Skottie Young and AH! Plas commissions)

  14. Pick ups this week:
    Darth Vader
    Red Robin #26 (Putri variant)
    Wonder Woman (Frison variant)
    Champions #24
    Spec pick ups this week:
    Steam Age Wasteland #1 (cover)
Bordertown #1 (variant X2 for cover)
165 Days (Source Point for cover)
    Good hunting everyone!

  15. Just a quick update, Midtown is already limiting to one per person some of the books for next week. Aquaman 40 Middleton & Justice League 8 Williams. Not surprised by the Middleton, but the Justice League 8 caught me off guard. Great looking cover!

      1. I’m sure it was a nice profit anyways. All you can do is set the price and see what happens, nothing wrong with that.

  16. Did anyone notice (or care about) the 1st appearance in Detective Comics today? Lady Firefly (Bridgit Pike) makes her 1st comic book appearance. She 1st appeared on the TV show Gotham.

      1. Not much of a brooks fan. Sometime I like them. Liked the a cover better this week….but every copy I came across has damage, so I’ve passed so far.

  17. Anyone else had issues with the Key Collector App? Mine just quit working about a week ago and will not open any longer.
