Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday
Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 204th edition of the open forum!
Back from vacation and back to work. Ugh. Being away isn’t hard, its coming back to all the things you were away from that makes leaving difficult.
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. better comic book website?? go collect or GPA comics??
    i would say go collect…excellent
SHOUT OUT TO REGIE SIMMONS and his comic book channel on youtube approaching 1000 subscribers….fantastic channel.

    1. I would hold, ’80s Uncanny X-Men issues below 175 will never go “down” in value, you’d at least break even. She might even become Binary one day in the movies if they pass on the mantle.

  2. This weeks pick ups…..
    Mr and Mrs X #3 1:25 1st ProX daughter
    Venom #6
Venom first host #4 1st Cover for new Symbiote.
    ASM Annual #1 Dell Otto
Avengers #7 1:50 first solo and origin GhostRider 1000000 BC
    and the free Batman books.

    1. Good picks..I got a few of the Mr and Mrs X, the Venom #6, First Host #4, Batman 55 Mattina, Aquaman 40 Middleton, Justice League Jim Lee and John Wick #3.

  3. I sent some books out as Media Mail and had them returned to me by the post office. So, is it not possible to send comics and magazines as Media Mail?

    1. Items shipped in media mail are not allowed to have advertisements. Comics have been exempt from enjoying the media mail privileges. Most post offices don’t ask or check, but media mail is subject to inspection. If they randomly inspect and discover their comics, they’ll ship them back.

      1. I doubt it will end up working but I’m currently getting passed up the postmaster chain arguing that comics havent had real ads for years. They’ve said it was based on when you could order things from the ads back in the 60’s/70’s. The “ads” now are usually just previews of upcoming books from the same publisher which they’ve said shouldn’t count. The main sticking point is the random cgc ad…
        Wish me luck!

    1. Ouch…I like being able to pre-order there – Don’t like when they aren’t able to ship one comic in the order and do it at a later date with a nice $5 shipping charge tacked on..You’re right that stuff can be costly

  4. Picking up:
    SIP XXV 6
    $1 bin finds:
    Gen13 Cover #1G (Lin-Gen-rie variant)
Various Creed issues from Trent Kaniuga
    Notes:
This weekend in Portland, OR I will have a table at the Frankenstein Comic Swap. If anyone mentions CHU, I will cut him or her a deal.

  5. So I have been officially put on notice by my boss (read: wife) that as the birth of our child is approaching, I need to reign in some of my comic/toy/fun stuff spending.
With that in mind, this week I am getting:

    Batman #55 Variant
    Batman:Damned #1
    Crude #6

    Ice Cream Man #7
    Justice League #8
    Mister Miracle #11
    NIghtwing #49
    Return of Wolverine #1
    Rick and Morty: Sleepy Gary
    Seven to Eternity #11
    Star Wars #54
    Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1
    Renew Your Vows #23
    The Wild Storm #17
    Thor #5
    Venom #6
    Venom First Host #4
I’m not the greatest listener. If I’m not here next week, you know why! 😉

      1. hehehe as long as she’s not in the room when I take them out of the bag she won’t say anything. She’s really good with me like that. I was actually surprised she said anything, but I had to know it was coming when in the last week I’ve got deadpool and chill, lady deadpool, funko bob ross deadpool, funko iron spider and a few other not comic/toy interests of mine.

    1. ok, so that’s about $80 in comics this week. What’s the expectation here? Cut back by 25%….50%….75%? Hard to measure success without first establishing goals.

  6. Big week of pick ups this week:
    Edge of Spider-Geddon #3 (variant)
Star Wars #54 (action figure variant)
    Venom #6
Batman The Damned (Jim Lee cover)
Junior Horror High (2 copies of Cover A-Breakfast Club parody)
Thor #5 (Cosmic Ghost Rider variant)

      1. Yeah I love North Jersey. Family is from Caldwell, about a 10 min.drive from the Tony Saprano house. Next time I go up I might try to get a quick pick of my 5 year old at the end of the driveway picking up a newspaper in a bath robe.

      1. Its amazing how many of those I found in $1 boxes up till a few months ago. I remembered when you did that video, do you still get that box? I enjoyed those revealings.

  8. Well I couldn’t bring myself to get Batman Damned or Return of Wolverine but I did pick up Batman 55 (b), Injustice vs Motu 3, TT 22 (b), Spidergeddon 3, Venom 6 and New Host 4, House of Waxworks, ASM annual (b), both Punisher Tbs, and begrudgingly Mr & Mrs X 3. No luck on Jr. High Horror.
My back issues for the week for about $40 include Incredible Hulk 419 (full Talos), Swamp Thing Winter Special, TT 20 virgin variant, Cable & Deadpool Annual 1, Daredevil 21 (MJ variant), Deadpool 2 (Klein Variant), Cable & Deadpool 50 (first venompool), Batman Dark Knight III #2 (1:100 Miller Variant). Included in one of those lots is a Cable #1 apparently signed by JRJR but no COA so who knows.

  9. Batman Damned is now sold out at Diamond.
The Jim Lee cover sold out around noon Eastern. The main cover sold out around an hour ago (roughly 930pm Eastern). We’ve received at least 40 calls about it today, and we rarely get more than 5 calls about any one specific book. A typical Wednesday is 60-70 calls asking about 30 different titles. Today it’s nonstop Batman Damned. I suspect our local competitors didn’t order enough and folks are now on the hunt.
I’m frankly surprised. DC sent out advance PDFs to all retailers. I read the whole issue at least a month before FOC just like any other shop owner could have. I’m surprised that a) more shops didn’t go heavy, and b) DC chose not to overprint.

    1. I think people are excited for the first appearance of the Bat-penis. It’s only in the print version. I wonder if it’ll make the CGC label, or if its just a cameo?

  10. Picked up an Amazing Spider-Man 121 CGC 7.5 on eBay for a really good price after negotiating with the seller. I’d say I got it below FMV but he seems happy, so I’m happy. Is this a good grade to get it in if I don’t want to break the bank, or should I have held out for higher? Seeing as how an 8.5 is over $200 higher in bidding, I feel like there’s nothing you can do with an 8.5 copy that you can’t with a 7.5.

  11. the two things I want tosee at this years n.y.c.c. is 1. the daredevil Netflix panel.i love the Netflix shows and can’t wait for this.2. agent poyo must cost. play as the chicken. I am sure if we all pitch in $1-5 chu can buy poyo the chicken costume . poyo must walk around the n.y.c. strets with maska nd costume that would rock love you all blind adam out

  12. Back at it after a break. Picked up everything on my pull list, but the debut of Batman’s wang was sold out at my LCS. Here’s the list:

Batman #55 (Cover B Francesco Mattina)
Batman Damned #1 (Of 3)(Cover A Lee Bermejo)

    Damage #9
Harley Quinn #50 (Cover B Frank Cho)

    100-Page Giant Batman #3
100-Page Giant Justice League of America #3
    100-Page Giant Superman #3
    100-Page Giant Teen Titans #3

  13. Hard to say where things are going, but plenty of live eBay auctions indicating the Lee cover of Batman Damned is around $30 and the regular cover is around $20.
It still boggles my mind that so many retailers slept on this issue. The mainstream media coverage of the Bat-Wang has certainly driven demand. When a comic book makes the late night talk shows people will come out of the woodwork to buy it. But even without that added demand, it seems like many retailers just didn’t want to deal with a magazine-sized release. I’ve spoken with several dealer friends who ordered just 3 or 4 shelf copies.
