Wednesday
Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)
We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.
The 211th edition of the open forum!
As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. remember the days when preacher #1 went for around $400 for a raw issue on eBay a few years back. now $150 if you’re lucky for mint condition copies.

  2. Waiting to see what the Mattina/Mcfarlane cover for Spawn 291 looks like. No leaks on eBay yet. Could be a sleeper.

    1. The cover for #293 looks pretty good. The blood splatter is insane. and there’s a virgin variant for it too at cover proce

    2. Im fairly certain that the McFarlane/Mattina cover for Spawn #291 is just a virgin B cover of cover A. Ive looked at both and cant see the difference other than the trade dress. But Midtown has cover A as Mattina and cover B as McFarlane/Mattina. I honestly think Todd only did the inks for cover B. PS. Mattina was born to do Spawn covers.

      1. I got my Batman 181 back from cgc today. Solid 4.5. Honesty better than I expect it. I got it out of a five dollar silver age box about four years ago

  3. I picked up a nice newsstand copy of Alf #1 today. Hey, BA. Go get them cats. Lol
I also nabbed a Tec 532 in NM for about $10 US. It has a fantastic Joker cover. Mr. J is riding a Joker faced train with Bats hogtied on the tracks. Straight to PC.

  4. 1983 Rocky, Clubber, Thunderlips, Apollo unopened vintage toys for my husbands birthday this week. Started Christmas shopping already, found its way easier to get the hot toys weeks before Black Friday. PlayStation Classic, and a slime pooping Unicorn checked off the list.

  5. Absolutely nothing comic-related this week. Maybe this reflects why the forum is so slow this week. I bought Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets tickets for the Seattle show. ’68-’72 Pink Floyd is my jam. I hate going to Seattle, but bought round-trip train tickets and booked a hotel for the night. I’m getting hit hard with buying concert tickets lately: Crystal Method, Metallica, ELO, Sun Ra’s Arkestra, the Orb. Contemplating but haven’t bought tickets for the Reverend Horton Heat (3 nights), Magic Sword, and Peter Murphy’s 40th Anniversary of Bauhaus.

    1. Awesome concerts and way better than buying some of the spec books in the last couple of weeks. Way jealous of Crystal Method and Peter Murphy. Would love to see both of those groups. Crystal Method’s opening music to Replacement Killers is one of my favorite movie scenes ever. That movie also has a great song by Death in Vegas-Rocco (Sing for a Drink Mix)-very hard to find BTW.
I opted out of buying books this week also in favor of getting tickets to a screening of Dario Argento’s original Suspira with Goblin performing the music for the movie live at small local venue. Always loved Goblin since 1978’s Dawn of the Dead.

      1. I have seen Peter Murphy before. I think I have mentioned my love of Bauhaus and everything that has come out of it. In fact, a little band called Nine Inch Nails opened for him back when they were essentially nobodies.

      2. Goblin just performed two shows where I live, one with the screening of Suspira and one after the screening. I missed both, but I recently had a chance to meet Alan Howarth, who orchestrated many John Carpenter soundtracks, and Lloyd Kaufman, the director of the Toxic Avenger and the Class of Nuke ‘Em High. Kaufman was here for a premiere showing of Return to Return to Nuke ‘Em High.
If you like ’80’s movie and TV soundtracks, I recommend giving Magic Sword a listen.

        1. Kaufman is a character. I have met him several times at NYCC. Need to remember to take a Movie next year to get him to sign. He isn’t getting any younger.

        2. Have you ever checked out the Cool World soundtrack? Not a great movie but the soundtrack is incredible. My all time favorite movie album is Repo Man

      3. I thought I was the only person who liked the Cool World soundtrack! That being said, the local theater showed another Ralph Bakshi movie, Wizards, with the soundtrack composer in attendance for an lp soundtrack release. I picked it up, had it signed, and have it framed. I love the Wizards poster which is the same image as on the lp.
I am fortunate that there is a local theater that is non-profit. They are able to do all sorts of weird things like show 70mm & 35mm movies, like Heavy Metal. This weekend there is a practical effects festival with Rick Baker (American Werewolf in London & Harry & the Hendersons) and Chris Walas (Gremins creator) in attendance. They show Saturday Morning cartoons, grindhouse movies (I saw Pam Grier), Kung-Fu movies, and silent movies with live organ accompaniment. Quentin Tarantino made an appearance for the Hateful Eight. I saw a 35mm showing of Repo Man there last year when Harry Dean Stanton passed away.

        1. And no, the sound track is really that cool. I used to listen to it going to bed. Couldn’t sleep without it for the longest time. Weird. It didn’t make me sleepy but put me in a relaxed state.

      4. The non-profit theater just bought one of the the last video stores in Portland, turning it into a non-profit too. The collection of videos at this video store contains some movies where they are the last, only copy in existence. Part of the non-profit video store will be to preserve, show, and rerelease these movies. It has a lot of movie memorabilia on display like the knife from Psycho, the building prop used in Blade Runner and Ghostbusters, and the latex prop used for the head of the dude who got shot in the back seat of the car in Pulp Fiction.

      1. I missed the last Bauhaus/NIN tour. I had just switched jobs and it was my first night at the new job. I’ve seen Peter Murphy solo at least twice (if not 3x, I’m old and can’t remember), Love & Rockets once, and Poptone twice now. I have a couple of Poptone signed posters (Daniel Ash & Kevin Haskins).

      2. PopTone is still touring. Go see them. They do Tones on Tail and Love & Rockets material. The only difference between Tones on Tail, Love & Rockets, and PopTone is the bass player.

      1. Sold out of my 4 A covers of Harley 42s, and two of my B covers. One B cover left and it’s not the cleanest. Did not find anymore this past week at shops. Snapped up.

        1. I finally listed mine plus my Rags #2 and I picked up a set of Iron Man 10-18. The 10 is a variant. Listed them as a lot. 10,11, and 13 are the keys out of that set. Paid $16 for the 10-18.

  7. Did anyone notice if the Deathstroke Mattina covers were in bad shape? Spine ticks on some…but all copies had feathering (long vertical color break) along the spine edge. I was looking for a 9.8 copy as I have another on order, and probably flipped through 15 or so and they were all like this, so I passed on them.

  8. Today’s Haul:
    Rags 2 (already flipped)
    Spawn 291 (virgin)
    Back Issue Bin Finds:
Young Avengers 1 (1st Kate Bishop) $5.99. Shop had 3 but would not let me buy the other two at $5.99…said he had to keep copies for others customers…I think he realized I was “stealing”them at his $5.99 price tag.
Young Avengers 6 (x2, 1st Cassie Lang) for cover
Captain America 25 (x2, Falcon becomes Captain) for cover
Captain America 34 (Bucky becomes Captain)
