Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)

We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.

The 219th edition of the open forum!

Happy New Year! Thanks for all the support. Hang over time is done and now on to the comics. (I don’t really drink so no hang over for me.)

As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  2. Found a 1:300 Grumble variant today sitting on the new comics shelf at Newbury Comics. Quickly snatched it up and checked it over to make sure it wasn’t some 2nd printing. I don’t think they have one for that cover, or any 2nd prints out yet, so should be legit. Not the best shape as it’s been handled a bit (NM- maybe) but his was selling on eBay for $50+ a few weeks ago. Will see what I can flip it for…

  3. Back issue pickups!
    Devil May Cry #1 $4.50
    Infinite Crisis #5 (2 copies) $4.50 ea.
    Infinite Crisis #5 (2nd print) $4.50
Annihilation Conquest Wraith #1 (2 copies) $3.50 ea.
    Dark Horse Presents #24 (2013) $8.50
    Atomahawk #0 $5.00

  4. A lot of these links go to TFAW, and I think some of you order (or have ordered) from them lately. I pre-ordered three copies of a comic (single order), Imhad tompay extra for the backing boards, and they shipped it in the most flimsy cardboard mailer, not a gemini mailer like every other big online new comic seller does (e.g., midtown, sanctum sanctorium, unknown comics). It arrived bent at 2 of the corners and one of the books is damaged as a result. The others seem to be ok.

Is this a normal practice for them? To not use robust mailers designed for comics, like the Gemini? I swear I’ve ordered from them in the past and got comics in a Gemini or similar mailer.

Not to mention the comic I bought was a variant cover they displayed/posted, and it ended up being a different cover and they switched it after I had made the order. Not sure if they got misinformation from diamond or something….but that also pissed me off as I bought 3 copies only because I liked the cover that ended up being something I don’t like at all.

So I’m looking to send them back but not sure if they’ll be receptive to my complaints. Definitely never ordering from them again. Very upset.

    1. It’s happened to me before. If you order 3 or 4 comics, not enough to be put in a box, they will be ruined.

    2. I am upset more often than not when I used to buy from online shops. I try to avoid buying online at all costs these days. I am lucky to have a plethora of shops around me, but I understand that is not available to everyone.

      1. I had that same issue within the past several weeks. Pre-ordered 3 comics with 2 back issues. They sent 1 copy of a back issue on its own and it arrived bent in that mailer. After I contacted them, they had me send pics of it and then replaced the comic free of charge.

    3. I only use Gemini to mail my comics in, and I am just starting out as an online shop as opposed to e-bay only. Don’t understand why a big operation like TFAW wouldn’t do the same, especially since they buy in bulk and probably get mailers at an incredibly good discount. Sorry to hear about your situation.

  5. How about some sort of “2019 Predictions” thread? Such as…Who do you think will be a “breakout artist” of 2019? It could be a relatively new up-and-comer or maybe someone who’s been around awhile but really catches fire this year? Any thoughts?

    1. That’s a cool idea for a poll. My vote would be in-hyuk lee or Gang-Hyuk lim. They’re getting noticed more and more. Have they truly broken out yet?

  6. I found a new honey hole, about an hour away from me, last week. I went there and spent 3 1/2 – 4 hrs digging through there boxes. There was some good books to be found. they had a bunch of ASMs from 250-297 that were all NM for $2 (cdn) each. I filled some big gaps in that run for my legacy run. Every book they had (approx 200 long boxes, if not more) was all in beautiful shape. 2019 is looking to kick off on the right foot, for me, this year.

      1. That sounds delightful, Wells. South America is a beautiful continent. I have never been. I enjoy the equal 4 seasons that I get where I live.

      1. I don’t divulge my honey hole locations, sorry. If you are in Southern Ontario, you should be able to find the location on the interweb, using a little due diligence.

      2. The large volume of long boxes and high quality sounds familiar. Would you say that this place is downstairs?

      3. I have a couple. They’re small shops no one frequents…not sure how they stay in business…I just came across a few boxes of unorganized moderns that contains some recently hot issues…more on his below.

But no one gives up their honey hole…otherwise it may no longer be a honey hole…

        1. Yes he does. I think he enters every project knowing the entire story ahead of it ever getting published. I wish other writers took the same approach.

      1. With East of West and Paper Girls both ending. I’m going to need to find 2 new titles for my pullbox or maybe I’ll just wait a little while until I find something interesting. I do like it when writers start something with a set story and follow it to the end.

        1. It’s too bad Hickman couldn’t follow through with Dying & the Dead like he did with East of West.

Talk about a great book with so much potential. It quickly became my favorite book after the first issue, then the letdowns started to occur with it. What was initially a 10 issue mini-series, should have already been finished by now. Seems like it’s more on Image than Hickman from what I’ve read but who knows..

    1. I prefer the beginning middle and end format. I wish there were more of these from marvel and DC. I’d much rather more say, 12 issue stories than ongoings. Like this year it would be 12 issue stories from these characters, than next year it would be a different group, etc. Less character fatigue and more opportunities for b and c level characters to have compelling stories.

  7. I have decided that I am going to invest in a 9.6 or better Savage She-Hulk #1. That is my 1st key that Im shooting for in 2019. I find Im becoming a Jen Walters fan. I enjoyed her book that was cancelled a little while ago. Im also going to put together a run of The Sensational She-Hulk this year. There are some great 4th wall breaking covers in that series. I want them all. And lastly, I will be looking to put together a full run on Harley Quinn vol.1 for my PC. I think Im also going to look into making some CGC submissions this year, for resale purposes. I want to explore that avenue a bit this year. Those are my comic goals for 2019.

    1. Very nice. I was a huge fan of Sensational She Hulk and have a lot of She Hulk runs. Not sure why but the character always resonated with me.

      1. Nick, Tony has always been a sucker for a strong female with an education. Can’t blame him, what other two things are hotter?

  8. I had a very successful 2018. Batman 223 and 251 were ones i thought I would not be obtainable, but found a way to acquire, and I’m getting them slabbed in yellow by cbcs with Adams and O’Neil signatures…been with CBCS for 6 months now….some day…

Looking ahead to 2019 I don’t have any real keys. The ones I really want now are going to require some flipping and reinvesting for a while…ASM 14 (green goblin) and Detective 168 are my grails now.

    1. Yes, I knew this when I submitted them. But with fast passes I thought I’d get them before X-mas (submitted early August). At he time I wanted the slimmer case without the Newton rings…still do, but I think cgc has been much better lately about avoiding the Newton ring issue. Not sure why I paid the extra $10 each now…wasted $$.

So I wait…will be interesting to see how long it takes. I did add pressing, and now I know there’s a fast pass on pressing too…so they’re probably still sitting there waiting to be pressed as everyone continually jumps the line ahead of me…

      1. Yeah, and now they hav a fast pass for pressing….it’s like their taking in $$$ through their own ineptitude! Meanwhile my comics are in the equivalent of the phantom zone for pressing as everyone jumps the line on me…

  13. So, I’m currently sitting in the hospital while my wife is in labour! The most exciting boring time I’ve ever had!

    1. I brought books with me both times. Had my first kid and I was a champ. Doing guided meditation with my wife. Telling her when the contractions were coming on (she was on a monitor) and all that. Second child I passed out when they said the baby was crowning. Congrats brother. Welcome to fatherhood.

      1. Thanks Tony! I’ve got this week’s books and some digitals to catch up on. We’ve been watching Batman the animated series on my laptop. So far I’m in charge of plugging and unplugging all her stuff when she has to pee.

  14. CW has ordered a Batwoman pilot. 24 sales on eBay of 52 Week 11 so far. Including my set of 7 and 11. I have another set (not for sale) That includes a 9.8 grade week 11 I had pulled out of a back issue bin a couple years back.
