Things I Like and Don’t Like for the Week of January 9th, 2019

It’s that time again, where I tell you what’s really grinding my gears for the week of January 9th, 2019.

Some weeks it’s mostly likes, other weeks it’s dislikes.

So what’s grinding my gears this week?

Young Justice from DC

I get it DC, I get where you’re going with the new Young Justice title but come on, some of these young characters are just a little far fetched.

Is it that Teen Titan’s is not hip enough that we need need a new team of teen super heroes all looking like punk rock hipsters? Maybe I’m just getting old. Maybe I’m just not hip enough but this series sounds and just looks stupid and it’s not because Bendis is writing it.

Did they learn nothing from the new Titan Crush? I think the one that looks the most ridiculous is Superboy out of them all. Superboy with a bad boy leather jacket? I find it also odd they do a specific cover for each character except the two new ones, Jinny Hex and Teen Lantern.

Thanks but no thanks.

Captain Marvel Relaunch

You can guess it, Captain Marvel is being rebooted with a new #1, just in time before the new movie makes it to our theaters.

I expect Captain Marvel will be a huge box office movie but yet they did no justice with the covers for the relaunch.

Alex Ross is usually great at covers. As it’s not terrible, it’s just not that good if you ask me. He really didn’t hit the same level he usually does for other cover art in the past. His Mighty Captain Marvel #1 Variant was a much better cover if you ask me.

The Adam Hughes just looks weird with her eyes looking up, like they’re rolling into the back of her head. If he changed the eyes, this cover would be the best one out of the lot.

The regular cover by Amanda Connor and Paul Mounts should be the type of cover they use for the kids version of Captain Marvel if you ask me but even then, I wouldn’t want to use it, it would scare the kids away. It’s just not that good. The way they depicted her face just makes her look weird. It’s the type of face you use on a villain.

Man Without Fear

Is the new Man Without Fear #2 out this week hinting at a possible replacement for Daredevil in the near future?

I’ve already claimed I would totally welcome Blindspot taking the reigns as Daredevil until eventually Murdock comes back but in this issue, it seems as if Matt has totally killed Daredevil with any hope of returning as the vigilante hero for Hell’s Kitchen.

Blindspot on the other hand still believes in Daredevil. Check out the 5 page preview below and judge for yourself. Are we going to find another person taking over duties as Daredevil? Will it be Blindspot or will the future issues of Man Without Fear bring forth another possible replacement?

Blindspot made his first appearance in All-New All-Different Marvel Point One #1 which was more of a brief preview to his appearance in Daredevil #1.

That’s really all I got this week. What are you liking or disliking this week so new into the 2019 year so far?

  1. I just got a 45 day notice to vacate right after the holidays, so they can turn my place into a vacation rental. Really grinds my gears! If anyone in the CHUnivese would like to help me get through this hard time I have a Walking Dead #1 PGX 9.6 1st print I’m looking to get rid of last 3 9.6s on eBay sold for $1499, $1400, $1500 I would take $1200 so I can come up with a deposit for Feb 1st and you can get a good deal on a copy of TWD. Will ship it insured with signature confirmation or we could go through Anthony if need be.

    1. Ouch. Makes sense though, I think I was like about a hundred yards from your current place when I vacationed this past summer. Great location for vacation rentals.

      1. I had a CGC TWD #1 9.6, I have a CBCS 9.6 Signed by the Punisher, and I have a PGX 9.6. Out of all three CGC looked the worst and was sold first.

  2. I actually bought the 100 copies of captain marvel 1 to get all the variants and have pre sold half the variants for my investment so I get a slew of the reg covers and a few variants free…really considering getting my own diamond account if I could do that once a month I’d be set. I agree not Alex ross’ best work.

    1. That cover A is the worst though. Hughes and Ross variants aren’t terrible but just aren’t that appealing to me. I ordered the Movie Variant for myself, probably since Brie Larson made it to my fav female celebs list when she was in Kong Skull Island..

    2. Preselling books is risky business. If the Captain Marvel variants that you ordered come damaged, thats a big headache.

  3. I think its Carols open mouth, on Hughes Captain Marvel cover, that is throwing it off. She looks to bewildered.

  4. Matt will probably be gone until Disney can launch a new TV series after the 2 year Netflix exclusivity period ends. It’s what Marvel does with many of their characters that they can not use for their films/shows (FANTASTIC FOUR, push for Inhumans over X-men, etc.)

    1. Probably. That’s why they might be able to get away with making another character fill in as Daredevil in the meantime.. but who knows what the contracts detail..

  5. I am getting the CApn Marvel #1 Tsai cover, not for spec obv, but because it’s the best one imho. I actually really like it but no one mentions it. I also like the Young Justice covers A, the Putri and the Wonder Girl one…guess I’m jsut a sucker.

    1. The Tsai isn’t bad but I certainly agree it’s better than the others (except the movie variant, that one is still the best I think but it’s not really art since it’s just a photo).

    1. Meh, it’s an exclusive variant. Isn’t he selling these from his own website store? They’re Captain Marvel as Mary Jane.. 😉

  6. Not a fan of store variants either but by far the best Captain Marvel 1 cover is the Nakayama LoSH 23 homage.

  7. That Ross cover tells me that the guy is stretched pretty thin. It looks like a sketch page that he worked up to meet a deadline.
