Things I Like And Don’t Like for the Week of March 13th, 2019

It’s that time again, where I tell you what’s really grinding my gears for the week of March 13th, 2019.

Some weeks it’s mostly likes, other weeks it’s dislikes.

So what’s grinding my gears this week?

Facsimile Editions + MARVELous Monday

You know, a couple of weeks ago I covered an old classic Marvel book in my MARVELous Monday article.

I had no idea that they were planning a facsimile of that very book in March Previews.

Marvel Feature Defenders #1 Facsimile Edition

Defenders Marvel Feature #1 Facsimile Edition

When Doctor Strange faces a threat to Earth so big the Sorcerer Supreme can’t handle it alone, he calls on two allies from his past: Namor, the Sub-Mariner, and the Incredible Hulk! Can these three powerful individuals find a way to work together to thwart…the Omegatron?! Or will their forceful personalities get in the way of victory? And assuming they survive, is there any chance they’d be willing to make a habit of this? Relive the
issue that united three titans as the Marvel Universe’s greatest non-team – one Doctor Strange would name the Defenders! It’s one of the all-time great Marvel comic books, boldly re-presented in its original form, ads and all! Reprinting MARVEL FEATURE (1971) #1.

That makes me smile!

SXSW

I’m sure most people love SXSW who come to visit to goto all the panels, shows and such, but for those who live in Austin, most of us despise this time of year.

The traffic for this town is already bad enough, pack on thousands and thousands of more visitors and you just want to leave town instead of sticking around.

Johnny Blaze is Back….   I Hope for Good!

I never jumped on the Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider bandwagon. It just never clicked for me. Maybe it was the style of art. Maybe he just came off as a bit cheesy for me.

So I was happy to see Johnny Blaze make an appearance in Avengers #16.

I hope this is a sign of the original Ghost Rider. We need more original Ghost Rider.

Captain Marvel

I watched Captain Marvel earlier this morning and I was quite pleased with it. I’d say it’s a 9/10 myself. I thought they did a pretty good job sticking to her origin since they had to skip the whole part of her being Ms Marvel and had to go straight to Captain Marvel.

I must say, this has me pumped more now for Avengers Endgame next month.

That’s all I’m liking and disliking this week. Let us know what’s grinding your gears in the comments.

  1. 7/10… Brie was a bit too stoic and I needed more Skrull deception otherwise it was a decent watch

    1. I thought that she was a little jarringly stoic too – but then my ex-Air Force friend said “have you ever talked to an AF pilot, they are all like that – she nailed it”. So I guess there was some reasoning behind it XD

      1. Yeah, I had an uncle in the Air Force so now that I think about it myself, she did kind of nail it. I guess we can’t say that for all people who were in the Air Force but I thought she did a great job as Captain Marvel.

The movie still beats any DC movie so far by a landslide.. I still rank Captain America Winter Soldier as my top Marvel movie so far. Black Panther isn’t far behind. The first Iron Man is up there, first Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 probably round up the top 5 for me. I must say though, I just enjoy the Marvel Movies. I go in without an expectations and I just avoid Rotten Tomatoes and other reviews. I simply review it myself when I see it and ignore anyone else’s review as it’s just a matter of opinion.

  2. Ugh. Just imagine living on the main road off the freeway to Coachella.
    Yeah. No.
I gripe any moment I can about big events like that.

  3. Captain Marvel was a little flat for me. I give it a 7/10…it was ok, still better than any of the ant-man movies

  4. Facsimile editions are awesome! Didn’t get to see cap marvel yet but everyone I know if giving it the thumbs up

  5. I find most origin movies boring and Captain Marvel follows that formula to a T. Doesn’t understand powers, can’t control powers, find out why they have powers, have a test near the end where they realize their full power insert 10 mins of full power fight scene end movie. As for where it ranks origin story wise, Better than Thor1, better than Cap America1, Better than Edward Norton Hulk, better than maybe on par with Antman1, worse than Ironman1, worst than GOTG1, Worse than Spider-Man Homecoming, worse than Dr Strange, worse than Black Panther. As for skrulls being the main antagonistic phase 4 looks like holes were punched in that theory. There was a big backlash to this movie because of some comments by Brie and rotten tomatoes removed over 50000+ bad reviews attacking this movie, I heard this got Disney’s attention and Scarlett Johansson was called in to film and reshoot more for endgame and replace some Brie Larson Captain Marvel scenes with Black Widow scenes. They don’t want the Captain Marvel problem to spill into Endgame due to the close release dates.

    1. For us comic nerds… We could do without origin stories for movies introducing new heroes but since 99% of the movie goers don’t know squat about them, its a good way to intro them… Particularly into this vast MCU that all tie in together in a way.

      1. years ago, movie theaters had cartoons along with two features, news and short subjects. Start each marvel movie with a 7 minute animated short to tell origin and bring newbies up to speed. 7 minute animation is cheaper than 1/2 hour special effects sequences where origin is retold (differently according to which person is directing) and it prevents hollywood types from doing things like adding sandman or anyone else from being erroneously added to the origin story.
