Poyo’s Spec and Drek for March 13th, 2019

Another Wednesday is upon us. We spec and I drek, then we spend our hard earned cash on the comics we want to flip, collect and read.

Last week ended up being a little more exciting than I thought it would be. We got a secret variant that took off on the secondary market, despite it being the Ziggy Pig book. Immortal Hulk is still on fire. So what’s in store for us this week? Let’s speculate shall we?

DC/Vertigo Picks

Kelley Jones is known for his Batman art but I must say this new Justice League Dark #9 is pure Jones awesomeness if you ask me.

Edit: This is actually not a Kelley Jones variant cover but a Clayton Crain variant for JLD #9.

Sure there’s an awesome Catwoman #9 and Supergirl #28 Killer B covers by Artgerm this week with another Liefeld hideous cover (we’ll get to that later).

This is my favorite cover this week. I don’t expect it to heat up, it’s just one to grab for the personal collection.

Marvel Pick

It could be Marvel hyping it’s own book, throwing in some extra variants and with one being a blank, but this weeks pick goes to Amazing Spider-Man #17 .

They’re promising a big Kraven story and now it’s come in the Hunted starting in this issue.

So without seeing any spoilers or any sneak peeks, I’m going out on a limb with this pick.

Indie and Small Publisher Picks

There is absolutely nothing on the indie market that catches my eye this week. It’s a pretty small week in that department.

But we do have the new Assassin Nation #1 hitting shelves out from Image comics.

They, as in Image, must have a lot of faith in this book as I’ve read it’s a book retailers can return. It’s definitely a book I intend to check out.

That’s it for this smallish week for the picks.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

Liefeld sure is making my life easy for these Drek picks. Last week it was his botched job for Justice League, this week it’s Superman on issue #9.

I mean, seriously, what’s wrong with this cover art? For one, Superman’s hair must have so much gel in it because look at that cape? What about that right fist? Looks like it got in a fight with some Botox and the Botox won.

Whoever at DC is approving these covers must lose their job, these are just awful.

  1. That JLD #9 is a Clayton Crain cover originally solicited for #10 (you can see his sig). It’s listed the same way at Midtown.I’m very confused!

    1. You’re right. I thought it looked a little odd to be a Kelley Jones but yeah, that’s a Crain variant for JLD #9 after I blew it up with a better look.

  2. I didn’t think it was possible, but Liefeld seems to be getting worse and worse as the years progress. I didn’t know an artist could have less than zero talent, but here one is. Jeez.

  3. That Superman cover makes me cringe. Especially how wonky the ‘S’ symbol is and his neck/traps showing outside of the suit seems off kilter with the shoulders inside the suite. I’m not one to nit pick art like that but it’s glaring

  4. The index finger on Supes left hand and the thumb on the right must be the villains in this issue. They are massive! Should be listed as a first appearance.

  5. 5 things wrong with that Liefeld Superman cover.

    1. The cape is going one direction and the hair going the other way. And zero movement on the cape.

    2. The right hand has such a fat thumb and the position of it is a little off.

    3. The left hand. Big fingers with a small thumb. What’s up with that Liefeld?

    4. The S symbol. There is no shape in the S. It doesn’t hug the chest and make the shape.

    5. No 3D movement in Superman he looks so plane and flat.

Sorry Liefeld but as a Superman fan, you suck at drawing him.

    Just my opinion…

  6. I bet he was concentrating on drawing some next level super feet and just half assed the rest, but the editor cropped it to mid thigh out of habit.
