Wednesday Open Forum

Wednesday

Wednesday, the best day of the week, new comic book day. It is like your birthday in the middle of each week (well, one where you buy your own presents.)

We open things up to hear from you. A free for all.

The 237th edition of the open forum!

The new forum is coming. We have been testing it and it is working pretty good. It will integrate with CHU once complete. More to come on this.

As always we also want to hear about your weekly pickups.
So, What were your pick ups?
What had disappeared off the shelves?
What was sitting on the shelves?
What back issue deals did you grab?

  1. Last week was so non-spec I just focused on back issues. Likely to do the same this week. I don’t have lcs’s around me that carry enough to get any ratio variants.

At least I can save a little money…although if I find a Thor 337 in decent condition that hasn’t been marked up to the day’s price I might have to grab it…

    1. I’m gonna pickup a couple copies of new agents of atlas, and definitely going to try and find some variants if my shops order enough for the incentives.

    2. Any reason why Thor 337 is heating up? Any more than, you know, every last book on the market as usual I guess.

        1. Throg to follow. Stormbreaker’s already in Infinity War with a Groot handle. PET AVENGERS ASSEMPLE!!!!!

          1. Stormbreaker hasn’t been held by Bill yet. It’s that combo that’ll drive it to peak again. See what Cap holding Thor’s hammer and iron man wearing the infinity gauntlet did for those related comics?

            1. I was able to snag a high grade Thor 338-339 a few weeks ago for $15 total. I have a 337 currently being pressed before being submitted for grading.

    1. I’m really digging that cover as well. The colors on it pop. I saw BTC is selling 9.8s for $59 the other day. Seems there’s some interest for it.

  2. I’ve been eyeing a 6.0 white pages cgc copy of Ghost Rider #1 at my shop and finally pulled the trigger. Wasn’t a “steal” or anything ($180) but I like buying local/owner of the shop & I’ve always wanted it. I was scared it will get to an out of price range with the upcoming shows/emphasis on either Ghost rider or Son of Satan so I bit the bullet. It’s a great looking book & I love the cover!
Perhaps one day I’ll have the funds to get a Marvel Spotlight 1st to go next to it.

    1. Nice book! Congrats! Always awesome adding a new key to the collection! Have fun saving for that Spotlight #5! Will be a great day when you finally take that home!

    2. I bought one for 20 cents about 30 years ago…sold it for about $3 a few years after that to buy some worthless comics…probably multiple copies of x-force #1.

      1. I paid $12 for my Ghostrider #1 $50 both times I bought Marvel Spotlight #5 8 years ago, I sold one for $90 and re purchased the book after seller regret. Today’s prices are insane for everything I couldn’t afford 1/20th of my collection if I were to buy it today.

        1. I bought a silver surfer 1 cgc 5.0 and a fantastic four 49 that looks like a solid vg+. Both books cost a total of around $750. Thought I’d invest in these before the surfer debuts in the MCU. I think there’s room for growth there and I’ve always just loved the silver surfer.

          1. I’m targeting a mid grade FF4….still accumulating funds…have a few comics at cgc that I’m hoping when they return they’ll get me there.

  3. Didn’t get too much new stuff this week. Looking forward to Agents of Atlas to see what the new character are all about. I did find a CBCS Eternals #16 9.8 for $92 after shipping. That should be a pretty good flip as more info on the movie eventually gets released. Thinking about keeping it but then I would want all 9.8’s. Not sure I want a 9.8 set that bad. Outside of that trying to find more Thor annual #1 for a good price. Found a few lower to mid grade not long ago, but prices are moving on it. That book has been heating up pretty good the past couple of months for sure! Not many on Ebay or Mycomicshop and none Milehigh or Amazon that I could see.

  4. Anyone a lawyer here? So I had a trace on the “so-called lost” money order to Pgx, and it came back cashed by them after they sent it back. Emailed them, no word from them yet. What’s my next step? Since BBB doesn’t have them listed and tried to, should I contact their local police and file a report on them or do I go through USPS to file mail fraud charges. (I used a USPS money order and have evidence that they cashed it on the USPS form letter and scans).

    1. I would normally say contact the money order company first to see what they can do. Contact postmaster next to see what he can do.

    2. If it’s a USPS money order, go through them first. And then police if necessary.

But sad to say this is about the hundredth scumbag story I have heard about PGX since they started. From selling their own graded books to purchasing books on the secondary market to grade and resell to intentional labeling of restored books as unrestored, the beat goes on.

  5. We received 25 extra free copies of Agents of Atlas this week. Wonder how many Marvel/Diamond decided to give away for free to prop up the print run. I’m not going to complain, and I like when publishers put their money where there mouth is (like the free copies of Die Die Die when that debuted). But it’s a little odd that the one book solicited as having first appearances is the one they just give away.

      1. I read the variants are only for the original order. So no extra #s to the incentive variants.

    1. I felt DIE!DIE!DIE! #1 was an apology for overproducing Oblivion Song making that heavily ordered book worthless barring an announcement about production of the series into something.

They even messed the apology up by only basing it on initial orders for Oblivion song #1 and not all orders prior to delivery date. I doubled my order about a week before delivery after FOC trying to make sure I had enough Oblivion Song on hand if there was a run. A day or two later the overproduction was announced, customers start cancelling or cutting back and all of those books are still here now along with most of the initial order and most of the DDD1’s.

They further messed up the sorting on DIE!DIE!DIE! #1 so many stores only received 9 of the 10 covers the first week so while it was selling good in sets of 10, by the time we actually ordered more and got the missing cover in (which we’ve never had the chance to order separately) requiring a large purchase of #1’s just to hopefully get it two weeks later, no one cared and now we’ve got a long box stuffed with excess of both titles #1.

DDD’s not even in production right now so the hope to eventually break even over the long haul with later issue sales to the subscribers who started is getting killed. By the time it returns, if it does, the subscriber count should drop from lack of interest.

        1. It’s an acquired taste but it does have big screen or sy fy series potential. After reading #7 I believe it was, it makes you want to go back and read the first 6 all over again now that they’re framed in a different light. Takes another big twist 12 issues in. Many people who started both prefer one over the other for various reasons. I personally have no interest in DIE!DIEDIE! but that’s just me. I don’t crave more gore and cut off noses in my life. I don’t like the art style of either. I like clean sharp images that let me focus on the text instead of trying to interpret what I’m looking at. I’m sure I would easily find a film production more pleasing than the art and the story could develop onscreen smoother as well. I can see John Cryer cast in the lead now. He’s doing a great job on Supergirl now but I’m sure he could fit it into his schedule.

    2. I missed the boat on this one. Gonna have to see if Newbury comics has any decent copy’s left on the shelf

  6. picking up flash #70 batman who laughs #5 marvels &more mcyds happy meal end game toys.but fing really.why go to mcdonalds for a so called happy meal?who goes to mcyds for apple slices&yogert?w.t.f give me the fries and not just four of em and am i a g.-dam mouse?four chicken nugnets? all to get a thanos but still these happy meal toys are great flips . trying to recover from the worst case of bells paulecy ever.mouth hurts and is num i look like rocky dennis not my year love you guys blind adam out

      1. My kids prefer the go-gurt. Sometimes that’s all they eat. Does it go both ways where I can get double slices or yogurts?

Waiting for one of them to acquire the war machine toy so I can steal it from them! ?

          1. I try to avoid McDonalds the best I can but their cheapo single cheese burgers are a guilty pleasure for me. Comfort food I guess. I have no Idea why? I just love em! If I could get away with it I would eat ten at a time everyday…But I can’t, so I don’t. As it is I maybe get a couple every few weeks for a treat. McDonalds fries are awesome too. Why can’t steamed carrots taste as good?!?

  7. Before anyone goes in big on first Spider-Bite, note that this was a fantasy story told about a child in a cancer ward.

    1. I agree. People shouldn’t go big on it. I read it last night and didn’t post spoilers since it is a more personal story and not one that is really spec. Very touching though.

      1. I picked up a copy of FNSM#6 as a good ol’ fashion reader. Im going to sit down and read it now.

        1. Having young children of my own and living in a community that has lost several children due to cancer the past few years and seen them rally around them, this book sounds a bit more personable to me.

          1. It was a very sentimental read. My eyes welled up at the end. The final line, in the last panel, was rather inspiring, imo.

  8. CW Orders Batwoman, Katy Keene Series
The CW has announced that the DC Comics’-inspired Batwoman and the Riverdale spin-off Katy Keene will move forward as live-action scripted series.
“Batwoman, which stars Orange Is the New Black grad Ruby Rose as out lesbian and highly trained street fighter Kate Kane/Batwoman, becomes the first live-action scripted drama series with a lesbian superhero (played by an out actress) at the top of the call sheet. …

“The order for Batwoman arrives as The CW is plotting the “next generation” of DC shows as its flagship Arrow will end its run with an abbreviated 10-episode eighth and final season. Batwoman joins a roster of DC Comics-produced series on The CW’s 2019-2020 broadcast season including Arrow, Black Lightning, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, all of which scored early renewals at the Mark Pedowitz-led broadcast network.

“Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene stars Pretty Little Liars grad Lucy Hale and the flagship’s Ashleigh Murray. (As was reported when she was cast, Murray will depart Riverdale [in which she plays singer Josie McCoy] to focus on Katy Keene full time.) The series hails from Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa — who recently inked a big overall deal with Warners — and counts Berlanti and Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater among its executive producers.“

  11. Light week, great for catching up on reading..

Has anyone else read that FCBD HUMANOIDS H1 IGNITION comic? I’m glad I preordered #1 I’m super impressed. From storyline, art, writing, format, even paper quality.. I’ll be watching for their line what a start! If you see those laying around they’re free so read one, pretty cool stuff IMO..

Speaking of indies, NEON FUTURE has quickly (after 2 issues) become one of my favourite readers. It may be the year of the indie, we’ll see.. Either way, I’m enjoying some of these new start up companies in comic land. Plenty of room for a quality product.. Be well everyone.

  12. DCeased #2 can now be read if you get the advance PDF’s in the DC Direct e-mail mailed to you. If you don’t your local store may have a copy downloaded you can peak at. May even be a 1st Appearance in this one of a new Lantern. Nothing could top #1 in my opinion for story structure but this one does a nice job of fleshing out the story more, expanding the cast and still gets some shock and awe NO along the way!!!

    1. Was a good read. Yeah BJ thats a first appearance of a new Lantern, but it isnt in continuity though so im not sure it would hold up for speculation ( though i could be wrong)

Personally i would get the book just to read it. Im liking the story.

  13. I went to my first shop (not counting my main shop) in a long time today, and it was terrible. Everything was already marked up. Naomi #4 was $20 and the later printings were $15 or more. They had Year of the Villain at $2, that was . 25 right. It was just ridiculous, I’m not going to that store any more.

    1. $2 ?? im doing something wrong then cause i been giving them away free. If your looking for some i still have a few boxes full.

    2. It’s not a shop I go to very often. I just was in the area and had a few minutes to kill.

  14. Pickups today (cover price unless noted):

    Reads/PC:
    Batman 70B
    Batman Who Laughs 5B
    DCeased #1 (horror variant)
    Detective 1003B
Star Wars AoR: Boba Fett #1A
    FRN Spider-Man 6A

    For Spec:
    Ghost Tree #1
    Flash #1A & 1B (Rebirth) $5ea.
    Flash #7A

I also have Star Wars AoR Boba Fett Puzzle and Movie Incentive variants coming in from midtown. Love me a good Boba Fett cover!

  15. First week in a while that I didn’t get any new comics. Nothing stood out to me so I used the $20 or so I would have spent and out it towards a copy of Jimmy Olsen 134.

  16. Here we go again.
    FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #6 2ND PTG CABAL RATIO VAR (MAR198941, FOC 5/20/19)
    FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #6 2ND PTG VAR (MAR198942, FOC 5/20/19)

    1. NOTE: YOU MAY ORDER 1 VARIANT FOR EVERY 25 COPIES YOU PURCHASE OF FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #6 2ND PTG VARIANT.) – mlexi

Order placed. spectacular book to do this with. I was already planning something in that ballpark for the second printing order anyway. It’s a book I want a copy of on the shelf for the next 10 years even if it’s a reprint.

        1. Have you ever had a CHUCHALLENGE?

Try to get all the stores that frequent to kick a buck a copy to Make A Wish or one of the Cancer Charities?

Try to make a comic the heaviest ordered ever thing for a good cause?

I know it’ll never be ordered enough to be #1 and I’m sure most people here are only interested in what money the book can make for them but sometimes it’s nice to give a little back for a good cause.

I’m sure a few of the people who don’t have stores may want to mention the idea to their own local stores before FOC.

    1. Because people can’t afford his 1st golden age or silver age appearances. His first silver age app is actually Fantastic Four #6
      4. Sub mariner #1 is his 1st solo title and is a lot more affordable.

        1. My LCS has his 1st silver age appearance (FF 4) for $2500… forgot what grade it was because it didn’t make a difference to me at that price lol. Normally they have decent prices. I bought a FF 50 CGC 7.5 for $450 a few weeks ago. It’s going for about double that now.
