Poyo’s Trade and Hardcover Picks of the Week

We shouldn’t just collect or flip books, we should also read them. A good story can make your purchase well worth the money spent if you ask me. After all, we buy books to read for entertainment right? Even if you can’t flip them, reading is just as rewarding.

We tend to focus on mostly the floppy copies each week and kind of ignore the trades and hardcovers that come out week after week.

These can be one off books, collected editions or special editions.

This first one is a bit pricey but for any Batman fan, it’s a cool book to own. Especially since it’s cover has the famous Jock cover from Detective Comics #880 and reprints the issues from #871 to #881.

This pick is Absolute Batman the Black Mirror HC book from DC. TFAW seems to have one of the better deals from it’s $99.99 price tag at $79.99. So for those who don’t want to fork over the cash for an actual TEC880, this is the next best thing currently and you get the whole story arc included.

The next trade on my list of recommended reads and pick ups if you didn’t pick up the floppy copies is Middlewest TPB Book 01 from Skottie Young and Jorge Corona.

Middlewest TPB Book 01Great read, great art work. You can’t ask for anything better. Most know Skottie Young from his Baby Marvel variants but he’s proven to be a great writer if you ask me.

Book Solicitation: The lands between the coasts are vast, slow to change, and full of hidden magics. The town of Farmington has been destroyed, sending an unwitting adventurer and his vulpine companion in search of answers-and to quell a coming storm that speaks his name. From author SKOTTIE YOUNG (I HATE FAIRYLAND, Deadpool, Fortunately, the Milk) and artist JORGE CORONA (NO. 1 WITH A BULLET, Feathers, Big Trouble in Little China: Old Man Jack) comes the tale of Abel, a young boy who must navigate an old land in order to reconcile his family’s history. The perfect read for fans of dark fantasy like Return to Oz, classic Don Bluth animation, and/or Miyazaki animation. Collects MIDDLEWEST #1-6.

The last pick for this upcoming week is Black Badge HC Vol 01. Black Badge is another Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins masterpiece.

The story is great, the artwork is great. It’s just another collected edition to enjoy more story all in one sitting.

Black Badge HC Vol 01Book Solicitation: Meet the Black Badges, a top-secret branch of boy scouts tasked by the government to take on covert missions that no adult ever could. Among their organization, the Black Badges are the elite-the best of the best. The missions they’re tasked with are dangerous, and will only get worse as their leader’s attention is split between their objective and tracking down a lost team member. A member who disappeared years ago…presumed dead. Reuniting New York Times bestselling author Matt Kindt (Mind MGMT) and illustrator Tyler Jenkins (Peter Panzerfaust) following their multiple Eisner Award-nominated series Grass Kings, Black Badge is a haunting look at foreign policy, culture wars, and isolationism through the lens of kids who know they must fix the world that adults have broken.

Surprisingly, you can pre-order the next HC that hits shelves in September as well: Black Badge HC Vol 02

This is one of the few books I pick up issue #1 if I find them out in the wild. I have a feeling about this one and if it ever gets a media deal, could see some nice heat on the secondary market.

  1. I seem to remember Starlin at one point working on a Dreadstar TV show .. don’t know what ever happened to that, but it would make a great show or movie if done right ..

  2. Black Badge is a great book that has TV or movie option written all over it. Great art, great story and great covers, I highly recommend picking it up.
