Poyo’s Trade and Hardcover Picks of the Week

We shouldn’t just collect or flip books, we should also read them. A good story can make your purchase well worth the money spent if you ask me. After all, we buy books to read for entertainment right? Even if you can’t flip them, reading is just as rewarding.

We tend to focus on mostly the floppy copies each week and kind of ignore the trades and hardcovers that come out week after week.

These can be one off books, collected editions or special editions.

This first pick I’ve been waiting on the trade to read in it’s entirety after reading the first two issues. Great read so far, just hope the rest keeps me entertained. It’s Warren Ellis and Jason Howard so I’m gonna guess they won’t but you never know.

Cemetery Beach TPB

A professional pathfinder breaks out of a torture cell in pursuit of his worst extraction scenario ever: escaping on foot across a sprawling and secret off-world colony established a hundred years ago and filled with generations of lunatics. His only ally? A disaffected young murderess. From WARREN ELLIS and JASON HOWARD, the creators of the critically acclaimed TREES, which is currently being adapted for television. Collects CEMETERY BEACH #1-7.

It’s a small trade and hardcover week so this weeks is pretty minimal.

This next pick has a new hardcover coming out but you can still find the trade paper back for cheap. It’s a series I would love to check out as it was from around 2008 initially, a few years before I got back into comics.

City of Others TPB

Stosh Bludowski is a killer, born with the capacity for no apparent human emotion other than rage. Killing comes easy for Blud, and he makes a good living doing what’s easy-until the day he meets two jobs in an alley who just won’t die, and a grotesque mystery unfolds right in front of him. Soon, the remorseless killer is confronted by a reality he could never imagine, and he will be invited to make a decision once and for all . . . is he human, or is he Other? * After a long hiatus from making comics, Bernie Wrightson is back at the drawing table working side-by-side with acclaimed writer Steve Niles on the most exciting new horror comic of the year- City of Others . * “Bernie is one of my greatest heroes and influences in art. When it comes to horror, few creators have contributed more to the comics medium than Bernie has.” -Alex Ross

These last picks goes to you Toy Story fans or for you people who created smaller versions of yourself. We can’t forget about the kids right? Get them started young into graphic novels and comics so they turn into comic book nerds like ourselves.

toy story 4 HC

Art of Toy Story 4 HC

With a story that’s spanned more than 20 years, the adventures of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the gang have captured the hearts of millions. The Art of Toy Story 4 invites readers to explore the next installment of Pixar’s beloved franchise through never-before-seen concept art, character studies, process animation, storyboards, colorscripts, and more. Featuring exclusive interviews with the production team on the making of the film and insights into their creative vision, The Art of Toy Story 4 reveals the vivid imagination that brought this story to life.

I’m fascinated in how they do these animated films now. I took a 3D CAD class back in the mid 90s that I thought was top notch type of stuff. I was thrilled when I completed my 3D Locomotive Train that I had to create as my complete grade for an entire semester. The stuff they do now is just amazing.

  1. City of Others sounds really good. I’m into War comics and we have another coming out on 6/05, All Quiet on the Western Front GN by Wayne Vansant that I’ll be checking out. Also, I ran across an interesting article by Max Brooks at the Modern War Institute at West Point about reading comics to understand war. Quite an interesting reading list. It can be found at https://mwi.usma.edu/war-books-special-edition-max-brooks-reading-comics-understand-war-part-2/ . One of my favorites is The DoD, The M16A1. Rifle, Operation and Preventative Maintenance manual illustrated by Will Eisner. I’m old and was in the military when they were still issuing the M16A1.

    1. It’s funny, I’m against war myself but I love reading about war and past wars. I’m guess I’m a war history loving hippie I think.. 🙂

  2. First ever Minecraft graphic novel was this week. Possible sleeper for later.

Yes, I said sleeper. Some TPB and HC wind up very very expensive after they go OOP. Go check out the Silver Surfer Omnibus from 2007.

I pretty much stopped collecting single issues several years ago, because I don’t ever want to fight customers for books. And after owning a couple dozen Avengers 4s, it’s not like it brings me special pride to “own one”. So when cool stuff comes in, it goes right back out. But I do collect vintage trades and hardcovers. Started (like most folks) with the old Fireside stuff. But I snatch up most OOPs that walk in, whether it’s the original Deadpool Circle Chase with the $6.95 cover price, the original shiny Infinity Gauntlet trade, first printings of Watchmen, etc.

Given that most folks who will be buying Minecraft are young, there probably won’t be many copies in nice shape down the road. Chance it becomes flippable in the future. And in the meantime, hey, it’s Minecraft comics, right? 🙂

    1. I almost picked that one as well but I also figured it might be past it’s prime. But you’re right, could be a sleeper down the road.

I’m turning into a trade guy myself. It’s a reason I started the trade and hardcover picks of the week, I think more people should tune into them.

  3. I buy alot of trades and hardcovers but mostly for the PC, so I don’t have to read my comics. I just bought a Speedball tpb the other day.
