Things I Like and Don’t Like for the Week of July 3rd, 2019

It’s that time again, where I tell you what’s really grinding my gears for the week of July 3rd, 2019.

Some weeks it’s mostly likes, other weeks it’s dislikes.

So what’s grinding my gears this week?

Sea of Stars

I got an advanced review copy and it’s a great read. Jason Aaron rarely disappoints.

It’s a definite pickup I think. I don’t expect it to heat up though, it’s Jason Aaron so I expect most retailers ordered enough copies to go around.

Maybe I’ll try and get a advanced sneak peak preview up before Wednesday.

Sea of Stars #1

‘LOST IN THE WILDS OF HEAVEN,’ Part One: Being a space trucker sounds like a cool job, but in reality, it can be boring as hell. So when recently widowed Gil gets a long-haul gig across the universe, he figures it’s safe enough to bring his young son Kadyn along for the ride-that is, until their ‘big rig’ gets bitten in half by a gigantic Space Leviathan!

Now separated from his son-with a breached suit that’s venting oxygen at an alarming rate-Gil must defy the odds and stay alive long enough to rescue Kadyn. But meanwhile, Kadyn seems to be getting all the help he needs from a talking Space Monkey riding a Space Dolphin⦠or maybe it’s the strange powers he’s suddenly manifesting?! From the writing duo of JASON AARON (SOUTHERN BASTARDS, Thor) and DENNIS HALLUM (Cloak & Dagger, Vader: Dark Visions), with dazzling art by STEPHEN GREEN (Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.) and cosmic colors by RICO RENZI (Spider-Gwen), comes a brand-new science fiction series with all the……

Avengers Re-Release

Anyone read the extra footage you have to pay to see? It’s all the crud you’ll find on the DVD/Blu-Ray when released.

Seriously though, an entire re-release of unused footage that they couldn’t even finish the CGI just so they can take down Avatar as highest grossing movie of all time. Gimme a break Marvel.

The only winners out of this was the movie theaters who scored more popcorn and soda sales out of it.

The Last God

I saw the solicitations for the new DC Black Label The Last God with Phillip Kennedy Johnson writing but the artwork looks fantastic with Riccardo Federici.

Let’s just hope DC doesn’t pull a Batman Damned and censor their own Mature Content to ruin the potential this book has.

Here’s the solicitation for the upcoming book:

Thirty years ago, a fellowship of legendary adventurers saved their world by slaying the demonic tyrant Mol Uhltep — The Last God. Following his downfall, the realm entered a new age of peace and prosperity. But a generation later, when the leader of the original fellowship dies, their children and successors learn their terrible lie:

The Last God still lives.

A new generation of heroes must unearth the secrets that their parents kept, and set out to finish what was started thirty years before. And this time, they must not fail.

That’s all I got this week for likes and dislikes. What’s grinding your gears this week?

  1. The DC “B” cover price bump starts this week…that’s what’s grinding my gears. Looks like it impacts DCeased, Deathstroke, Harley & Justice League, but not Batgirl, Green Lantern or Lois Lane. Might have to break down and get DCeased B cvr featuring zombie WW.

      1. I thought they’d said originally it was for the YOTV tie in issues B covers but thru the June solicitations I don’t see any specific pattern just looking at the covers themselves. Some titles identified with YOTV get it while others don’t. Cardi-B’s are a little confusing it seems.

          1. “DC Upgrades Variant Covers on July “Year of the Villain” Tie-Ins
To help make DC Entertainment’s Year of the Villain even more special, the variant covers for “The Offer” tie-in issues listed below will be printed on 10-point card stock, similar to the covers of Heroes in Crisis.
“We wanted to do something special for Year of the Villain tie-in issues,” says DC Publisher Dan DiDio. “If we find that fans and retailers support the added collector’s value we may continue and expand the program.”
These covers will spotlight the greatest villains of the DC Universe. They will feature minimal trade dress to present the artwork in a fresh, bold setting.
These variant covers will carry an increased cover price of one dollar more than the Standard Edition.”

            1. “If we find that fans and retailers support the added collector’s value we may continue and expand the program.” fans don’t care for card board….i’d rather keep my dollars

  2. The Last God looks Epic. Instantly reminds of the jaw dropping painted brilliance of years gone by from the fabulous Frank Frazzetta & the Epic Illustrated line. Seems that for release in October with three regular covers. I suspect there will be some mighty variants to potentially look out for as well for this. A CGC signed Riccardo Federici edition might well be a keeper investment piece ? Thank you for sharing the news on this one Poyo 🙂

  3. Swordmaster #1 has a prevue available through the Diamond Daily today. Is that god thing spec worthy? God things have been getting other titles price increases lately. Other than that maybe a 1st sidekick aka Weasel from Deadpool type is the only thing I saw.

    1. Isn’t Diamond Daily only for Diamond account holders? I’d imagine less than 5% of our traffic here at CHU are Diamond Account holders.. you’re talking to very few and very limited when it comes to access to Diamond inside info that’s for account holders..

      1. Anthony gets it or can if we let him know to take a peak which I just did.

5% may be able to comment 1st hand, the other 95% may benefit from the comments depending on whether they lean toward purchasing or running away from it.

        1. I’m kind of wishing I’d bothered to check the Preview for Marvel Comics Presents #6 a month ago now. They stopped 7 pages in but the X-Men battle would have gotten my attention and Talisman getting her neck snapped would have had me order more copies. Rien doesn’t appear yet at that point but the lead up to it looks good.

        2. 4.9% of that 5% probably never speak up.. most retailers likely use sites like CHU to hike the prices of new books when they should wait a week or so… 😉

          1. I looks like Cyclops and Colossus also got killed in Marvel Comics Presents #6. I like X-Men action love fussing about them killing them off every story. A couple more copies would have been ordered just so I could talk/fuss about it and have a copy to read.

Every store should CHU their books thoroughly before swallowing.

            1. I actually do my FOC adjustments on Fridays. If I was disciplined, there should be like one day a week set aside to check everything Marvel/DC on FOC for free previews.

Of course that’d cut into time that’s supposed to be getting used to read back issues. I’m only at Iron Man 1998 series right now, #16-17 range. I’m getting distracted wondering if those issues in the beginning of the series have any spec potential if Carol Danvers starts dealing with her alcoholism in the movies like she did during this time in the comics.

Now let me go see how Iron Man’s going to deal with all those rats that turned into lizards that turned into Fin Fang Foom and how the boy under all of that gets money to pay his sisters hospital bills now that Iron Mans stopped the lizard version from knocking over ATM’s..

          2. Haha, yeah that’s my experience. Good luck to that stack of Artgerm Black Cats that no one will be buying at 9.99 day of release.

        3. I just scroll through when BJ starts talking Diamond accounts as it flies over my head?.

          no harm done here!

Although it might be worth considering starting a thread on the forums for detailed postings that only benefit diamond account owners. Just a thought.

          1. “Although it might be worth considering starting a thread on the forums for detailed postings that only benefit diamond account owners. Just a thought.”

If Anthony and anyone else see’s something I didn’t then it benefits you by letting you know to stock up presale. If not maybe you pass on it and save some $$$.

          2. “Although it might be worth considering starting a thread on the forums for detailed postings that only benefit diamond account owners. Just a thought.”

            Pffttt…

            1. Diamond Account holders just pre-order what their customers want and they sell new comics at retail prices.. what else is there to talk about? 😛

              1. “what else is there to talk about?”

There is good news. SPOILER ALERT*** Seattle survived Fin Fang Foom in IM17. Not so sure how well they’ll do if Carol Danvers doesn’t sober up soon. IM 18 has me trying to figure out how many reoccurring bad guys are out there for Carol. With Golden something and Sapper in this issue and in Ms Marvel 13 back when she had the cheerleader outfit and skirt, makes me think they might have a shot at movie time in an CM sequel.

“IDW Publishing’s Dungeons & Dragons: A Darkened Wish #2 has a Cover B (MAR198832E,$3.99; FOC 07/01/19) available to order that was inadvertently left out of the July PREVIEWS. ”

Apparently FOC has a book that may have gotten underordered due to it not being in the Previews book. I think I caught it Friday but I need to double check it got ordered also.

                1. I gave in and went ahead and read all the advance previews for stuff on FOC this week that was available and found a neat way to know exactly which ones had something I’ll avoid elaborating on. Increased my orders for Epilogue right after.

  4. What’s grinding my gears is Kevin Feige says everyone snapped back into existence was brought back safely because it was Smart Hulk. Just watched Spidey and that’s not really the case as the returning snapped people are returned to the place they were snapped from creating mayhem.

    1. I thought in endgame they snapped them back but everything since the snap stays the same. So they vanished but reappear 5 years later. So everyone who didn’t vanish kept such memories.

      1. That needs clearing up. If I was piloting a plane and disappeared, did I just get snapped back in time to crash or 5 years later after the crash? I would think with Spider-Man if they’d popped back 5 years later half his school would already be off at college or graduating.

        1. You would pop back where the plane was in the sky (cause it already crashed with everyone that didn’t get snapped out of existence) and then fall and plummet to your death.

          1. Hmmmm, still debating on going to the theater or waiting for the Blue Ray. Reminds me of that No More Mutants stuff where everyone flying or underwater that got depowered died.

          2. Key in Alanis Morisette….

            Returned form the snap,
just to fall to your death
isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?

    1. Its only a big deal to those who are still reading it, id imagine. The series has not been spec worthy for a few years now.
It is nice to see the series end when Rick was no longer in it. I have felt thats the way it should be.
