Things I Like and Don’t Like for the Week of September 4th, 2019

It’s that time again, where I tell you what’s really grinding my gears for the week of September 4th, 2019.

Some weeks it’s mostly likes, other weeks it’s dislikes.

So what’s grinding my gears this week?

One Month Until NYCC

This will be my 4th NYCC in a row and this year is going to be a little more exciting I think.

We are hoping to throw a CHU get together for those attending. No details yet on when and where, but we’ll have those details probably closer to the convention.

Dark Horse Severs Ties with Brian Wood

You know, I wasn’t going to bring this up but I think it’s important.

Brian Wood is a talented writer. He’s had some great reads and books across many publishers. His most recent works have been heavy with Dark Horse with several titles, the most recent have been the Aliens series which have been pretty great reads.

I think for far too long some tend to look the other way though with his past, I know I did when picking up his books to read. He’s had several clouds hanging over his name about sexual misconduct and using his position to threaten upcoming careers of other promising creators in the business.

There is now yet another misconduct allegation against him and this time I think enough is enough.

Dark Horse has canceled his new Aliens series that was about to hit shop shelves and they’ve also stated they’re dropping all ties with him on future projects.

I applaud Dark Horse for their decision and I hope other publishers take a good look at Brian Wood’s past and current allegations before considering him for any work and future work. I think the industry needs to squash this type of behavior from it’s creators.

I will never buy or recommend a Brian Wood title or work until this guy gets help as I feel he truly has issues and needs to be held accountable for his actions.

You can read more about this allegation here.

House of X

Holy moly…  when was the last time a Marvel title was selling out so quickly, with new printings and the issues heating up on the secondary market based on just the story alone? There’s been no real first appearances yet these books are turning into flipper books for House of X by Hickman.

I think I said it before but it’s probably just safe to pre-order these ahead of time since Midtown and some other shops are limiting these to 1 per customer.

I must admit, I’ve behind on my reading and looking forward to the hardcover that’s going to include both House and Powers all into one big read. I was going to wait for these on Marvel Unlimited but I’ll probably have to swing a bit early for the hardcover hitting shelves this December. This was a series I knew I wanted to read all in one sitting.

Plus, 12 x $5 books for $40 in one hardcover..  it’s a nice way to save money (unless of course you’re picking up the floppies to flip, which isn’t a bad idea at this point in time).

  1. Your right about the powers and house of x titles stores are cleaned out by Friday and your lucky to find any variants

    1. I got lazy and havent listed any of my house of or power of comics. Nor my absolute carnage stuff. Have them spred out in like 14 different short boxes. I realy need to orginize myself

  2. FOC/OIC Date 10/21/2019 for the House of X HC. That gives you plenty of time to see the reviews from the last 6 issues before commiting. It’s looking like a solid cheap pickup at this point but by the time it ships but they still have a chance of tanking the story into something stupid, unwanted or controversial by the end like Heroes in crisis blowing it with the last two issues recently. If that happens you may also find people dumping unsold 1st Printings and any later printings or including them in the Christmas/Halloween Comicfest/Black Friday sales ahead of the ship date for the HC.
I have yet to sell out of any of the standard covers yet myself although HOX2 is getting low.

  3. I meet Brian Wood 2 times and loved reading his books. I never knew he was this type of person. I’m shocked, as he seemed like a real genuine person. He is now banned from my pull list!!!

Also I want to call out the comic shop known as Comics-n-stuff in the San Diego County. They are a big chain comic book store with about 6 or so locations. I am done doing business with them. Every Wednesday, they play the secondary market on all books that heat up the day before and are marked up to eBay prices. Not couple of dollars increase but the whole asking price. I have even showed them the sold listings, but they won’t budge. From this point on, I rather miss out on a book then to deal with a company like that.

Also you know what their excused was when I called them out, they said that they’ve been doing this for 5 years. So I told them, what about the books that don’t heat up and they are priced under cove on eBay, will you sell them to me for that price? They stayed quiet and said that’s not how they do business. I’ve been doing business with them for about 4 years so I know they haven’t been doing this for that long. Oh well hopefully people hear read this and stop doing business with them.

  4. Is there something like marvels unlimited for retailers? I remember wanting to read powers #1 and look at the preview again for house #1 (it was no longer there after the release, Im pretty sure it was just a partial preview and not the whole comic and I wanted to check but it was gone!). Don’t think we had any left over of either for me to read. Most of our subscribers initially said they were definitely not interested. “They are rebooting x-men again? ugh”
