Poyo’s Spec and Drek for September 18th, 2019

Welcome once again to my spec and my drek. I pick what I think will be winners, not only if you make money by flipping but winners as in either a great read or just awesome art.

Then there’s the pesky drek, the comic you should avoid altogether or not fall into the buying every variant trap.

DC Picks

This pick has got my interest. I’m also digging the variant B cover by Lemire.

Inferior Five #1 (of 12)

The citizens of Dangerfield, Arizona, are beset by strange goings-on after the ‘Invasion’ that rocked the DC Universe, but only five misfit kids seem to notice them.

Inferior Five #1 (of 12) (Lemire Variant)Can they uncover what’s happening before some sinister force collects them all? Find out in this new miniseries!

And in the backup feature with story and art by Jeff Lemire, the Peacemaker is on a top-secret mission from Checkmate and Amanda Waller to find a mysterious weapon before the Russians can.

Could be a great read, could be a total letdown. It’s still a book I’m going to check out. After the last Batman issue with what was reported as more pages of Catwoman and Batman smooching most of the time, I can’t wait for King’s take on Batman to be over.

Marvel Picks

House of X #5 (of 6)

Xavier’s dream turns deadly for some of his students as they fight back against the humans’ plan to eliminate them.

Superstar writer Jonathan Hickman (FANTASTIC FOUR, AVENGERS, SECRET WARS) continues his reshaping of the X-Universe alongside Young Gun artist Pepe Larraz (EXTERMINATION, AVENGERS). The Future of the X-Men begins here! Rated T+

The hot X-Men title continues. After this, one more issue to go before the relaunch of the other regular ongoing titles soon to hit store shelves.

Spider-Man #1 (of 5)

WHO IS CADAVEROUS?!

The most shocking and incredible comic of 2019 is here as J.J. ABRAMS (STAR WARS, STAR TREK, SUPER 8) and his son HENRY ABRAMS are joined by superstar artist SARA PICHELLI (MILES MORALES, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) team up for SPIDER-MAN!

What do they have planned for Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson?! Who is Cadaverous?! The Modern Master of Mystery Makes His Marvel this September! Rated T

I think this book will be a great read, hopefully. It is JJ Abrams at the writing helm who has done a pretty good job at directing and producing movies. I will go for the Kidd variant over the regular. Sorry, that regular cover with Spider-Man and Mary Jane on the front is just a bit cheesy for me. I usually like Coipel’s work but that’s not his best work if you ask me.

Indie and Small Publisher Picks

Might be a winner. I think I read somewhere that allocations may occur for this hot new series, which has been impossible to find the additional printings for issue #1.

Once & Future #2 (of 6)

The McGuire family has held back supernatural threats for generations, but this time they messed up.

As an ancient evil arises from the grave, Bridgette and Duncan find themselves up against forces bigger than they could have expected, and faces new and old are about to complicate things further.

You Are Obsolete #1 (Cover A – Clarke)

A disgraced journalist is called to cover a mysterious story on an isolated European island. As she investigates, she discovers the children have taken control and are somehow killing off all adults by their 40th birthdays.

Now, she must discover the truth behind the killings while staying on the good side of the children’s harsh leader…or she’s next. YOU ARE OBSOLETE is an spine-tingling thriller that evokes the eerie naturalism of 1970s hor-ror films with a modern deadly digital twist.

Written by Mathew Klickstein (Sony Pic-tures’ Against the Dark, Slimed!, Springfield Confidential, Selling Nostalgia) and drawn Evgeniy Bornakov (DESCENDENT).

Could be a great read, could be a total dud. I’m hoping for the better of the two.

This next book sold out most covers pretty quickly by Friday of last week at Midtown. The only covers that didn’t sell out by Friday were the blank and ratio variant that were about double cover price.

Sister Powers #1 Cover A

The coming-of-age tale of two superpowered sisters is the focus of Keenspot’s newest all-ages series, first previewed in July’s $1.99 Keenspot Spotlight 2019.

Faith and Charity have inherited special abilities from their mother, and their lives are turned upside down by the consequences.

Plus, their high school principal is totally turned into a rhinoceros, and as anyone who has ever watched an episode of Beast Wars knows, rhinos are completely awesome.

Keenspot has had a handful of hits in the past, so don’t let this one slip past you, it could be a sleeper hit of the week as these tend to have smaller print runs.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

This isn’t your normal drek pick. But seriously, Midtown is listing CGC graded signed books.

Okay, it makes sense to list the 9.8 and 9.6 books but they’re trying to list a 9.0 Ghost Rider #1 signed by Gabrielle Luna for $100. That’s about $80 more than I’d spend on that book. The 9.8 they’re trying to offload at $200.00. Even that’s a bit too much. Maybe it’s worth $60.

This is the Vol 7 series which isn’t even Robbie Reye’s first appearance, which was back in All-New Ghost Rider #1.

  1. I hear you with Midtown and cgc copies. wasn’t expecting that…and waaaaaay overpriced.

    Good luck to them, though.

Kind of excited for absolute carnage 3…wondering what this “classified” JTC cover is…Maybe it’s Dylan in Symbiote Mode! but the spoiler I saw makes a reference back to venom 19…so he story is still out of order release wise so it could be anything…

    1. Exactly.. Good luck selling those overpriced CGC books.. Sad part is, you have to realize these were probably all the leftover books they couldn’t sell as they bought too many at the time. They shipped off to get graded after obtaining a signature on them in hopes people budge in buying them.. meh!

  2. trust me bro.midtown spits on what we think.most of the over priced stuff is for people visting times square these people are the same clueless ones that pay $20 for the racist elmo to take a picture with them and stand inf ront of the building to take pictures wile I am trying to get to work or set up when I am street vending for the day .times square is nothing but a big trap #testify blind adam out
