Poyo’s Trade and Hardcover Picks of the Week

We shouldn’t just collect or flip books, we should also read them. A good story can make your purchase well worth the money spent if you ask me. After all, we buy books to read for entertainment right? Even if you can’t flip them, reading is just as rewarding.

We tend to focus on mostly the floppy copies each week and kind of ignore the trades and hardcovers that come out week after week.

These can be one off books, collected editions or special editions. I go into these picks of mostly just the solicitations provided from the publishers. These are the ones that caught my attention for this upcoming week.

Missed out on the hot Immortal Hulk series? Want to read it but don’t want to pay the high secondary market prices for the story arcs in the first ten issues? Can’t be bothered paying for Marvel Unlimited to read cause you don’t like reading your comics on digital formats?

Well, this is the next best thing I think. With a hardcover that can display nicely up on the bookshelf.

Immortal Hulk HC Vol 01

Is he man or monster…or is he both? You know Bruce Banner. He’s quiet, calm, never complains. He’s a scientist who believes he can use the darkest elements of his personality to do good in the world. If someone were to shoot him in the head…all he’d do is die. But the horror lives deeper. And the horror refuses to die.

When night falls, something other than the man gets up again. The horror is the Immortal Hulk! And though he cannot die, the Hulk is being hunted yet again. By the government, by Alpha Flight, by the mysterious Shadow Base – and by the Avengers!

But Bruce has even bigger problems. Something terrible has infected him. Something with unspeakable plans for humanity. And the only one who knows about this dark infection…is the Immortal Hulk! Collecting IMMORTAL HULK #1-10 and material from AVENGERS (2018) #684. Rated T+

Just in time for Halloween, one of the best holidays of the year. Call me old school but I really dig the older comics in TPB or Hardcover formats for easy reading.

Ghosts Classic Monsters of Pre-Code Horror Comics TPB

From the terror team that curdled your blood with Haunted Horror, Zombies, Return of the Zombies, Haunted Love, Swamp Monsters, and Mummies, Ghosts is the latest and ghastly greatest in the Classic Monsters of Pre-Code Horror comics collections.

Over 128 pages of appalling apparitions, formidable phantoms, shuddery seances, shivery spooks ‘n specters, and evil wraiths with much more than just revenge on their murdered minds!

Advance solicited for October.

You can never have too many Batman trades or hardcovers on your book shelf. This is a must have for any fan.

Absolute Batman Arkham Asylum HC 30th Anniv Ed

One of the greatest Batman stories ever told, BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM is celebrated in this new 30th anniversary slipcased edition featuring new cover art by Dave McKean!

The inmates of Arkham Asylum have taken over and are demanding Batman in exchange for their hostages.

Accepting their demented challenge, Batman is forced to endure the personal hells of The Joker, the Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Two-Face and many other sworn enemies in order to save the innocents and retake the prison. MATURE READERS

I love original graphic novels, particularly the true indie ones that are unique.

This last pick looks like an entertaining read and it’s on my check out list. Who doesn’t need a good laugh from kooky jokes.

Fake Lake Graphic Novel

The town of Fake Lake is a sludge pit of goings on and the Fake Lake Bottom Feeder (the local paper) has been kept busy chronicling what amounts to a mild apocalypse: collapsing bridges, a gap in the street that swallows the high school band, an awful bacterial business at the hot springs and a great blowout at the Fakeola bottling plant.

Fake Lake is a replica of a weekly edition of the paper, complete with Children’s Section (try not to freak out Trippy the clown), Industrial News (it’s work injury week, again), a fulsome Food Section (beware the Flakey Bakery’s Sticky Buns) and a special double page spread of the Dregs Coffee Shop’s Sponsored Expedition to Ascend Old Frothy (their espresso machine) with exclusive photos of bearded hipster explorer types hip deep in milk foam.

  1. I just love these write ups! Floppies are cool but when your every day person comes over to my house and see the library they are more in awe of the GN library I am creating then the slabs on the wall.
