October Previews 2019 – Indies Spotlight Books

Previews gives us a glimpse of what’s to come. Being a huge indie reader, I always look at the independent books first. Here’s the spotlight of new books coming out of October Previews to kick off the middle of October.

There’s some decent books coming down the pipeline but honestly, nothing really stands out as spec hits. Mostly reader books when it comes to the Indies and Smaller publisher books.

Regardless, here are some of the spotlight books for Octobers Previews for indies and small publishers.

A good war story with great art are always on my to check out list.

Air War Stories #1

Each issue of Air War Stories focuses on aerial war battles, illustrated brilliantly by comic book legend, WWII vet, and Eisner Award nominee Sam Glanzman!

This issue features: ‘The Day I Died’ set during WWII, ‘The Deadliest Game’ set during WWI, ‘Victor 4 Why Don’t You Answer?’ set during the Korean War, and ‘Buzz Bomb Patrol’ set during WWII. Also included are essays about Sam Glanzman, original covers, vintage advertisements, and more!

Don’t miss what some have called a ‘Sam Glanzman tour de force’!

I love the classic pulp art comics. Mix in some horror and you got a great read.

Classic Pulp Horror One Shot

Buy from Pymccomics

Collected here are three vintage tales of horror and the macabre curated by Joshua Werner.

Digitally remastered to their original terrifying colors and quality.

This is a must-have for fans of horror and classic pulp comics!

It’s a one shot but the solicitation has got my attention.

Eskimo Kisses One Shot

Buy from Pymccomics

Originally, the word Eskimo came from an Agonquin term for ‘eater of flesh,’ but that definition has been lost to the ages, until now.

Present day, an isolated town in Northern Canada discovers the true origins when a stranger arrives and they are overrun by cannibalistic creatures.

Along with the help of some locals, the town’s police officer and his pregnant wife must do anything they can to get out alive.

The first issue was a great read. I’m really looking forward to this next issue in the series. It claims it’s a 5 issue mini-series but it seems BOOM! always upgrades these to ongoing titles after they see how well they’ll do.

Folklords #2 (of 5) (Cover A – Smith)

Buy from Pymccomics

Against the order of his village, Ansel strikes out to find the Folklords, the only beings that can explain his visions of another world.

But the forest is even more dark and terrible than he was told, and Ansel meets two very different women who will change his life-one way or another-forever.

Could be a great read. I’m intrigued by the solicitation but it’s gotta be extra special if it’s going to be another apocalyptic story.

Gung Ho #1 (Cover A – Parel)

Buy from Pymccomics

Ablaze proudly presents, Gung-Ho, a ‘spiritual successor’ to The Walking Dead! In the near future, the ‘White Plague’ has almost completely decimated humanity, and civilization is only a sweet memory.

Europe as a whole has become a danger zone, where survival is only possible within towns or fortified villages. Enter orphaned brothers Zach and Archer Goodwoody, troublemaking teens who have just arrived at Fort Apache, and about to learn the hard rules of integration into the colony. Outside the walls lies a hostile and deadly environment, but inside is also a dangerous place, as the boys are about to find out.

Benjamin von Eckartsberg and Thomas von Kummant deliver a creative and visual tour de force with jaw-dropping artwork that will transport you to a brand new post-apocalyptic world where the tension is palpable, and the wrong move will get you killed… or worse.

This has been optioned so this next one shot in the series is a must check out.

Gutt Ghost Seek Out Sensation One Shot

Buy from Pymccomics

As seen in Heavy Metal magazine, a special one-shot of everyone’s favorite intestinal ghost.

While visiting the city, Gutt Ghost runs into an old friend named Sensation BOOM. Sitting on a stoop and going through a box of comics, Sensation shows off some rare issues including ones featuring Gutt Ghost himself! Consumed by tales from his past in print, Gutt fails to realize a literal growing danger behind him in the form of a Yellow Button Red.

What exactly is a Yellow Button Red? We’ll tell you this much, they ain’t pretty and they will eat just about anything for a laugh. Thankfully, Sensation is no stranger to the likes of the Yellow Button Red gang. Time to see Sensation BOOM!

I loved Klaus from Morrison and Mora so this is a must.

Klaus Life & Times of Joe Christmas #1

Buy from Pymccomics

In the tradition of Grant Morrison’s 2001 New X-Men Annual , BOOM! Studios presents a widescreen comic that catalogs the life and times of one Joe Christmas.

Abandoned as a baby, Joe Christmas is taken in by Klaus. In this holiday calendar-inspired comic, experience 25 all new short stories of Klaus teaming up with Joe Christmas over the years!

Grant Morrison (New X-Men) and Dan Mora (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) return to the winter world of Klaus for an all new holiday special!

I’m on the fence about this one. It’s a book to check out but just like I said, I’m checking this one out first hand before committing to buy. Maybe if I get an advance preview I’ll decide then to buy.

Red Mother #1 (Cover A – Haun)

Buy from Pymccomics

Jeremy Haun returns to his The Beauty roots as he teams with Danny Luckert, hot off Regression, for a new psychological horror series.

After losing her eye and the man she loves in a brutal mugging, Daisy McDonough is left trying to put the pieces of her life back together. Just when she begins to think she can heal- move on, she begins to see strange things through her new prosthetic eye.

And The Red Mother sees her in return.

Continuing BOOM! Studios’ string of successes, The Red Mother follows Faithless, Once & Future, and Something is Killing the Children for a new original series that examines the dangers that hide in plain sight – and the consequences of digging beneath the surface to find the truth underneath.

I selected this one just because it had murder in the solicitation.

Scary Christmas #1 (Cover A – Wolfer)

Buy from Pymccomics

The most wonderful time of the year will resound with shrieks of fright, and those shrieks will be YOURS!

The pages of Scary Christmas are chock-full of fear, as we explore traditional, international yuletide tales of murder, mayhem, and monsters! From the Alpines comes Frau Perchta, with a penchant for disembowelment. From France, meet Hans Trapp, the cannibal disguised as a scarecrow. And from Iceland, welcome Jólakötturinn, the ‘yule cat’ that will devour you whole.

Fans of classic EC Comics horror will love Scary Christmas, which delivers three dark tales of terror with twist endings, illustrated by three different, international artists, and all designed to give your chills the chills.

But be warned: These tales are NOT for children, and contain graphic violence, gore, and nudity, and are for mature readers only! Scary Christmas #1 is available with two covers – Main and Sexy Stockings by Mike Wolfer.

I heard this is a great read. I believe I have a advance preview of this so I need to dig it out and read it. But I think Valiant is underrated and need more attention. They put out quality stuff.

Visitor #1 (of 4) (Cover A – Pinna)

Buy from Pymccomics

Unstoppable. Untraceable. Unkillable. This is how he changes the world…

Who is the Visitor?

Why are the leaders of the world terrified of him?

And will they live long enough to find out?

I picked up the NYCC exclusive for issue #1 and this one’s got my attention as well. Wanna see where this is going.

Wretches #2

Buy from Pymccomics

With her brother, Sean, kidnapped by one of the bots, Shea must venture into the underbelly of a crime-ridden planet to find a lead to his whereabouts.

Little does she know that a chance encounter with a bot named Burr may leave her dead before her rescue mission even begins. At one point, Burr was the last hope of the bots, setting out in search of a way to slow down their deterioration. Beaten and left for dead, he finally stumbles across something that will help the bots. Will his crooked allies kill him and use this discovery to gain power over the bots? Or will coming face-to-face with Shea, a human with a taste for killing bots, leave him dead in the gutter?

That’s it for the indie and smaller publisher books. Stick around, I’m hoping to have Marvel, DC and the slightly bigger publishers like Dark Horse and Image coming soon.

Tell us what you’re looking forward to out of October Previews.

  1. I used to be big into the independents as well. Especially #1-3’s. First thing I also looked at when doing my preview orders through midtown. Now I’m obsessed with post 2000 Newsstands. The Eskimo Kisses sounds good I may have to order a copy.

    1. I’m really big into indie books but it just seems as of lately they haven’t been as exciting. I’ve found more original graphic novels to be more exciting than the floppies coming out. This round of previews seems really lackluster in the indie department..

  2. I’ve watched a Mexican movie that has the same concept as Red Mother. I just can’t remember the name of the movie. It has the same concept in a way. A man seeing the life of the person who he has the eye from and he starts going crazy cuz he doesn’t know which life is his. It’s a cool movie.
