September 2019 Review – Part I

With these reviews, we find out how right or how wrong we were, what we missed and what you can likely still find at cover price, likely at the local comic shop or at online retailers.

I missed the August Monthly Review so I’m hoping to get back into the groove in getting these out.

Image takes the top spot for the Month of September with it’s Spawn #300 while Marvel dominated most of the remaining top ten books with Hickman’s X-Men reboot series House of X and Powers of X titles.

  1. Spawn #300 – 262,599 (Somehow its on a 3rd printing when first prints are still available at most retailers)
  2. Spider-Man #1 – 156,369
  3. House of X #5 – 139,306
  4. Powers of X #5 – 137,550
  5. Powers of X #4 – 127,076
  6. House of X #4 – 119,366
  7. Doomsday Clock #11 – 115,817
  8. Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy #1 – 110,326
  9. Absolute Carnage #3 – 95,543
  10. DCeased: A Good Day to Die #1 – 90,017

Now let’s go over some of the highlight books from September.

September 4th, 2019 Books

Absolute Carnage Scream #2 Shalvey variant quickly sold out at most online retailers. Being a ratio variant, most shops started this one out around the $20 to $25 range.

A few early secondary sales over the $30 range, peaking out around $35 could have been from some FOMO. Most recent sales are anywhere from $12 to $20.

If you want this one for the personal collection or to gamble, buy on the secondary, you might be able to snag at a lower price.

Midnight Vista #1 1:10 Variant saw early sales around the $20 range but things have cooled off since.

With sales now under the $10 mark and even most BIN at $10 or less, this is now a double cover book.

There was some discussions about this being a swipe but I don’t think we can conclude such things. First of all, lots of aliens are depicted as big heads and big eyes, maybe the “shh” pose of the finger is in no way stealing others work when the complete artwork is in of it’s own.

Once & Future #1 3rd Printing has had sales all over the place.

From $2 to $12 and even a few recents flirting around the $20 range. This was one of those ghost books that it seemed no shops got a hold of. BOOM!’s excuse was to cut ordering off early and allocate cause they wanted to get the book to shops faster. I’m not buying it.

Something Is Killing Children #1 Frison Variant was the start of the BOOM! FOC variants that seemed to have kicked FOMO into higher gear.

Despite discussions and articles giving speculators a heads up on these books, these saw sales upwards of $15 to $20 on the secondary.

Things have settled since but we are still seeing sales hovering around the $10 range. If you can still find them for cover, not a bad flip for double money. I think these could turn into another gamble round as I think BOOM! has been pushing for media deals and options.

Web of Black Widow #1 had a 1:100 Hidden Gem variant that saw some initial FOMO prices around the $140 range.

A lot of sales around the $80 to $90 range but the most recent sold listing that was an auction ended at $51, which gives us a more realistic idea of value based on actual demand.

September 11th, 2019 Books

Once & Future #1 4th Printing is the same boat as the 3rd printing the week prior.

Most sales in the $10 to $12 range but there was even a few around the $1 to $2.25 range with actual auctions.

Absolute Carnage Vs Deadpool #2 Bagley Codex Variant was a 1:25 variant that quickly became unavailable. Only one listing currently on eBay at $45 + $6 shipping.

The average sold listings are all over the place but I’d put the median price average around the $20 to $25 range for this book but two of the latest listings were auctions putting both of the most recent ended auctions at the $36 and $38 price point.

Maybe due to limited supplies and those collecting these Codex Variants, could see these start going up in value once listed. This is one if you find for cheap, flip while you can.

Something Is Killing Children #1 2nd Printing isn’t a bad pickup if you can find it. Still selling around the $10 range on average. It’s a double your money book.

Stick around for Part II which I’ll try to get out later this week that will cover the last two Wednesdays of September.

  1. DC took it on the chin that month. Top book is ranked #7…and really the only reason HQ & PI is so high on he list is because Of all the store variants…I count 20 different covers just from them…

    1. Yeah.. Batman use to be a 90k+ a month book and even it’s starting to dip in the lower 80k range. I don’t see it getting any better though with Tynion taking over. Not sure why DC gives that guy so many titles to write..

      1. I’m with you man. I feel that if the sales for King are not that high, no way Tynion is going to somehow turn things around

    1. Heh… Just about all the regular covers you can still find online or at the local shops for cover price. I try to highlight books with a bit of demand, not books one can still buy directly from retailers.
