Poyo’s Spec and Drek for November 27th, 2019

Welcome once again to my spec and my drek. I pick what I think will be winners, not only if you make money by flipping but winners as in either a great read or just awesome art.

Then there’s the pesky drek, the comic you should avoid altogether or not fall into the buying every variant trap.

DC Picks

We likely won’t get a reveal this issue but we might get more clues.

Batman Beyond #38

Batman Beyond #38 (Manapul Variant)After all these years, Derek Powers, long thought dead, returns! The lethal villain who now goes by the name Blight is back to terrorize Neo-Gotham while he hunts down Bruce Wayne!

With Terry McGinnis wanted by the police and on the run, the only person who can stop him is Batwoman!

But how do you stop a walking nuclear reactor when you barely know how to use your own high-tech suit?

If you’re not reading Batman Beyond, this is the issue you pick up to match your #37 issues and then make sure to pick up Issue #39 and then potentially Issue #40 to sell’em as a set.

Don’t forget that Midtown has signed copies of Last God available.

Marvel Picks

The solicitations imply something huge happens in this issue that we don’t want to miss but since the reading order of this one is before Absolute Carnage #5 from last week, I’m not going to anticipate too much, not yet. I think at most we learn more details since the Previews Prevue kind of rehashes parts of what we already learned in AC5.

It’s still a must pickup to continue following the story line.

Venom #20

It’s the final tie-in to ABSOLUTE CARNAGE, but that doesn’t mean superstars Donny Cates and Iban Coello are easing up off the gas!

You want to know what happens in this one, True Believers? You’re going to have to read it! Rated T+

The other honorable mention goes to Avengers #27, there might be something special going on in this issue but it’s certainly full on speculation until we can see some spoilers.

Indie and Small Publisher Books

A must pickup for the Crow fans out there. Probably more of a reader book and series than it’s gonna make you money by flipping.

Crow Hark the Herald #1

Every year, a group of six people gather for Christmas in a cabin in the far North Woods of Wisconsin. But this isn’t your average bickering nuclear family-these are six of the most prolific killers in North America.

Now, last year’s sins have risen from the grave, ready to deliver the gift of revenge. Guided by the Crow, Cecilia Rite will give six psychos a holiday hammer party.

This next book is promising as it was a great first read. It’s only gonna be spec worthy if it gets optioned down the beaten path though. Pick it up for the read.

Killadelphia #1

SERIES PREMIERE! ‘SINS OF THE FATHER,’ Part One-Featuring the show-stopping talents of SPAWN series artist JASON SHAWN ALEXANDER and the writer behind such hit shows as Wutang: An American Saga, Marvel’s Runaways, and Starz’s American Gods-RODNEY BARNES.

When a small-town beat cop comes home to bury his murdered father-the revered Philadelphia detective James Sangster Sr.-he begins to unravel a mystery that leads him down a path of horrors that will shake his beliefs to their core. The city that was once the symbol of liberty and freedom has fallen prey to corruption, poverty, unemployment, brutality… and vampires. Welcome to KILLADELPHIA.

New Source Point book gives the impression it has potential. Could end up being a decent flip if demand kicks in, with the writer having ties to television already, could be one of those books with a potential for a future media option.

Misplaced #1

From the mind of television graphic designer Chris Callahan comes the first of a 4-issue supernatural mystery miniseries that will leave you questioning the very existence of existence.

What if paradise wasn’t as it seemed? A tragic journey to the new world… Two souls separated by death… After a fatal shipwreck, James finds himself dissatisfied with the tedious machinations of eternity in the afterlife.

A journey to discover the truth of his wife’s disappearance reveals a terrible secret even Knowledge can’t explain. The Misplaced is a dark supernatural tale of love and desperation that spans several planes of existence.

The last pick goes to a supernatural horror thriller type of book that has potential.

Touching Evil #1 (of 7)

An attorney is given a curse from a mysterious prisoner that allows her to kill anyone instantly with just a touch of her hand… but only if they’re evil.

Her whole life is turned upside down in an instant as she is forced to question what evil is, who she can trust, and her own sanity.

Get ready to meet a hero unlike anyone you’ve ever seen, and forgive her if she doesn’t shake hands.

Midtown also has Undiscovered Country double signed books available as well.

Now on with the dreaded “avoid” pick, every writer and artist worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

Don’t overspend on the 1:25 Killadelphia #1 variant. It’s gonna be a great pickup if you can get at cover price but as someone already spent $63 for the copies at Midtown, I’m willing to bet you’ll get these for far less on the secondary market. In fact, there’s already a couple handfuls listed on eBay, I’m going to imagine there will be more come release day.

This is the type of book that only heats up if there’s ever a show made. Buy low, sell high.

  1. Killadelphia is from image not source point. also dont confuse the incentive with the store variant virgin. only 2 incentives on ebay a auction for 41 and a buy now at 199, lastly the incentive is a 1 per a store if they order 25 copies of cover A. so it will be pretty scarce.

    1. I put dividers up to avoid confusion.. my quick phrases I added for each book start before the pick and link.. so yes, Killadelphia is Image as the Source Point Press mention is for Misplaced..

    2. Wrong. Killadelphia #1 1:25 variant is ONE PER ACCOUNT, not ONE PER STORE. Since there are 2,144 Diamond accounts, this variant will have an order number equal to or less than 2,144.

      1. I’d imagine most consider 1 per Store is also one per account. I also thought it’s only available to account holders who actually order 25 copies of the regular covers that open up the order of 1 of the 1:25 ratio…

        1. Nope. There’s a difference. A ONE PER STORE variant, a Diamond account holder can order multiples if they have multiple stores on that account. And yes, like I said, if 2,144 accounts order 25 copies of the regular issue, they can order the 1:25. But they can only order 1 copy, even if they order 50, 75, 100, etc copies of the regular cover. 1 PER ACCOUNT. Dont know why Diamond severely limited this variant, but they did.

          1. Wouldn’t that be Image that set the rules on this variant and not Diamond? I guess they wanted the variant to be “extra special”…

I didn’t know account holders with multiple stores got the 1 per store for each of their stores.. I just figured the one per was just one per account. Hmm.. ya learn something new every day!

          2. And yes, I understood the only 1 variant after you qualify for it.. can’t order anymore. So it’s like a 1 per store but with a twist, only 1 per account and only after you order 25 copies.

          3. Correct on all counts, other than the fact that Diamond has just over 2,400 accounts. Their massive data leak last week confirmed that.

FWIW, my shop is in the top 20% of order volume, and we didn’t order enough to get the 1 per account variant. Certainly some shops smaller than mine will have stretched to get it (and some bigger than mine will have passed). I’d be surprised if there are more than 600-700 of these out there when it’s all done.

    1. midtown and other big stores didn’t order because isn’t didn’t have an foc. however its still in stock a t diamond. print run will be a big question on it

    2. Batman Beyond 2nd print is still scheduled for today’s release. Midtown doesn’t have them listed which I found odd, maybe they actually missed the ordering window.
