Poyo’s Trade and Hardcover Picks of the Week

We shouldn’t just collect or flip books, we should also read them. A good story can make your purchase well worth the money spent if you ask me. After all, we buy books to read for entertainment right? Even if you can’t flip them, reading is just as rewarding.

We tend to focus on mostly the floppy copies each week and kind of ignore the trades and hardcovers that come out week after week.

These can be one off books, collected editions or special editions. I go into these picks of mostly just the solicitations provided from the publishers. These are the ones that caught my attention coming out this week or within the next couple of weeks.

This first pick grabbed my attention because it’s Jeff Lemire and his writing is usually outstanding. I’ve never read any Animal Man out from DC but this new Omnibus has got me thinking I should pick it up for the potential great read. Plus being a Swamp Thing fan, that helps persuade me as well.

Animal Man by Jeff Lemire Omnibus HC

Buddy Baker has gone from ‘super’ man to family man-but is he strong enough to hold his family together when his young daughter starts to manifest her own dangerous powers? And when the world has fallen to the Rot, Animal Man forms an uneasy alliance with Swamp Thing.

Then, following the loss of his son, Animal Man finds he can’t mourn in peace without constant media intrusions that his newfound fame as an actor have brought about.

Collects Animal Man #0-29, Animal Man Annual #1-2 and Swamp Thing #12 and #17, plus a new introduction by Jeff Lemire!

I love the bronze age older stories and books. This one made the list because well, it’s just filled with potential pure awesomeness oldie goodiness.

House of Secrets the Bronze Age Omnibus HC Vol 02

Get ready for a monster-sized serving of spooky stories from the 1970s, as presented by your ghoulish h-h-host Abel from the pages of HOUSE OF SECRETS #112-154!

This title includes the never-before-published story ‘Night of the Rat,’ by writer Gerry Conway and artist Nestor Redondo, starring the Patchwork Man!

Gonna go broke if I keep picking these hefty Omnibuses..

I’m not watching the new show on HBO (since I don’t have HBO) but I’d imagine those who are and never actually read the books could benefit from picking up this next pick.

Watchmen Companion HC

The Watchmen Companion collects for the first time long-out-of-print, rarely seen material based on the landmark comic book series!

The Watchmen Companion includes the Watchmen: Watching the Watchmen and Watchmen: Taking out the Trash game modules, along with the Watchmen Sourcebook, released in 1990 as part of the DC Heroes role-playing game-sanctioned by Alan Moore, including illustrations by artist Dave Gibbons created especially for the game, and expanding on the mythos of the Watchmen series.

This volume also collects pages from Who’s Who in The DC Universe featuring the Watchmen and Minutemen characters, The Question #17 (guest-starring Rorschach!) and a page from the rare, promotional DC Spotlight #1 from 1985 that marked the very first appearance of the Watchmen cast in print!

It’s only a matter of time before we find the Defenders in the MCU. Bring on the classics I say.. here’s a new printing of some of the best out of Marvel.

Avengers Defenders War Trade

They are the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and greatest Defenders. They have thwarted the attacks of aliens, monsters and even gods. But now, they face their greatest foe: each other! Loki, the Avengers’ fiirst and greatest enemy, has teamed with Dormammu, Master of the Dark Arts, to rebuild the shattered Evil Eye — enabling the Dark Dimension to expand until it fi nally is able to swallow the Earth and rid the evil pair of their enemies …forever! But trust between enemies is rare. And soon, each has recruited his former foes as allies. As the Avengers attempt to devise a way to stop the Defenders from succeeding in Dormammu’s quest, the Defenders accuse the Avengers of acting under the control of Loki. What follows is a battle between two of comics’ most popular super-hero teams! Witness the super-powered match-ups of: Hawkeye vs. Iron Man, Namor vs. Captain America, Hulk vs. Thor, Silver Surfer vs. Vision and Scarlet Witch! Collecting
