Poyo’s Spec and Drek for July 1st, 2020

Welcome to this weeks spec and drek. It’s a super small week. No DC, Marvel, Dark Horse and only a few select others.

First things first. I listed a bunch of Hip Hop Variants that are all charity auctions on eBay. So yeah, if you missed out on the Hip Hop variants that Marvel was pumping out a few years back and or want to bid to donate to what I think is a a good cause, then check them out. You can see my forum post I made in the new For Sale and Trading category by clicking here.

So I only have two picks this week and there’s no point in even breaking them down by publisher.

Devils Highway #1 from AWA.

Shadow Children #1 from Red Giant. For you Stranger Things fans, sounds like it’s right up that alley. None on eBay at time of writing, sold out at most online retailers. Might be hard to find.

Now on with the dreaded “drek” pick, every writer and artists worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work. The book to avoid or not fall victim to in buying at ratio inflated prices.

Do not spend your hard earned cash on the Silver or Gold Negan Lives variants. Talk about a ripoff! Whoever bought the Gold Variant off Midtown for $440.00 and or the Silver Variant for $176.00 is a bonehead with too much money. Sorry, I hate to call people names but seriously…     I know of better things to buy than a variant that will be half the value in just a few days or weeks time. Bravo to you eBay sellers who listed these as “Ultra Rare”..  there’s nothing rare about a 1 per store variant. There will be thousands of these out there. That’s not rare in the least.

1 per store variants are horrible spec unless there’s a first appearance involved and in this particular case, the Walking Dead magically becomes the most popular television show in cable once again. Expect these to be dead on arrival… err, shortly after.

Unless you buy the Silver or Gold copies from your local shop to support them, avoid this like a person who has COVID..

    1. It’s not hatred now, it’s just common sense. Yes, Walking Dead got me back into comics and now it’s the very thing I dislike about comics.

Buy if you like or buy to support your shop but investing up to $500 for a 1 per store variant is just a bonehead move if you ask me. I know of plenty of other comics I’d buy for $500 before this modern piece of hot garbage. It’s not rare, it will never be rare. And from what I read, it’s not each diamond account that got one, each store front got the variants. So yes, Midtown ended up with what.. at least 4 or 5 of these Gold Variants?

Classy for Kirkman to front it all up front for free to support shops? Sure… I mean, it’s just payback for all the shops making him millions of dollars over the past decade or so… 😉

  1. Had asked my LCS to put me down for all 3 because I thought they were just regular variants not 400 DOLLAR VARIANTS…may just buy a 20 dollar book off the wall

  2. My lcs puts one per store variants out with he regulars at cover…may have to look for this one!

These are gonna sink like stones come Wednesday morning…

  3. Any reason why these Negan Lives variants are expensive? Was that a price provided by Image, or did people’s hype blow them up?

    1. Stores are asking whatever for them because it is 100% profit that goes to help the store. Kirkman paid for it all including shipping to the stores.

      1. So, seeing as how it wasn’t an incentive variant….is it blasphemy to ask more than cover price, like open order variants?

  4. My LCS wanted $300 for the gold and $100 for the silver. I just couldn’t justify it. Would much rather spend those $ on other books.

    1. Like I said, if you just got lots of cash burning a hole in your wallet and you wanna support your local shop, by all means, spend hundreds on a book that will not be anywhere worth that much in weeks or months time.. 😉

  5. I passed on a Silver for $100 at my LCS and they’re already down to $50 on the bay. As much as I love Negan, the cover sucks balls so I won’t pay more than $20 if I see them on shelves tomorrow.
