Poyo’s Spec for August 5th, 2020

Welcome to this weeks spec and drek, where we pick the winners each week we think will be spec worthy, a great read or just cool looking art on the cover. I also dive into the pesky drek, the book you should probably avoid if you can or perhaps not invest so heavily into.

DC Picks

This is a no brainer pick. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, this should come as no surprise.

Dark Night Death Metal Legends of the Dark Knights #1

The next pick goes to Batman #96. Another pickup with a first appearance by Clownhunter, who’s likely being overshadowed by the Robin King hype (hopefully everyone saw our spoilers we posted a few days ago).

There is also the Batman #96 (Card Stock F Mattina Variant) Joker War variant of Catwoman. And of course, there’s the 1:25 variant that has the design of Clownhunter on the cover that’s a decent pickup if you can find for cheap. If the character sticks around, this could be the bigger winner besides the regular cover.

Marvel Picks

Thor #4 2nd Print is already a winner in pre-sales so it’s the Marvel no brainer pickup if you can find them out in the wild.

There is also a Thor #3 3rd printing that’s a design variant. As it’s pretty cool, I don’t expect it to see as much love as some of the others since most are wanting Black Winter to appear on the cover in some fashion. But it’s still a cool design variant for those who love design variants. Pick it up for the PC or the Thor complete set run.

Empyre #4 continues. It’s a big event crossover book, lots of tie-ins but sometimes new stuff gets created out of these so they’re always on the check and watch list. There’s a bunch of covers as usual for this issue like all event books. Pick the one you like most to start off..

Small Publisher and Indie Picks

It’s the last of the mini-series and these weren’t that easy to find. But it’s Momoko and I think some might of laughed when I was picking these originally..  who’s laughing now? You gotta spend a little extra for the first two issues if you’re a Crow or Peach fan to put this set together. The Crow Lethe #3 is out this week.

Crow Lethe #3 (of 3) (Cover A - Momoko)

Ice Cream Man #20 is just awesome. Buy it for the cover and for being a Dr. Seuss fan. Also helps that it’s pretty much already a $20 book for you flippers..

Normally I probably wouldn’t pick this type of book but with some of the other AWA books starting to heat up, might not be a bad pickup.

Bad Mother #1 has one other thing going for it, Deodato Jr. doing the interior artwork. Let’s just hope the story is good.

Horizon Zero Dawn #1 finally makes it debut on store shelves and has a pretty awesome looking Peach Momoko cover. Although the Peach heat has settled down since all these retailers are overworking her it seems, this is still a must pickup for me as I like most of her work and I’m a huge fan of the game itself. I’ve also read this first issue already and it’s a pretty great read. Anyone who plays and loves the game should be pleased. I’m looking forward to the upcoming issues for this one.

This one has lots of covers. I do believe TFAW still has most if not all of them still available for pre-order.

If you’re like Blind Adam, you’ll probably be buying this one for the boobs on the cover. There’s a lot of different covers out there so I say stick with the Torque variant for Patriotika #1.

They could probably just put nothing but blank pages and you nerds will still gobble these up to stare and drool over..

Now on with the dreaded “drek” pick, every writer and artists worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work. The book to avoid or not fall victim to in buying at ratio inflated prices.

So, there’s some virgin store variants of both Thor #4 2nd print and Thor #3 3rd print..  don’t even waste your dollars on such nonsense. Just find the books with dressing on them. There’s no reason to buy at a huge premium for the same cover art minus the Thor Logo and such.

And I’m just gonna go ahead and say it. Do not spend over cover price for Legends of the Dark Knights #1, unless you really want it in the collection. If you intend to flip, mark this as a missed opportunity and wait for the next big flip and hope you catch it early.

  1. Gonna get the regulars & idk I’ve already spent more than enough on the past few 1:25’s but maybe I’ll get the Batman darkest knight legend of the robin king after dark nights during death metal because it would be a 1st cover as well of both characters ?

  2. Idk about your recommendation suggesting the price of Legends will not go up over the long term, the only reason I think the eBay price of the book will go down is because people will be selling off their reader copies so they will be selling off their copies in less desirable condition. In addition many comic book stores will have a 1 limit per person sale in which people will be forced to either not read their copy or read it, in which they will probably read it, making the condition less desirable in most cases. And with a 1 copy per person limit there will be a greater amount of people with the issue (so a greater quantity of sellers on the 2ndary market) than comics that are bought in mass quantities and horded by a smaller group of people. I think the price of the NM copies or better will at least hold their value or increase over time with the use of the character. Sure you don’t want to spend $25 to flip the book if you missed out, but it is still a well desired book…

    1. It’s hard to tell. Past history always shows huge hype and FOMO on pre-sales we always see dips after release day. What’s being listed right now is people with retailer accounts with possibly a few that believe their actual orders will come through. Once this starts landing in people’s hands, particularly those who flip, there’s going to be a whole lot more.

So yeah, if you really want it, watch the market, you might find cheap on release day or snag at cover price at your local shop. But what I’m saying is, if you miss out on the flip, then it’s not wise to buy at premium prices unless you know full and well it’s gonna keep going up… which is a riskier gamble.

When it comes to spec and flipping, the key is, buy low, sell high. Not buy at premium in hopes you can sell at a bigger premium.

    2. I’ve also already heard chatter from people who have secured dozens of copies, which most intend to likely flip so they can move on to the next hot book..

So yes, while shops might be limiting to 1 per, there’s a flipper for every collector out there that has handful of copies compared to the person who was slow and only able to snag a single copy.

  3. I agree, with what you are saying, in addition the release date to the 2nd print (2 weeks after the 1st print) is going to negatively affect the value because people who missed out on the 1st print will have access to obtaining the comic quicker. But I believe the limit 1 per customer at most shops will affect the condition to the 1st prints because more and more people will be forced to read their only copy and not have an extra one to sell on the 2ndary market in almost perfect condition, due from them having to read their only copy and not being able to wait 2 weeks for the 2nd print to come out. I think there will be a wide range of secondary prices for the comic come release due to the fact that some will be reader copies and some will be unread copies. There will be a discrepancy between the collectors/speculators copies and die hard comic book fan reader copies. We’ll see.

  4. How do you think batman 96’s clownhunter will do? I feel he is just a quick flip character. I don’t like how he looks.

    1. I only think he has potential because he’s not another villain that’s part of the Joker’s crew.. But it’s hard to tell how he’ll hold up. I do think he’s being overshadowed by Robin King hype though.. so it makes it a great way to swoop in, buy low and hold to see how it does down the road.

      1. Well at 2.79 an issue I don’t think I can really lose money on him. So I pre-ordered a few issues of him to flip, and they did an article on him in CBR a few months ago, so that will add publicity. But I just don’t like how he looks hahaha.

      1. If ya want to talk about Venom #27 or any other future book or past book that’s not part of this weeks picks, that’s why we started the forums.

Join the existing conversations, start a new one.. 🙂

  5. I think Legends will do fine over the long haul. Most of these FOMO pops always spike, dip, and settle. The true winners rise over time. For a flipper, you move on. For investors, you hold and sit.

    1. Yup. That’s a reason advocated for those who aren’t flipping, first wait to see if you can’t snag at cover on release day.. if you miss out there, then if you really want/need for collection or the long haul, hopefully buy during the possible dip before it slowly goes up…
