Poyo’s FOC Highlight Books for Last Call 11/02/2020

FOC is the last chance to put in your orders with your comic shops and likely get at a discount for pre-ordering.

It’s another great Dr. Seuss homage for Ice Cream Man #20 which is a LCSD Variant. The previous prints for this, particularly the first printing goes for some decent cash. Give these new covers time, I can only see them continue to go up as more collectors seek them out.

LCSD 2020 Ice Cream Man #20You can still find the 3rd print available as well.

I really like the look of this next cover. It’s a LCSD #1 for X of Swords Destruction #1 Henrichon LCSD Variant.

X of Swords Destruction #1 (Henrichon LCSD Variant) XOSPeach Momoko could just do the interiors of this next book and character. It’s totally her style.

Usagi Yojimbo Wanderer’s Road #1

She’s also doing the covers for Usagi Yojimbo Wanderers Road #2 (of 6) Peach Momoko Cover and Usagi Yojimbo Wanderers Road #3 (of 6) Peach Momoko Cover, which we can probably determine she’ll be doing all the covers in this series.

Usagi Yojimbo Wanderers Road #1 Peach Momoko CoverThe big King in Black main event title is now on FOC for the first issue. Lots of covers, lots of likely retailer exclusives. If you just can’t decide, go with Cover A. But Cates could have a lot of twists and surprises up his sleeves for this event. Who knows what’s going to happen, new characters, deaths and so on. It’s one of the first big event titles that we should pay attention to as I can see Marvel using this in some future film.

King in Black #1 (of 5) (Momoko Variant)
King in Black #1 (of 5) (Black Blank Variant)
King in Black #1 (of 5) (Coello Dragon Variant)

King in Black #1 (of 5)

And sticking to the Cates train..  Thor #10 is also on FOC, which is another series to keep a watchful eye on now that it’s kicking off a more serious story arc from it’s 2 issue silly break type of arc….

    1. New to viewing comics as an investment, what’s a better/rarer buy for KIng in black, Hidden gems (1:100) or the stegman premiere (2 per store)?

Ended up going with the premiere at £30 Vs the hidden gems at £50.

      1. Well, ratio variants aren’t usually good investments long term. The only time they pay off is if a new character debuts with a first appearance within the issue. Main title events in the past with ratio variants don’t fare very well (I have a Secret Empire 1 per store I got for cover and I still can’t sell it for more than $5-$10). Most of the time if you can get ratio variants cheap, they’re quick flip profit makers and you sell as fast as it reaches your hands.

        1. Would you say they are decent scalping items for potential hype issues like this?

Is buying above cover price and looking to sell for small monetary, high percentage on release a valid strategy or a bad high risk move?

E.g. for this title buying at £30 and looking to sell at £45-60 (150-200%) on day one?

For mid-long is it best to then get main covers at current FMV rather than any variants?

          1. “Would you say they are decent scalping items for potential hype issues like this?”

Sometimes, sometimes they’re not. For myself, it’s rare I’ll pay more than cover for an Image ratio variant. I have a shop that sells all books for cover so if I know they’re selling well above cover, I might nab if available.

Is buying above cover price and looking to sell for small monetary, high percentage on release a valid strategy or a bad high risk move?

Profit is profit. Just gotta use your best judgement on when to sell. If you can make profit and that’s your goal, sell while people are buying and have zero regrets later on if they sell for more than you sold. Holding too long is what normally results in a bad spec move. This is why I don’t normally gamble on ratio variants, the initial buy-in unless you’re paying cover price is the risk. The name of the game is, buy low, sell high. Not buy high and hope to sell even higher (this only applies on moderns, bronze and older are a different game).

E.g. for this title buying at £30 and looking to sell at £45-60 (150-200%) on day one?

Not sure what math you’re using but if you buy at £30 and sold for £60, that’s 100% profit or ROI, not 200% unless a friend gave you that £30 to buy it with… hehe. So that’s not a bad flip to be honest even at 100% ROI (Return on Investment).

For mid-long is it best to then get main covers at current FMV rather than any variants?

I’m more of the buy low (cover) and sell high type of flipper. Cover priced books won’t break the bank and if they never heat up or even if one holds too long (they heat up and then die off, never to heat up again), you’re initial investment is not losing much as you might be able to sell at cover price to break even, etc.

So I’m a big advocate of, I’d rather spend $20 on 5 copies of a book that has potential than spending $20 or more on 1 issue of a ratio variant that might result in selling less than what I paid.

      1. Cruzzer your comment tipped my scale and I went for it getting 50 copies with all the ratios. This could be a sleeper. My buy in is $150 I think I can get that outta the variants.

    1. No, because nobody will likely care until maybe they show up in the MCU and even then, they’ll never be mainstream. If they do heat up, it’ll be very short lived FOMO at best.

  1. I just placed an order for Icecream man #20. Such cool covers. I love issue #17 superman homage and issue #8s creepy clown in a coffin covers.

  2. J Scott Campbell fans may want to look at Killadelphia #10 cover b, pretty nice cover. Could be a sleeper in three weeks.
