Every week hundreds of new books hit the stands, each with potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are the picks of the week for delivery 4/14/21

It is a huge week, lots of new series and new #1’s. Plus a couple of new characters popping up.

New villains! New allies! A thrilling overseas adventure begins for the Dark Knight, starting with an extra-sized 26-page debut story!

Duplicant #1 – Very cool looking new series from Second Sight. This has sold out early on many of the big online stores. Duplicant is a thriller about the forces conspiring against the one man who offers hope during a pandemic. That man is Matt Travers, a scientist who creates duplicate organs that saves humanity from the organ failure contagion… only their high cost forces people into indentured servitude. In answer to this, a dangerous black market arises which is run by a religious fanatic and Matt’s former mentor. Following Matt’s life-changing encounter with a “Duplicant,” a recipient of his technology, he comes to question everything he knows as he strives to learn the truth behind his encounter.

Freakshow Knight #1 – Another cool looking new series from Second Sight. During his time in prison, Red was surrounded by the worst types of people: thieves, rapists, and murderers. Now on the outside, he’s surrounded by the living dead. Armed with the only thing he’s ever known – violence – Red finds one last chance at redemption for a lifetime of sin.

Challenge Of The Super Sons #1 – New DC book focusing on Robin and Superbly picking up where Adventures of the Super Sons left off

Locke & Key Sandman Hell & Gone #1 – crossing over the worlds of Sandman and Locke and Key. Cool crossover.

Locust #1 – New Scout series. Most of humanity has fallen victim to a terrible plague that has turned them into giant locusts. As the locusts consume the earth, the uninfected survivors struggle to stay alive. During the “Great Transformation” a fisherman and his elderly mother try to escape a decimated New York City. Can they survive?

Jules Vernes Lighthouse #1 – At the edge of the galaxy, there is a giant supercomputer known as the Lighthouse. The only brain powerful enough to navigate ships through a sargasso of naturally occurring wormholes, potentially cutting months or even years off a spaceship’s journey. Three humans, one alien, and a nanny bot have manned the remote station for years in relative peace until the arrival of Captain Kongre and his band of cutthroat pirates threatens the future of civilization and reveals that each of the Lighthouse crew has been hiding a shocking secret.

Spider-Man Spiders Shadow #1 – Chip Zdarsky doing a What If? style tale of Peter Parker keeping the symbiote.

Man Goat And The Bunny Man #1 – Normally we do not spotlight Zenescope books, but, well, this one is insane. Bigfoot, the Jersey Devil, the Loch Ness Monster. All are age old folklore fodder, but could they actually be real? In recent years the myth of Man Goat and The Bunny Man has grown locally, and many have claimed sightings of the two unique creatures; yet no concrete evidence exists… And that’s exactly how they want it! Dealing with the things nightmares are made of so we don’t have to – deranged mutants, satanic cults, demons, summer vacationers – Man Goat and the Bunny Man protect us from the evils that hide in plain sight. But they don’t want your adoration, they just want to be left alone!

Phantom On The Scan #1 – New Cullen Bunn book, and they are always worth picking up. Cullen has had a ton of optioned books, plus he is an awesome writer. Twenty years ago, a comet fell to earth. Since that night, Matthew has been haunted – haunted by a spirit that gives him incredible psychic abilities. But these abilities come with a price…and payment is due. Every time Matthew uses his gifts, he draws closer to death, and other psychics – all of whom gained their powers on the night the comet fell – are dying in the most horrible of ways. To save himself, Matthew gathers a group of psychics to solve the mystery of their powers before it’s too late.

Notable Reprints
Batman Black & White #3 2nd Ptg Design Variant – Tim Fox’s sister graces the cover as the possible new Robin.

One and Done
Darkhawk Heart Of The Hawk #1 (One Shot) – One shot featuring the fan favorite character Darkhawk. His original solo series has been steadily rising over the years.

Ones to Watch
Guardians Of The Galaxy #13 – New team of Guardians start this issue.

Small Press Pick of the Week
Canto & The City Of Giants #1 – New stories in the beloved, and now optioned, world of Canto. Canto has been a must pick up, and great sales coming off the book.

Pick of the Week
Joker #2 – Good luck finding the 1:50 Variant. Needless to say this issue introduces Bane’s daughter, Vengeance, who I am sure is pretty pissed about Joker killing her father.

  1. Freakshow Knight is actually the second comic in writer Jonathan Hedrick’s zombie apocalypse comic series. The first comic is “Freakshow Princess.” Freakshow Knight is the second book. The third issue is “Jonathan Hedrick’s Freakshow Jester,” written by David Galiano with art by Gino Kasmyanto.
