Comic Picks of the Week for Delivery 1/18/23

Every week, tons of new books hit the stands, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we think have the best shot at heating up. Here are the picks of the week for delivery this Wednesday

Hey Wednesday Warriors. First somewhat interesting week for the new year with a decent amount of releases.

New #1’s
Barbaric Hell To Pay #1 Vault Comics – Vault’s barbarian series returns with a new axe wielder.

Final Gamble #1 Band of Bards Comics – Gambling addict Danny Lin, and disgraced MMA fighter Jasmeet Khanna have both fallen on hard times. Owing an enormous amount of money to a loan shark named Mandy, they are offered the chance to save themselves by winning the money they need-in a game of poker against her. Unable to work together, the two men are easily defeated. As a result of their defeat, the two become prisoners of The Mercury Society, a group composed of the richest and most powerful people in the world. In this unforgiving Hell, people are forced to fight to the death in an elite gamble for their souls.

Immortal Sergeant #1 Image – On the eve of his unwelcome retirement, Jim Sargent (aka ‘Sarge’) a grizzled, old-school detective, catches a break on a murder case that’s haunted him for decades. Unfortunately, Sarge must drag his anxiety-riddled adult son, Michael, along for the ride or risk losing the lead forever. Can this dysfunctional duo overcome their own hang-ups, blindspots, and secrets to catch a killer?

Maeve Rising Warrior #1 Red 5 – Discover the story of Maeve, Ireland’s greatest heroine of antiquity. The Irish warrior Queen of Connacht, who became High Queen of all Ireland and an Irish Goddess, through her will, strength and prowess over men. Her name means ‘intoxicating.’ She was the most beautiful and powerful woman in ancient Ireland more than 2000 years ago. Skilled in the arts of Celtic Druid magic and sorcery, learn how she discovers her powers and strengths to become Ireland’s greatest female hero!

Maniac Of New York Dont Call It A Comeback #1 – Aftershock’s slasher/killer series continues. Maniac Harry is dead, and there is a new maniac stalking the streets. There is a 1:15 Variant available showing the new female mask wearer.

Tim Seeleys Lucky #1 Keenspot- Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash) creates a new super hero series.

Wasp #1 Marvel – Following up on the Antman Series, Marvel turns its attention on Janet Van Dyne. 1:25 Variant available

White Savior #1 Dark Horse – Samurai Satire. An ancient prophecy foretold of an outsider that would save the peaceful village of Inoki from an unstoppable army–a man who would confuse the people at first with his unconventional ways, but lead them to the light. Nathan Garin, Captain in the United States Army, known for his viciousness in battle on the American frontier, could be that man . . . if he weren’t such an awful, drunken idiot. Now it’s up to Japanese-American teacher Todd Parker to warn the good people of Inoki of Garin’s true nature before he causes the very death and destruction they are counting on him to avert!

Notable Reprints
Amazing Spider-Man #14 Cover G 2nd Ptg – First appearance of Hallow’s Eve gets reprinted.

For the Cover

Vampire Slayer #10 – I can honestly say I have no idea what is going on in the Buffy-verse. But this cover is creepy.

Ones To Watch
Lazarus Planet Assault On Krypton #1 – Jon Kent appears as Superman Blue on cover (not on inside)

Batman One Bad Day Bane #1 – Bane gets a new villain of his own, Grudge.

Wakanda #4 – Tosin gets a girlfriend this issue. Hopefully the “Next Miles Morales” will finally be used in an meaningful way.

Pick of the Week
Batman Superman Worlds Finest #11 Jack White Variant – Music and Comic crossovers have been white hot lately. This could be another hit. These are being listed for $20 and up with Completed sales in the same range.

    1. Its a great cover, but when I see stores selling them for $15 and buy one get one free (Combined) I tend to shy away as a good buy. But it is a good looking cover.
