Comics Picks of the Week for 2/12/14

Each week hundreds of new books come out, each one holds hope, most of which don’t live up to the potential. Each week we pick the ones we feel have the best shot of succeeding.
The Small Press Heavy Hitter:
Bunker #1– No doubt this is the small press darling of the week. The book is the print version of the web-comic. The comic already has a tv deal. It is small press, Oni said to expect about the same print run as Letter 44. The first issue is already selling out on-line, so it might not be a bad idea to already look at Issue #2 and Issue #3
The small press book you should be reading anyway:
Letter 44 #4– Charles Soule really has been bringing it with the book. As the story continues to unfold we are finding out more about what is happening in space
The new Image #1:
Mercenary Sea #1– ‘NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT’ Action and adventure set in 1938-The South Seas. Japan has invaded China. War in Europe is imminent. Ex-bootlegger Jack Harper captains The Venture, a refitted German U-Boat, with a crew of expats, mercenaries and treasure hunters. They do whatever it takes to stay afloat, often running up against pirates, headhunters, spies, and soldiers. They’re always one step away from the greatest score of their lives…or their certain demise.
The Walking Dead Book of the week:
Walking Dead #121– Walking Dead is always a good pick. Even with the larger print run numbers they are putting up, they sell out, and end up rising in price.
The one you are probably going to pick up anyway:
Manifest Destiny #4– Book continues to rise in value (issue one that is) I swear there will end up being a media deal on this book.
Well that is it for this week. Let us know what you are spec-ing on this week.

  1. Buy every copy of Batman #28 Steampunk Variant you can as fast as you can, this issue has some blockbuster stuff that will blow up tomorrow once people read it, huge surprises and a surprise sneak peak into the future.

    1. @Trey, is this the variant cover you are talking about:
Batman #28 Howard Chaykin 1/25 Variant Cover
      Why are you quoting ‘steampunk’?
I looked on the DC website, and the only Variant listed for ish 28 is by Howard Chaykin (1/25)?
Help us out kid! You can’t just throw something out there and not spill on it for us! Just kidding……..
Seriously, WHY SHOULD I GO OUT AND CHASE THIS BOOK?
Trust me, inquiring minds want to know! AND QUICK!!!!!!!!!

  2. Sacajawea!!!!!!!!!! Manifest #4 should be a hot one. I’m looking forward to Devils Hopyard. Bunker #1 Francavilla is sold out at midtown…look out for this one.

  3. OK Trey, this Batman #28 Steampunk Variant is your show.
I’ve taken your comics expertise advice and snagged a Variant copy for $11 (+ s/h)…Total $16 spend!
I see a few on EBAY for max of $20 + s/h, so this spend is very much at my max for buying spek books!
I’m with you dude…keep us posted regarding the heat surrounding this book!
Also, I can get a few copies for 8.90 Euros ($12.10) each from a European source who may or may not be up on the news yet.
WAIT A MINUTE, WHAT NEWS? THERE’S NOTHING YET…NO NEWS, NO HOTNESS….NOTHING….TREY, WHY AM I CHASING THIS BOOK???????????
Jeez, this game will be the end of me!!!!!!!
Thanks for the post though…this is the kind of heads-up spek’n that can make you a lot of money in this game!
Naw, fellah, seriously, this is a good heads-up! I see the prices on EBAY going up for this 1/25 Variant of an already super-hot title like Batman! I have a feeling that you may be on to something here!
Ok, you’ve made my mind up…I’m going in!
I’m going to grab an additional 5-7 copies from my source over here, and see what happens.
I know the #28 story is a reveal of some deep, digressed part of Batman’s past, but like you said, if it is BLOCKBUSTER REVEAL, then this ish will take off, and obviously the 1/25 Chaykin Variant will lead the way!
    Nice one…Cheers!!!!!!!!

  4. Looks like the bunker #1 had sold out on Oni press’ website! Very impressive… I will be buying more if I see it on the shelf at the LCS.

    1. Just ran out to the LCS located within walking distance of the prestigious down town office of comicsheatingup. I grabbed the last copy. The doors open at 11:00 and by 11:05 they had sold out.

      1. Man I should’ve ordered more of the francavilla variant when I had the chance. This book is blowing up! Oh well, Lesson learned. I’m still a speck newbie with a lot to learn…

        1. I have gotten 3 regulars so far and the store that I go to was shorted on the variants but are getting them next week
By the way Drew, no luck on the Strain. I was sadly disappointed that both of my local area shops had pulled their copies off the racks. I will be out next Monday hitting a bunch if stores and will look for them for you.

  5. What is the cover split on Bunker #1? When I purchased I thought it was just an A/B cover split 50/50 but apparently the Francavilla variant is a rarer cover.
