Comics Picks of the Week for delivery 3/26/14

Each week hundred’s of new books hit the stands each with potential. Each week we pick the ones we have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks for 3/26/14 delivery:

The Small press gems:
Necromantical- Ardden has had a few hits in the past. Some of their books have shot up in value, most have stabilized back down. With small print runs and interesting story, this one could heat up.
Ghost Wolf #1 Amigo Comics has yet to hit it out of the park, spec-wise. However, they turn in good stories wth solid art. Westwood Witches is a fave of mine. Definitely check this one out based on small print runs and solid stories. Looks and feels similar to Ghost Rider.
The “Speaking of Ghost Rider” one:
All New Ghost Rider #1 Got a preview copy of this and it is good. I love Tradd Moore’s art, and he really shows off his eye for design with this book. Can’t help but think this could be one of those over looked gems eventually. Not going to shoot up in value, but people said that about Hawkeye too.
The ones you are going to get anyway:
Sheltered #8– solid book month after month. They just announced in the comic last issue that there was a movie deal, we knew that already.
Manhattan Projects #19– some of the spec shine wore off due to delays, but still a solid read.
That is it for tonight, let us know what you are spec-ing on this week.

  1. Small Press: I may spec on the following small press book:
    Thaniel #1
    OSSM Comics
    Release: 3/26/2014
    Writer: Omar Spahi
    Artist: Terry Huddleston
    Description
Throughout the universe there is one constant; everything dies. Growing up on the streets, losing everyone closest to him, Thaniel knows this harsh reality all too well. Born with a mysterious power that he’s struggling to control, Thaniel begins to wonder if those he loves are gone because of him.
I’m sure it will have an EXTREMELY low print run, but I’ll grab a couple to check out the content and artwork.
I’m not familiar with the writer or artist, so who knows what it will
    be like.
I suppose it sort of reads a little like the old Knighthawk character of the 90’s (which didn’t take off at all) without the animate object (amulet) for power.
Anybody else remotely intrigued by this small press title?

      1. Hahahhaha, yes, you are correct Corona…Darkhawk! Those are the dusty books that I’m still holding from the 90’s!

    1. Seeing the previews of it, I just have zero desire to pick it up. I might miss out on a flip but to me, I think it’s gonna end up like Watson and Holmes. Has a bunch of potential but is gonna likely fall flat after a few issues, steam will cool and everyone will forget about it pretty quickly… but that’s just my hunch!

      1. I’m not seeing it only list to pick up. Midtown doesn’t have it listed as being released today. Hmmm.. they’ve been late and pushed back before..

  2. Looks like Necromantical is getting delayed… Just like devils hopyard did. Might have the same spec trajectory as well. Silver surfer has a francavilla variant. And of course bunker #2 will be huge. And I’m all over the ghost rider animal variant… Who doesn’t love a flaming hamster!

    1. I saw that and it cracked me up. I got my copy (regular cover) of the first issue of Ghost Rider nearly two weeks ago and I really liked it. Silver Surfer with a Fracavilla cover, might have to pick one up. My local comic shop has a really cool store variant I will be picking up.

      1. I’ve seen the previews for ghost rider and love the art. Don’t know much about Tradd Moore, but I think I’m going to have to check out some of his other stuff (Luther strode).

        1. Luthor Strode was a fan boy fantasy. Geeky kid orders work out plan from the back of a comic and ends up getting a mysterious power. He goes the vigilante route. Gratuitous violence and tragedy results. Good stuff. Tradd also did the art for the second issue of Zero and some Deadpool and other Marvel cover work.

      2. Yeah, I’ve already ordered a copy of the Francavilla cover of Silver Surfer. It’s very simplistic but very cool looking cover.

  3. All, as I do, I emailed the folks at OSSM, and the editor-n-chief (Siike Donnelly) responded with the following information & ‘print-run’ details:
    Hey Ken,
It’s in stores April 9th. No variant covers or special editions. We printed a few thousand. Most went to comic stores, but we ordered a few extra to have for Cons too. 🙂
Could be decent info to have if you are looking at spec’n on this book.
    Just trying to share!
