Spread convention teaser going nuts on eBay

Um, yeah, this is a thing. I pointed out yesterday that there was a Spread Convention Teaser (Yellow Variant) up for sale on eBay yesterday.
At the time it started it was an opening bid of $55. That copy of the Spread Convention Teaser Yellow quickly surpassed the reserve of $100 and has shot up to $400. After that one was listed and started doing crazy things, two more popped up. One currently going for $299 with a day left, and one that had a buy it now for under $299. In addition, the Blue Spread Convention Teaser copies have been selling for $150.
There were only 50 made of the Yellow teaser. Three of which have popped up on eBay, and I have a copy. That leaves 46 copies out there somewhere, well 45, as I know someone who has a copy as well.
The blue teaser had 200 copies made. They are going for around $150. Not bad for a book that sold for $25 last month (boy, I hope the seller does not feel the sting of letting them go too early, sure e made profit on them but….)
Then there is the grail. The black and white convention teaser that was limited to 20 copies. These went to friends and family. None have popped up on ebay, but if one did, it would do crazy money.
In addition to the teasers, the first issue has sold out and has become hard to find. Spread #1 is selling for multiple times cover price, with a lot of 10 going for $65.
I can say that I was told the print run, and sworn to secrecy. Don’t bother asking, I won’t tell. But I can say that the book may be more desirable once the print run is officially released.
Thanks to Jeremy A. for the tip.

  1. I’m sorry but that seems like a monumental waste of money. I see regret in someone’s future.

      1. This is a modern book, and modern books don’t tend to hold value. There are so many better silver/bronze key book that I would rather spend hundreds of dollars on that would not only retain value but increase in future value. And IF I were to spend hundreds on a modern book, I would rather throw down on the Saga RRP. JMHO.

      2. not to mention in a few months you will probably be able to buy it for a lot less…

    1. Some people put no price on a complete collection. If they are doing it for investment purpose then yes it will likely be regret. But if they are after a complete set of things, and are rich, it might not be.
Investment wise yes, i’d have rather have throw 300$ at one hundred issues of #1.

  2. I’m happy with my Spread #1 regular cover for $1.79. Crap I forgot to watch The Strain.

    1. It was essentially the first issue. Which was the slowest of all the issues. It was good. Set things up. Just a little action. I know it’s based off the books but looks like it used the comic as story boards.

  3. I forgot it was a $3.50 book so I double checked and DCBS only charged $1.75. They do a lot of #1 issues at 50% off. I got 2 copies of Outcast #1 for $1.49 each also.

  4. Off topic* The Strain is getting great reviews ..i wanna old on to my #1 but ive been seeing the prices slowly rising ..could it be the next walking dead or is this just a flash in the pan

    1. I think they will be happy if they get 1/3rd the viewers of walking dead. If they start pushing over 10million avg viewers then it is a hit. I don’t think it is the next walking dead but I do think it will be very popular.

      1. It fills the void for the Walking Dead fans who have to wait the miserable 5-6 months between seasons. 😉

          1. Yeah, I tried the same thing with my wife (who loves the WD) and she skipped it, said she’ll catch up later.

  5. Not sure if anyone noticed but the second listing of the Spread Yellow Convention Teaser sold for just $299.99 with only one bid. The other one that started at $55 and shot up to $400 is now back down to $375 after it appears someone retracted their bid (was at 20 bids, now down to 19). I guess when they saw the other one sell for $100 less, they felt they were overspending.

        1. Yeah. I hope it wasn’t someone just trying to drive up the price.
Down to $102 now. Wow. If I was the seller, I’d just cancel it. Something fishy going on.

          1. The seller is legit. I know him. Was asked to not mention him as a conflict of interest exists. Shady bidders maybe. I emailed the seller and asked what happened. Needless to say. This is on special now and I would throw in some bids if I was chasing one.

            1. Yeah, it’s back in a price range that is now appealing to me even now. 🙂
I doubt it’s shill bidding by the seller, I honestly think it’s a chain reaction of one retracting and the other one wasn’t expecting to actually win, so they retract, etc..

      1. My only guess now is people put in their max bids, got outbid, now with all the retractions, more people decided they didn’t want to bid that high. It’s like the retractions caused a chain reaction across the bidders. Maybe some got outbid but found it elsewhere. That sucks for the seller for sure…
