Comics Picks of the Week for 10/1/14

First day of the month starts out with new comics. Not a bad way for the start of October. Each week hundreds of new comics hit the stands, each one with potential. Some live up to the potential, some more than others. Each week we pick the books we think will have the best chance for heating up. Here are our picks for the week for delivery 10/1/14.
This week is a big week so we are going to just jump right into it.
The ones everyone will get anyway:
Thor #1– No way to pass this up. The media has already gotten a hold of the fact that there will be a female character (again) as Thor. Hype like this causes books to sell out, and go back for reprints. Expect the book to sell out and go back for a reprint. There are a bunch of variants on this one, including a super rare black and white Alex Ross Variant.
The Surprise DC one on the list:
Gotham Academy #1 Think Batman meets Lumberjanes. Fangirls are the new it, so books like this will be sought after.

GOTHAM ACADEMY is a new, monthly teen drama set in the shadow of Batman and the craziness of Gotham City, with new characters and old plus a secret tie to Gotham’s past…

The surprise Marvel one on the list:
Guardians 3000 #1 The Original Guardians of the Galaxy return to their own series.Everything Guardians is hot.
The Small Press Gem of the Week:
The Damnation of Charlie Wormwood– Well received new creator owned project launching from Dynamite.

How far will a man go to save his son? Charlie Wormwood has a pretty normal life – a house, a wife, a job, and a kid. With his son sick, he begins treading a dangerous path to make things right. Teaching in prison gives him many ‘opportunities’ but what problems will he create as he walks into the prison of darkness for his family?

The Pick of the Week:
Masterplasty One Shot This is going to be hard to find. Even though it is a new Image book, it will be way under ordered. It is a tall book with a $6 price tag and a very indie feel to it. People are going to pass it over.

A young man decides to leave his college girlfriend after getting a new medical technique which drastically modifies the physical appearance of the human body in ways both beautiful and hideous. Will changing the outside change what’s within?

Other must pick ups-
God Hates Astronauts #2 Ryan Browne’s hilarious book continues.
Men of Wrath #1 Jason Aaron’s new book from Marvel’s Icon. A must pick up in an already crowded field.
Variants to look for this week:
Critical Hit #1 Francesco Francavilla variant– Limited to just 500 copies. Francavilla is a fan favorite artist that people seek out.
Spider-man 2099 #4- Not a fan of all the Deadpool covers but this one cracks me up. People seek out Deadpool Variants and this one is not the normal, goofy one.
Peter Panzerfaust and Rat Queens connecting variants. Similar in style to how Walking Dead and Manifest Destiny did at SDCC. Find them and buy them.
