Larry's Comics Picks of the week for 10/29/14

Speculation: investment involving high risk but also the possibility of high
profits.
I have always believed that the icing on the cake of comics is the fact that sometimes they are worth money. They’re entertaining and potentially valuable. I’m a reader first, but have always played the market a bit.
I love investing in modern comics, It’s an endeavor I began in 1988 & enjoyed incredible success along with horrific losses. It’s an exciting emotional roller coaster that starts a new ride every Wednesday. It’s one of my favorite things in this world.
Here are my speculator-y picks of the week:
It’s a fabulous week. TON of material with top notch potential.

HARLEY QUINN ANNUAL #1
DC COMICS
(W) Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti (A) John Timms (CA) Amanda Conner
We have to warn you, readers: This issue stinks! Seriously! Like, unpleasant odors are literally in the story! In this first-ever HQ ANNUAL, take a trip to Harley’s home of Coney Island in a groundbreaking “scent-ticular” issue, featuring actual, honest-to-gosh smells. This issue comes polybagged to contain the stench.
WHY take a chance?
First time gimmicks = $ in comic market.
The scratch & sniff “scent-ticular” is so goofy, it’s going to draw crowds, throw in a little cannibis this book will have legs.
The US editions that small like marijuana are the covers to get.

SONIC BOOM #1
ARCHIE COMIC PUBLICATIONS
(W) Ian Flynn (A) Evan Stanley, Rick Bryant (CA) Patrick Spaz Spaziante
Here comes the BOOM! Based on the new hit TV and video game comes Sonic Boom, a new ongoing Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series from Archie Comics! Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends are back and ready to do battle with the evil Dr. Eggman and his diabolical death-machines! This ground-breaking new chapter in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise puts a new “spin” on all your favorite heroes and villains – plus new faces and hilarious new stories chock-full of action! Featuring a stunning first issue cover by Sonic art legend Patrick “SPAZ” Spaziante, and 4-part “Here Comes the Boom” collector covers from series artists Evan Stanley, Rick Bryant, and Matt Herms!
WHY take a chance?
This book is a classic Dual Collectible: multiple groups competing for an item , for hobby, display, or as an investment.
I’m a sucker for these. If it looks like solid material, I’m a buyer.
Monster video game following here. Huge.
The trusted marketplace for video game tie in comics for the general public is Amazon.
These type of books sell for multiples of Ebay prices on Amazon. If you are selling your video game related comics on Ebay instead of Amazon, you’re doing it wrong.
Give it a try.

  1. Besides Harley Quinn annual #1, wasn’t perfume gimmick attempted before but not for such a popular character? Beavis Butthead comic?

    1. Yeah, it’s far from a new gimmick. The first Ren & Stimpy from Marvel way back in 1992 was a poly bag scratch and sniff issue that came w a free “air fowler”. The new gimmick is making a comic smell like weed, I guess…

  2. That is ridiculous they would put marijuana smell in. This is for kids also, should be left out.
I can only imagine who green lighted that. But I’ll have to bite my tongue.

  3. I think everyone is over reacting over the marijuana smell thing. Sad to say, but comics are marketed at 40 year old guys. This isn’t a newsstand comic, like we had when we were kids sitting on the shelf at the local grocery store.
And, no, I don’t smoke pot.

    1. I am more offended by the price. I dont smoke pot either but think i could score the smell in a comic for cheaper than $5.99. It is still a great pick. It wasnt shipped to certain countries over seas so there is an excellent opportunity to flip it. Unless customs gets involved.
