Each week hundreds of new comics hit the stands, most with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones that we think have the best chance of heating up. Here are our picks of the week for 12/24/14:
The Pick of the Week:
They’re Not Like Us #1 New Image Series (yeah I know) from the guys behind Nowhere Men. Looks great. I cannot pass up new Image books, especially from creators with track records like Eric Stephenson.
The Other New Image #1
Graveyard Shift #1– I am a big fan of Jay Faerber, thanks to Copperhead. Jay is a fantastic writer. Yes I know this is a mini-series, but I could see it’s blend of crime, horror, and romance being easily translated into other media.
The longshot:
Garbage Pail Kids Comic Puketacular #1– This has several things going for it. Children of the 80’s went nuts for the stickers (yeah, me too). Throwback books like these have done well. Throw in the possible hipsters grabbing it and you have the chance for a sell out and a hit.
The, Now it is time for something different one:
Sunstone Graphic Novel #1 Think about what 50 Shades of Gray did for novels and add that formula to comics. There you go, check this one out.
Two women deal with modern themes of sex, relationships, and fetishism in this erotic romantic comedy. So beware all who enter, because, to quote a few hundred thousand readers on DeviantArt: ‘I’m not into BDSM…but this story…I get it.’
Also, do not pass up these dollar deals if you have not read the originals yet:
Image Firsts: Nailbiter #1– Joshua Williamson’s twisted serial killer book. Can’t say enough good things about Josh’s writing.
Image Firsts: Southern Bastard #1– Jason Aaron’s heartbreaking tale of returning home and trying to clean things up. Such a good book.
That is it for us. Small week I hope for purchases, my wallet could use a break. Let us know what tou are spec-ing on.
Also, Merry Christmas to all! (who celebrate it)
I’m looking forward to “They’re not like us” as well. I wish they’d keep doing Nowhere Men, talk about ending abruptly without closure…. sigh!
I preordered GPK a couple months back. Have been very anxious to get this book and check it out. I still buy the sets of stickers and have a complete run from 1985 to current.
Stephenson talked alot of smack about speculators, the same people who helped make Nowhere Men a success, so I don’t expect to see much secondary market movement on They’re Not Like Us
Some writers goal is to write a story, not to make people selling the comics on the after market money. To each their own I suppose, the writers are entitled to their own opinions just as people who want to speculate can just ignore them and sell their books for profit. 🙂
Midtown is having a HUGE sale right now. 75% off most back issues. I can’t buy em all so I thought I’d spread the word. Merry Christmas to all
I browsed through them all.. if you like GI Joe, JLA, Star Trek and Transformers, then this sale is for you.
