Wednesday open forum

My favorite day of the week. Wednesday. New comic day. Also; open forum day.
Feel free to talk about whatever you like. Give us your pick ups for the week. Let us know what books you dropped this week.
But to get the conversation rolling, I got an email this week asking about opening up a comic shop. I have over 40,000 comics (yes it is a disease I know) and could easily have enough back issues. But have you ever thought of opening up a shop? Yes, I dream of it.

  1. My definite pulls are:
    FBP #17
    Copperhead #5
    Ghosted #16
    Rat Queens #11
    Walking Dead #136
    Captain America #3
    Avengers #40
    Star Wars #1
    Deep State #3
    Terrible Lizard #3
Actually not a busy week unless I cave and pick up a bunch of the Star Wars variants.. which I likely won’t unless I can find them at cover.

    1. Extra pickups:
A few Star Wars variants at cover price, Cover H (Skottie Young), Cover J (Luke Action Figure Cover), Cover N (Sara Pichelli).
While all the nerds were sorting and digging for other Star Wars variants, I quietly noticed the SHIELD variants they had at cover. I nabbed the only two Humberto Ramos covers they had and one of the Welcome Home variants.
Everyone focused on Star Wars also let me sneak off their only variant copy of Adventure Time Marceline Gone Adrift #1 Cover C Incentive Joe Quinones 10 Years Anniversary Virgin Variant Cover at cover price. Seems these Boom variants go unnoticed at times (Over the Garden Wall is a good one).. so I’ve been picking these up if I find them for a small gamble.

    2. Oh, also found a tucked away ASM #4 1st Silk regular cover. I’ve been searching for these as well. It’s an easy $10-$15 book on eBay currently. I think these are gonna heat up once her own series is released.

  2. Star Wars #1. One issue, nothing more.
    Walking Dead #136
    Shutter #8
Spider-Verse #2. Probably 5-10 copies. Video game spidey, punk rock spidey. I really can’t get enough of this spiderverse storyline.
    Captain Marvel #11
    Daredevil #12
Going to go through the back issue and dollar bins as well. I found some awesome old black panther originals in NM for a buck. As well as a first appearance of Ronan for $3 last week in vf condition. Super steals. I’m listing a bunch of stuff on my eBay this week too. Selling to buy issues I want. The compulsion continues.

  3. Rachel Rising volume 5
I decided one copy of Star Wars at cover is to be passed on. Over 100 variants is ridiculous and greedy. I’m passing on it even being a huge Star Wars fan. I’m at the enough is enough point with the absurd amount of variants.

      1. Yes, I trade wait on the majority of books I read. I tend to gravitate towards books that I feel read better that way. The fun books like Rumble I won’t be waiting on, or mini’s like Tim Daniels mini Burning Fields dropping next week. Saga is one I’d like to wait on but don’t have the patience for that one.
Definitely helps the monthly comic fund to trade wait as well as long as you are selective.

    1. Yeah, I ordered the Forbidden Planet Color and B&W just because it’s awesome, but I’ll pick up the regular tomorrow. The only way I’ll pick up more variants is if I get them at cover (at least the ones selling for more than cover for an easy quick flip possibly).
      100 variants is just ridiculous.

  4. Oh and it’s been what, almost a year since the last time Jupiters Legacy #4 hit the shelves and now #5 is upon us, jacked up by $2 even.. so I’m dropping that sucker! You hear me Millar? I’m done with you and your crappy release schedule and pricing schemes!

      1. I thought Starlight ended? Or is he gonna make Duke go on another adventure? I must admit, I did enjoy that one and it helps when it gets released in a timely manner.

  5. I picked up
    Thomas Alsop #8 (of 8)
    Conan-Red Sonja #1
    X #21
    F.B.P. #17
Fables; The Wolf Among Us #1
    Copperhead #5
    Lazarus #14
    The Superannuated Man #5
    Ten Grand #12(last issue)
    The Walking Dead #136
    Brainstorm #5 ( Late)
Empire of The Dead #5 (of 5)
    S.H.I.E.L.D. #2
    Enourmous #5(re-ordered) Excited!!!!!!
    Pre-Ordered Enormous T.P.B. #1 For $7.99(Thank You Anthony)
And Star Wars #1(Regular, Humorous, Action Figure, Movie and Teaser Covers), though I’m not sure how much the variants are gonna set me back because when I called my order in, the guy’s at the shop hadn’t finished pricing them!!!!!!!!Maybe they’ll go easy on me??? Any speculation on the prices would be appreciated!

  6. Star Wars #1 is an amazing read – highly recommended. It is the biggest selling comic in 20 yrs and yet might actually sell out (how is that possible!?!?!) All the variant covers look great as well. If you love the original movie series you will love the new comic. Should you buy into 100 variant covers – well definitely not unless you just love collecting star wars cool things !

    1. I was going to pass on this until my LCS told me the preview copies they recieved were fantastic. I plan on picking up one copy of whatever cover they have tomorrow, just based on their recommendation.

    2. all sold out in Springfield, IL – 70 copies at one shop… probably just as many (or more) at another

  7. Ten Grand (so sad it’s ending)
    Walking Dead
    Deadpool
    Thanos Vs Hulk
Star Wars – Moviestop store in Philly has the Hastings color and sketch variants for $7.99 ea, I was able to reserve 1 of each, also the Skottie Young for cover.
LCS pickups this week: X-Men 142 NM/NM- for $20. Spawn 175 NM for $4.50, Niles & Wrightson’s Frankenstein Alive #1 for a quarter, looking forward to reading it

    1. Ten Grand is still around? I lost interest fast with that one. The art got a little overwhelming and the title stopped being relevant to the story it seemed.

  8. The only copy of Star Wars 1 I am getting is the one I pre-ordered from Beach Ball Comics: the Stan Sakai cover of Yoda caught in the grip of a Darth Vader force-choke.

  9. I enjoyed Squirrel Girl so much from last week I may pick up another copy. Rat Queens is a must. Gotta think about Copperhead; I’m pretty done with it.

      1. I picked up Copperhead for another week with all of the love you guys have shown it. Also picked up Boom Box Mixed Tape. It has a Munchkins preview in it along with Cyanide and Happiness and a LumberJanes story.

  10. Star Wars #1 regular cover, no variants although I am addicted to flipping them.
Spider-verse #2, love me some spiders
    Deadpool #40
    Captain America #3
    Avengers #40
    Batman Eternal #41
    Walking Dead #136…duh

  11. I’ve gotten bored with it and with so many great must get books coming out now: Saga, Rat Queens, Sex Criminals, Squirrel Girl, SIP Kids, Sandman Overture, etc, slow and mediocre isn’t cutting it anymore for me. I love the art in Copperhead, but not much has happened storywise. Shutter will keep me for a issue or two more. I’ll probably cut Princess Ugg as my kid and I like LumberJanes and SIP Kids more. This wil be the last issue of Jupiter’s Children for me too. I cut East of West. Birthright and The Bunker started out very strong but are slowing down.

    1. East of West is only getting better for me. This war brewing is good stuff. It’s all coming together now for me.

  12. This week is a small one for me.
Mortal Kombat X #1 both A&B connecting covers ( always liked mortal kombat have couple of games for my genesis, snes, n64, and my playstation. Can’t get enough)
    New Suicide Squad #6
Star Wars #1 (regular cover)(big fan waiting to see where the adventures will go. I hope that they are as good as dark horse’s where)
Thanos vs. Hulk #2 ( good so far)
Deep State #3 ( good story and has keeped me wanting more so far) (keep up the good work Justin)

    1. Recently, a lot of Avatar books. Coffin Hill from vertigo. I get so many weekly readers it is hard to pin down and most of the time i do not even notice the books when they are gone. Dropped Peter Panzerfaust.

      1. I don’t do Avatar as often but the one thing that bugs me is the limited edition #1 ‘ s they’ll keep releasing months later. Like Caliban (which was decent) wrapped up a few months back but yet here comes more #1 with new covers and limited to 1500 and such….

  13. Anyone pick up the Charlie Hebdo. Yes it’s controversial, and not really comic related, but it kinda is. They are really selling like crazy! It’s like National Flip Day for France.

      1. I’m in the UK and I managed to order yesterday from France for about $15, those copies have now vanished. They got these English editions out Friday that are limited to about 1000 I believe, they are going for around $800. I’m almost tempted to take a day off to hunt it down, but deep down I know I have no chance. I just heard they upped the print to 5 million, so more may start surfacing cheaper.

  14. I have a friend in France, asked him a couple days ago to try to get me a few copies. Hopefully!

      1. With so many variants it seems hard to believe they can all sell over face value. I’ll be curious to see how many copies of #1 (regular or variant covers) are left on store shelves after a few weeks.

        1. Have to consider though, people who don’t usually collect comics but are die hard Star Wars fans will be coming out of the cracks to get these for themselves as well. Most of the shops in my area are all have Star Wars release parties tonight.
There’ll be some left in a few weeks cause every shop had stacks and stacks of these but as many as there will be, these will dry up eventually.

      2. My brother who is the biggest Star Wars nerd I know said he wasn’t going to be collecting these. I was shocked. This was coming from the guy who slept at the movie theater for several days for the release of one the later films.

        1. Just all depends I suppose on the collector. I saw some people that I’ve never seen at the shops this morning getting Star Wars copies and nothing else.
I mean, honestly, this new series is nothing new. Dark Horse just finished up their own series of the storyline that took place after the “New Hope” movie script that Brian Wood wrote and it was an awesome read along with great artwork. In fact, I think it was issues 13 and 14 when it focused on Darth Vader was some awesome reading. Those were my two favorite issues out of the full series. I’m actually looking foward to the new Darth Vader series coming, I might enjoy it more than this new Star Wars series if it’s done right. 🙂

      3. I didn’t stick around to long but my comic shop was certainly busier than usual. I’m guessing Star Wars had a lot to do with that. It was a good issue and I was pleasantly surprised. I’ll probably have to pick up Vader now. I do not care at all for the art in Leia. I’ll pass on that one I think.

        1. I pay for the Marvel Unlimited. It’ll show up 6 months later for me to check out most likely. 🙂

      4. I really don’t read anything else Marvel so I’ve never looked into unlimited. It might prove useful when I’m reading comics to my kids. Or if the Icon stuff is up there….I’d find that really appealing.

        1. It’s great to read all the titles you don’t want to spend money on each week or month, then binge read when they release 6-10 issues a year later after release. The other perk is back issues, great for reading the old stuff or using as reference.

  15. Why do I like my LCS???
Walked in today and there were 12 Star Wars regular covers and that was it.
    Picked up:
    Star Wars
    Ghosted
    Copperhead
    Walking Dead
    Rai
    Deep State
Also found out they don’t put the display variants out until the regs are sold, so I picked up several Rumble, Bitch Planets and Tooth and Claw. Plus they were 50 percent off. ?

    1. “Walked in today and there were 12 Star Wars regular covers and that was it.”
That’s because all the others ordered are all listed on eBay for a premium now! 😉

  16. Star Wars #1
    Avengers #40
    Rat Queens special
    All-new Captain America #3
    TWD #136
    Fables Wolf Among Us #1
I will say that if they keep publishing comics with back cover that are 90% black ink (Wytches, Marvel Books) you might force me to go digital. Nothing sucks more then black smudges on my book and fingers!

    1. Sadly, black ink is cheaper than color ink. Printing an entire back page black is likely cutting costs than to print more color pictures or another solid color on the back, etc.

      1. Also makes for a tougher 9.8 candidate due to the dreadful finger prints. Which in turn pushes the value up on several books due to the scarcity of high grades. I like black.

      1. That’s why I buy a reading copy and then the copy I just leave bagged. Well, at least for the comics I think will hold value or become more valuable over time. I like putting my greasy fingers on everything too much.. 😉

      2. When i’m in the store I go and grab a bagged and boarded book and use it like a food tray so that while i’m looking my hands aren’t getting clammy and printing up the back of whatever book I have on the bottom of the stack.

  17. I totally miffed my post from last week. And now i’ve forgotten what I had picked up last week. Oh well. Time for this week! Pretty average week for me numbers wise. Did a good amount of back issue hunting as well. Here it goes.
    Walking Dead #136
    Spider-verse #2
    Deep State #3
Star Wars #1 Blank Cover (picked up the ComicXposure Boba Variants but I always like having blanks on hand)
    Batgirl #38 Blank Cover
    Hexed #6
    Teen Dog #5
    Suicide Squad #6
    World’s Finest #30
    Rat Queens Braga Special
    Copperhead #5
    Ghost Rider #10
    Amazing X-Men #15
    Back Issue pickups:
    Action Comics #835
    Black Panther #2
    Powerman and Iron Fist #54
    Teen Titans Annual #2
    JL Dark #1 and #9
    Marvel Team Up #95
    Flash Annual #2
Fantastic Four vs. X-Men full set
Hope everyone else found what they were looking for this week!

  18. wow, star wars was hot yesterday. I only picked up a regular and a blank cover, but my LCS had blown through nearly all their regular covers and most of their variants at $8 per. crazy love for star wars, I guess we’ll see how much drop their is from issue #1 to #2.

    1. You almost always see a huge drop off from number 1’s. I’m curious also. With all the variants and the usual collectors buying their copies, i’m sure the numbers were bloated. It is Star Wars though, so maybe the drop off won’t be so large? It will be fun seeing the numbers for issue #2.

  19. So Diamond is offering a huge discount to retailers who will order as many #2 issues as they did of #1. I doubt many retailers will attempt that craziness but I figured what the heck as I played it super safe on #1. In fact I have decided to order twice as many Darth Vader #1 as I did of Star Wars #1. and to top that off I might order 400% more Spider-Gwen #1 – we’ll see ! Star Wars #1 is a really great read and hard to believe a million copies have sold out and already 2nd printing on the way.
