Wednesday Open Forum

The best day of the week. It’s like your birthday smack in the middle of the week. New Comic Book Day!
Talk about whatever you want tell us your pick ups, books you dropped, books snatched off the shelf, and ones lingering.
Wednesday
Also, what do you think about Image upping their print runs? They tried this before, and went back to doing smaller print runs with reprints.

  1. Looks like Invincible Iron Man # 25 is 1st app. Bleeding edge armor and is going to be in Age of Ultron…any thoughts on this book popping??

  2. No delays this week.. all is good in the world again!
    My definite pulls are:
FBP #19 (I keep finding reasons to stop reading this one but then find myself wanting to read more)
Casanova #2 (Fraction, must see where this is going… )
East of West #18 (Must read, don’t care what anyone says, things are getting more interesting with this one)
Ghosted #18 (Like Five Ghosts, just a fun read)
Sheltered #15 (I totally forgot last issue wasn’t finale, but maybe the nutso kids were right all along?)
Sidekick #10 (This is good, I swear. It has cheese factor with it but it also got dark and interesting)
    Walking Dead #138 (Duh!)
Postal #2 (Loved the first issue, gotta keep reading hoping it keeps up the good momentum)
ASM #16 (It’s Spider-Man, my child hood favorite)
Fantastic Four #644 (Pay attention to these folks if you want to know what might happen in Secret Wars)
Howard The Duck #1 (Everyone from the 80s is gonna pick this one up. Expect a big print run, hopefully Chip does a job well done, but I don’t expect this one to be any type of buy and flip)
New Avengers #31 (All leading up to Secret Wars… )
Spider-Gwen #2 (Umm.. okay.. I’m still up in the air about the story but gonna give it a few more chances most likely)
Star Wars #3 (Duh, it’s Aaron and Star Wars)
Thor #6 (It’s slow character building and I want to know more about the new Thor lady!)
Big Trouble Little China #9 (Such a good laugh)

      1. I watched the Third Eye Pick Three with Chip Zdarsky and Jim Zub as guests and Chip Zdarsky is a crazy funny dude, had me in stitches! If you haven’t seen it…I highly recommend watching it, it’s 5 or 6 minutes long!!!!

and more than likely more once I walk through those doors.

    1. Also picked up Sandman 22 and 26 for fairly cheap and my New Mutants 98, Detective Comics 118 and ASM 129 came back from CGC. So nice surprise!

  4. FF 644
    Spider-Gwen 2
    Ms Marvel 13 + Variant
    Thor 6 + Variant
    TWD 138
    Southern Cross 1
    Detective Comics Endgame One Shot
But my list never stops at what I think it will be.

      1. Most weeks I say to my wife “It’s going to be a pretty cheap week, not too much I’m reading”… and then I walk out of the store with 2-3 other new books and a stack of back issues….. So goes the hobby

          1. I ordered some off Midtown last week.. they were having a 40% off sale of recent current issues. I loaded up on some Garfield and Spongebob for the kids.. best time to buy when they’re almost half off. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. I’m about to head to the shops, but this is what’s on my list:
    All-New X-Men #37
    Amazing Spider-Man #16
Amazing Spider-Man Special #1 (we’ll see on this one)
    Ant-Man #3
Batman Arkham Knight #1 (only if I can find the variant cheap)
    Captain Marvel #13
    Deadpool #43
Detective Comics Endgame #1 (another one that I may or may not pick up)
Fantastic Four #644 (I have all the variants for this one pulled)
    Green Lantern Corps #40
    Guardians Team-up #2 (maybe)
    Howard the Duck #1 (maybe)
    New Avengers #31
    New Suicide Squad #8
    Spider-Gwen #2 (regular + variant)
    Star Wars #3
    Thor #6
    Wolverines #10
We’ll see what I pick up and what I leave behind!

    1. Only passed on Howard the Duck. I figure there will be enough copies out there to find one if I really want one later.

  6. I thought it would be fun to start joining in with this. I’m the other side of the pond so i’m out buying comics while you guys are still tucked up in bed!
    Turned out to be a bigger week for me than I was expecting, but fairly normal volume-wise;
Batman Arkham Knight – game variant and 1:25 (1:25 looks a good flip).
southern cross – big bang variant
    ladykiller 2 – 2nd print
    ladykiller 1 – 2nd print
    Spider gwen 2 – reg and 1:25
fantastic four – both reg covers
Detective comics end game 1 shot
star wars 3 – reg and action figure
    postal 2
    hellbreak 1
Also got a signed copy of The Sculptor (#24of1000) not expecting to ever make any money of that, even if it gets filmed, just a nice thing to have.
The Spider-Gwen 1:25 is going for big money already on eBay over here, one went for ยฃ30, so $50ish dollars. Way more than issue 1 1:25 was going for.. It’s a much nicer cover, might hold it for a bit and see what it does.
Also had right touch yesterday, found 7 Inhuman #12 Noto’s, think they got here late to the UK.

  7. Postal #2 I loved the first issue.
Star Wars #3 I read Star Wars to the kids. Makes for a good comic bonding time.
I missed Plunder a couple of weeks ago. I’m told I should be getting that one this week.
I might pick up Southern Cross. I’ve been going back and forth but I think I’m going to pass.
Speaking of Image print runs. I’m for one thankful because getting Image number ones can be a pain sometimes. I’m not a flipper so i’m speaking strictly from a fan point of view.

  8. Walking Dead #138 spec. new bad guy revealed(1st appearance) + awesome cover = Buy now

      1. Yup..
Spoiler Alert: Carl didn’t die but he might be on a path I hope that leads him to dying.. stupid kid!

          1. Things are building back up to some more action for sure.. hopefully! And Carl is gonna do something stupid!

              1. That’s why Kirkman just needs to do away with him already.. that hole in his face still bugs me!

      2. Just read it. 1st appearance would be 132, I would think. 138 is the ‘unmasking’ and addition of a name. Things for the speculator to think about…
In other trivia, 132 was also the Loot Crate issue.

      3. Issue 132? You talking about the Whisperers or Lydia or the new Character, spoiler alert Alpha, Lydia’s mother? Whisperers first appeared or credited in issue 130. Lydia first appeared in 133 but we didn’t know her name until 135. 138 is declared first appearance for Alpha.

      4. The last page of 132 is clearly Alpha holding the double barrel shotgun taking the one of the hostages she exchanges for Lydia.

    1. The significance of issue 132 is they discovered the whisperers are actually people in zombie skins, not actual zombies who can talk.

      1. Just looked at 132, 133 and 138. There is only one Whisperer that I can find that has a gun, much less a double barrel shot gun. And seeing how so many WD are known by their weapons, I’m assuming it’s the same person. However, the clothes are different colors. Do Whisperers change clothes?

        1. Yeah, could be any one of the whisperers though. I’d imagine they are wearing zombie skin, they’re not changing their clothes that often. I’m just basing my info off the Walking Dead official wiki, they claim 138 is Alpha’s first appearance.
According to 138, there are possibly hundreds or more Whisperers out there so the chance they are carrying the same weapon is very likely I would imagine.

        2. I guess the only way to really confirm is to have Charlie or Robert confirm though. The clothes not only changed but sort of changed drastically, in 138 as she’s walking away, looks like she’s wearing a dark tank top over her dark shirt from the back. It’s clearly a white shirt in 132. Plus under the mask her skin looks darker in 132 compared to 138. Could just be the artwork difference (they make goofs all the time, I mean Rick has a hand in issues where he shouldn’t).. but if it is her in 132, it’s a cameo for sure. 1st full with name reveal would be 138.

        3. Okay, dug out my copies as well, mostly 133 and it seems the whisperer carrying the shotgun is drawn as if it’s a man, not a woman at least from the looks of it in some of the panes, but definitely different clothes.

      2. I find it fascinating you would consider 133 Lydia’s first appearance but 132 couldn’t be Alpha’s. 134 is the first time one can even distinguish which one Lydia is.
As for the clothes, as the leader of a group like this, I would probably change my clothes when meeting a new group and wanted that group to know I was the leader.
Comes down to the shotgun, I think. If you never see another whisperer with one, I think 132 could be considered her. Plus, in 133 this person talks like they are the leader of the Whisperers… At least, that’s what I got when I first read that issue months ago. Who knows? It’s why it’s called speculating.
Also, I can point you to hundreds of incorrect items in the wikis. I’m not sure they’re the best source for info on modern books.

        1. Well, without confirmation since the clothes are different and the art work seems to depict a man in my opinion, that’s why I claim 132 is an unknown until confirmation.
They captured Lydia so that pretty much confirms it was her in 133 me thinks since they attacked Paul in 133, he captures her in 134 after killing most of them that surrounded him, they find out her name in 135 after he brought her back with him.
Oh and I sent a letter to the letter hacks, hopefully they clear it up for us. ๐Ÿ˜‰

        2. And if it is confirmed to be Alpha in 132, I still think 138 will be more significant. Take a look at Paul’s first appearance. Full page artwork of him looking through binoculars in issue 91 but everyone considers 92 the key 1st appearance, higher value.
I’m not trying to argue, I just need more facts, but that’s the fun of it as well. There’s just as many things that say it’s not her compared to that it is her. The only thing we really got going is the shotgun.

  9. I had no idea there was going to be a Bill and Ted’s Most Triumphant Return Rob! variant cover? Anyone know anything about this one? One shop had two available, another had just 1 available. Midtown doesn’t even have them listed. Graham’s lists them as a 1:10 variant. All I know is, Rob! rules… and Bill and Ted were cool too but Rob! rules. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I have no real info, but yes Rob! rules!! I have ALL of his comics, covers, variants…I couldnt find this anywhere yesterday, all I could see was that it was 10k variant?? I wasnt expecting my regular store to have any, and they had two. I’ve seen it listed around as 1:10 hidden variant…

      1. I grabbed both copies at one shop and the single issue available at another. I wasn’t even planning on grabbing Bill and Ted’s.. I just love Rob! as well. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. this weeks pick ups:
    Amazing Spider-man 16
ant-man 3 – funniest marvel comic out right now
    deadpool 43
fantastic four 644 (maybe, I jumped in this in the middle, so I may only get the connecting variant to have all 4)
howard the duck 1- hoping for similar style to ant-man and superior iron man
new avengers ( does anyone even try to pretend anymore that avengers and new avengers aren’t just one bi-monthly book?)
    spider-gwen 2
    superior iron-man 6
thor 6 (maybe, really just want to get to issue 8 to find out who she is)
    wolverines 10
    walking dead 138
    back issues:
looking for east of west 8 (just started from beginning, really like it so far)

they’re not like us 2 (just read first issue cause I was bored, shocked how much I liked it)
Harley Quinn 3 (found the first 2 for cheap, so figured id continue to see what all the hype is about)

    1. Rat Queens are hard to come by for the back issues. Most it seems are ordering just enough. #1 had the highest print run for sure.
They’re Not Like Us I am enjoying as well. Same writer for Nowhere Men.. I just hope he doesn’t suddenly quit after issue 6 and sort of leave us hanging..

  11. After I left my LCS, I took a side trip to Books a Million. I was really surprised, last time I went there looking for comics, lets just say they were not that collector friendly the books were read through and in bad shape. Now the majority of them are bagged and boarded. I will be going by more often after today. Here is a small sample of what I got there.
    Silk #1
    FF #642
Desender #1 BAM var. they still had a lot of these left, already ordered 3 online so I did not get anymore.

    Southern Cross #1
    Star Wars #3
Star Wars #3 action figure variant
    Thor #6
    Surface #1
    Walking Dead #138

      1. Yeah, I thought it was great. Story seems more original too, none of the usual with a slight twist going on..

  13. I won’t receive Postal #2 from DCBS for a couple weeks but I really enjoyed the first issue. I usually don’t like Top Cow books but this one might have legs. Good to see people talking about it.

  14. Abe Sapien 21I

    The Surface – cover b and c
    Vampirella 10 – Mayhew cover
    Walking Dead 138
X 23 – I’ve really enjoyed this book. Can’t believe Dark Horse is ending it (again)

  15. I’ve got a question for the brains trust on here, and I hope I’m not over stepping any boundaries…
I missed Enormous first time round, I didn’t even see it anywhere over here in the uk. However I have since spent a goodly amount of money on #1A, #1B and #1 phantom. I’m considering laying a further large amount ‘o cash on a #1 NYCC variant, possibly as much as $450 including shipping from the US. Is this too much of a gamble, what price would you guys consider a reasonable risk for this book, at this time?
*And yes i’m gutted I didn’t find it at the time*!
I hope I’m not over stepping the mark with this question, if so I can only apologise.

    1. I sold a raw copy for $250 a couple of weeks ago. Are you buying graded or raw. There were 106 copies made. I have 1. Had 5. They are hard to come by and don’t come up for sale much.
      Sent from my iPhone
      >

  16. Raw. On eBay for $379 or buy it now. Customs would prob run an additional $80 on that. It”s a heck of a lot of cash, on somewhat of a speculation I guess. As you say they don’t come up often and in the UK, never. At all.
I believe it could become a $1000+ book, however its a lot of money to lay down…. I could cover it, but it would be the most i’ve ever sent on a single issue.

    1. I can say I regret selling every copy of enormous I have sold. I still have a complete set plus but if I could go back and not sell them. There are more interested buyers on the NYCC variant them there are sellers. It won’t come easy and with the prices creeping up, cheap either. Is there a best offer option on it?

  17. Yeah, I’ve entered one at around $310. Waiting to hear. I’d be made up at that price. I guess, even if the tv show doesn’t happen it will still retain value.

  18. So I should bite the bullet I guess. I’d say, in terms of a sure shot, this one is pretty much up there…

    1. 106 copies made. They will not print another. Many already in hand of collectors who will not sell them. I kick myself for selling complete sets of 1-4 including the NYCC variant for $215 a set.

      >

  19. Ok, he accepted $325. It’s gonna run me $420. I need a lay down!!!! Tony, I thank you for your advice, very much. Top man. I’m sure I won’t regret it.
One last thing CGC or CBCS for grading?

    1. I use CBCS due to the price and speed. Plus I am a signature witness for them. However, CGC still commands slightly higher prices. If you slab it and it comes back a 9.8 you would already have made money on it. Have not seen any sell at a lower grade.
