A look ahead to small press books

What’s Up CHU? Mel the Movie guy here. I’m looking at some upcoming books and thought I’d share what I think would be some good books to pick up in the summer months, whether it be for good reads or just for spec.
Let’s Start with Strange Fruit #1 Boom Studios
STK672708
“It’s 1927 in the town of Chatterlee, Mississippi, drowned by heavy rains,” reads the book’s description (via CBR). “The Mississippi River is rising, threatening to break open not only the levees, but also the racial and social divisions of this former plantation town.
“A fiery messenger from the skies heralds the appearance of a being, one that will rip open the tensions in Chatterlee. Saviour, or threat? It depends on where you stand. All the while, the waters are still rapidly rising.
“Two of the industry’s most respected and prolific creators come together for the first time in a deeply personal passion project.” A very interesting take on racism back in the 1920’s with a supernatural/superhero spin on things, the art is absolutely beautiful
2) 21st Century Tank Girl– Titan. This one is already getting a bit of buzz within speculator circles and had a successful Kickstarter campaign.

After a break of 20 years, artist extraordinaire Jamie Hewlett (GORILLAZ) is leaping back on the Tank Girl wagon, re-teaming with series co-creator Alan Martin to bring you a whole new take on the foul-mouthed, gun toting, swill-swigging hellion!
Featuring riotous 100% original content from Hewlett & Martin along with contributions from a host of series stalwarts and newcomers, get your head down, put your hands over your private parts, and prepare for a chaotic collection of strips, pin-ups, and random carnage! 21st Century Tank Girl #1 comes with 2 covers to collect!
3) Famous Monsters Presents Gun Suits #1
Gunsuits_01_CVRB
From a script by Eisner winner Paul Tobin (COLDER, PROMETHEUS), GUNSUITS is a whirlwind ride of mechs, monsters, and alternate universes, adapted from the short story “Wormholes”. The story follows
Cassandra “Potts” Potter as she battles gigantic, scaly bio-weapons and simultaneously searches every
available dimension for a way to win. “I always try to keep in mind that heroes [like Potts] are regular
people,” says Tobin. “They’ve been forced into a situation, but ‘Serve justice!’ isn’t what’s paramount in
a hero’s mind. It’s more ‘don’t get shot or eaten’ and ‘don’t let my friends get shot or eaten’.” Both are
distinct possibilities in GUNSUITS when Potts is introduced to a group of soldiers called The Tombstones and tensions begin to run high. Sounds like Enormous meets Gundam should be a fun ride
4) Minions #1 from Titan
minions-cover-687e1
Titan Comics have announced they’ll be publishing an all-new Minions comic this summer, starring the usually servile but often rebellious characters that sprang to fame after their debut in Despicable Me.
The new comic (and digests) will launch in June, shortly before with the launch of Universal’s Minions movie in cinemas on 26th June in the UK and 10th July in the US. Titan comics usually have small print run, and Minions are super popular with the kiddies .so defiantly keep an eye out for this one
5) Transference– Black Mask Studios Black Mask has been on fire as of late, based on the synopsis of this book, it looks like this will continue
Transference_Salas-cover_600px
Description:
Colton Moss and his elite team of special agents run counter-terrorism operations utilizing a secret form of time travel technology called “transference,” which enables them to send their consciousness’s back in time – but, when Colton’s past is altered to reshape his life in the present, he discovers this technology isn’t as exclusive as he thought. Now Colton must prevent a large-scale insurgency in the U.S. – and do so in the transference-past, where a terrorist’s consciousness could be in any body, so everybody is a potential suspect. Fresh off the white-hot ROCHE LIMIT and a string of highly regarded genre books, Morenci’s sci-action thriller mixes smart storytelling with intriguing twists while Salas’ sharp and stylish renderings portray a range of eras as well as characters that may be lurking below the surface… much farther down than skin deep.
6) The Gun– Creature Entertainment
APR151313
Creature Entertainment is definitely a company to keep your eye out for in 2015 and beyond I love the premise for this one, reminds me of that Nas Song I gave you power(for all you hip hop fans out there.)
The Gun is a series that revolves around the effect that a mysterious handgun, forged almost a century ago, has on the lives of the people who briefly possess it, as it passes from hand to hand. The first issue is the story of a middle-aged struggling writer who, at the end of his rope, gets a new lease on life when he purchases a gun at a pawnshop. His life is suddenly worth living again, until it’s not.
That Concludes part 1 of up and coming comics, I will try to do this more if all dig this feature
