George Romero has long been considered the father of the modern zombie genre. His Night of the Living Dead has spawned a ton of sequels as well as homages and imitators. His comic, Empire of the Dead, was done as the sequel that couldn’t be filmed as it would be too expensive. Well, hold on, because now it seems that Empire of the Dead will be adapted as a TV show.
Variety.com reported that the Romero announcement came out of Cannes film festival on Thursday.
Demarest, which backed “A Most Wanted Man” and Kevin Smith’s “Tusk,” is developing a TV adaptation of George A. Romero’s “Empire of the Dead,” a 15-issue graphic novel published by Marvel Comics.
The production-finance company made the announcement Thursday at Cannes.
The series will be written by Romero and longtime partner Peter Grunwald, and executive produced by Romero and Grunwald with Demarest’s Sam Englebardt and William D. Johnson.
Romero’s iconic 1968 film “Night of the Living Dead” conceived the idea of a zombie apocalypse. “Empire of the Dead” mixes in vampires with zombies.
I enjoyed reading this series. I only read act 1 and 2. The book has great art and the zombie fights are epic. Looking forward to this if it does become a TV show.
Retailslayer.Com has Act 1 #1-5 as a set for 16.99 or cover for individuals. Just thought I’d add that in for my fellow flippers.
Thanks for the tip.

With Romero, I thought this will eventually be on TV in some format in the future…even if this one doesnt happen. Could Marvel get involved, since they published the book?
Thank God, I couldn’t give away my complete run of series 1. This comic is all kinds of poorly written. I’m thrilled if it can find a new home that will love it until the show releases and people realize how ridiculous, even in a genre where suspension of disbelief is the norm, the concept behind this book was.
You know what baffles me ? This zombie trend has been going strong for 13 years….WTF!!!
I think the bubble is about to burst…
Depends. There were some great zombie books even before walking dead. Dead world and the Night of the living dead stuff comes to mind.

Man, I’d forgotten about Dead World!
It was such a good book and has had recent spin offs. Plus there has been talks of a movie for a long time. Not to mention the first Crow was in an ad in Dead World 10 I believe (need to double check it).
