One to Watch: Paper Girls #1 by Brian k. Vaughn

Here is one for you. Paper Girls #1 is selling out in pre-orders everywhere. Partially because of Brian k. Vaughn being attached (ok, mostly).
Signs are pointing to this being a big selling, possibly hard to find book.

Image, for a good while, was the spec darling company. Shops were not ordering as many books, Image was cutting down on their over prints, and people could not find the books in shops. Then retailers caught on and started ordering massive quantities of Image titles. That has slowed down as people are not going “all-in” on Image books the way they used to. Now that does not mean this book will not have a large print run, as it is BKV it probably will. However, Paper Girls #1 is most likely going to sell out at Diamond before the book ships, and will sell out on-line and in stores shortly after the books go on sale.

Also, intrinsically, it is a double sized first issue for $2.99, which means more bang for the buck.

SAGA writer BRIAN K. VAUGHAN launches a brand-new ONGOING SERIES with superstar Wonder Woman artist CLIFF CHIANG! In the early hours after Halloween of 1988, four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls uncover the most important story of all time. Stand By Me meets War of the Worlds in this mysterious young adult adventure, starting with a spectacular DOUBLE-SIZED FIRST ISSUE for the regular price of just $2.99!

  1. Seeing that you can still get We Stand On Guard # 1 for cover price, I don’t think this comic will be hard to find. BKV + large print run + LCS ordering heavy = easy to find.

    1. It won’t be hard to find at first but since it’s an ongoing, it will be more appealing to readers who pick it up later down the road. I don’t think it’s going to be a flip right away book but definitely carries potential months or years from now.

    2. BKV has also left the door open for more story inside the We Stand On Guard universe. He has come close to saying it will continue into something else, without coming right out and saying it. The solicits still call it a mini (EX: Issue #6: “The smash-hit miniseries reaches its epic FINAL ISSUE with explosive battles and shocking revelations… but how will things end for the Great White North?”), but BKV has spoken in interviews about Skroce and him wanting to continue work together. In-universe? New property? Who knows.

I’d say at cover price, WSOG is a keeper for a couple months/years. Same with Paper Girls, except to a greater extent. This is solicited as an ongoing from the get-go.

      1. I’d agree completely. I’d love to see WSOG expanded or perhaps come back in another series, ongoing or new type of arc, etc.

  2. Yes yes yes. I can’t wait for this one. I ordered couple of copies from my new comic shop since I dropped my other one. Hopefully I get what I ordered and not get allocated like I did with the other comic store.

    1. Allocating is a problem. I go to a smaller shop and seems like they’re always getting shorted. I don’t get it since Diamond is supposed to print to order……somehow those larger shops always get what they need.

  3. Haven’t seen an Image book sell out for a long time – not since they changed their print run numbers to prevent having to go back for 2nd & 3rd prints

    1. Sadly yes. Who watches or reads the main stream news anyways? The only news one needs is what new comic books are coming out. All the main stream news is just sad negative stories… with a ton of political mud slinging. Your not missing much by skipping the news and you might just live a little bit longer by not paying attention to it. 😉

    1. BKV is not known to let his readers down though. Some enjoy vanilla, some like chocolate.. and then some even like strawberry.
