Terry Hoknes puts a lot of time in analyzing comics. This is a small piece of a bigger article that I will be breaking up and posting. Here is a look at DC sales from December.
Big boom for DC and Batman with 3 of the top 5 comics of the month.
Once again proving no character sells like Batman does!
Batman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 has possibly the largest print run of any TMNT comic in history.
Harley Quinn polybag variants from DC was also a big gimmick that worked well over 10 titles.
Batman 47 127,000 sold out at diamond (106,000 last month)
Harleys Little Black Book 1 92,000 sold out at diamond
Justice League 47 84,000 (75,000 last month)
Harley Quinn 23 69,000 (58,000 last month)
Justice League 6 55,000 (52,000 last month)
Superman 47 47,000 (41,000 last month)
Green Lantern 47 45,000 (38,000 last month)
Flash 47 42,000 (36,000 last month)
Wonder Woman 47 40,000 (34,000 last month)
Green Arrow 47 30,000 (24,000 last month)
Green Arrow Harley Quinn variants are easily the scarcest of the batch of 30 Harley covers.
Sales seem to improve about 9% across all the titles due to the polybags
However overall this is not a very drastic increase and surely the bags were more than 1/5 of the entire sales of each title otherwise these polybag editions are quite scarce since the chances of getting each variant is only 1 in 3. So for example if 10,000 bags of Green Arrow were sold then that’s only 3,333 copies of each of the 3 variants making this not rare but a fairly scarce comic for all the hype it received.
DC – new series and any sales noteworthy.
Robin War 1 $4.99 DC 45,058
Batman 66 Meets The Man From Uncle 1 $2.99 DC 17,363
Lucifer 1 $3.99 DC 17,306
Batman 66 30 $2.99 DC 14,000
Sheriff of Babylon 1 $3.99 DC 10,234
Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman 17 $3.99 DC 9,138
New Romancer 1 $3.99 DC 8,639
Last Gang In Town 1 $3.99 DC 8,396
Unfollow 2 $3.99 DC 7,082
The majority of the DC Vertigo series are all under 9,000 copies each.
Unfollow #2 sold out and has a new printing and a potential TV show in the works.
Sensation Comics #17 is the poorest selling DC mainstream superhero book.
Some Batman related titles are selling under 20,000 copies.

Sad to hear that all of DC’s new Vertigo titles are under 9,000. I’m liking Art Ops, Unfollow, & Survivor’s Club. I am still picking up Clean Room because I love Gail Simone, but still not sure about it long-term. I liked New Romancer#1, but haven’t picked up the other issues yet; and I have all of Red Thorn so far but haven’t had a chance to read them. I don’t like getting attached to doomed books, so I hope that’s not where this is headed, lol.
I was actually liking Tim Seeley’s Effigy, and right before the Vertigo Reboot, it vanished without a trace. The book itself advertised in #6 that it was one of Vertigo’s best-selling acclaimed titles (even though I knew the sales numbers said otherwise), and implied further storylines moving forward, with tons of open plot-threads… then #7 was a stand-alone side-story about one of the supporting cast characters… with no implication that the book was over or had been cancelled… and then it was just gone. I’ve seen no comment from Seeley or DC about it; and I actually wrote to DC twice asking about it, and of course got no response.
