Big Gems from Small Press February Edition

What’s up CHU? Mel V here with the latest edition of Big Gems from the Small Press. It is about to be the start of Comic Convention season for me starting this weekend with Mike Carbo’s Big Apple Con. Be sure to check out the review, also still thinking about hitting up C2E2. That will be a game time decision.
Before we get started I want to give a shout out to 2 great comic shops here in the NYC area who have been super nice and super helpful to me. First up, Best Comics International located at 1300 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park, super nice staff and they know their stuff check them out if you are in the area, also the legendary Roger from Mysterious Time Machine 418 Avenue of the Americas, New York, best place for back issues in the city bar none. Alright let’s get to the Gems…

These books in the edition will be released in May, The cutoff date for these books is 3/22
Power Rangers Pink
POWER RANGERS PINK #1
Manufacturer/Publisher: BOOM! Studios (Release Date: 5/18/2016)
Description
(Wr) Brendan Fletcher, Kelly Thompson (A) Daniele Di Nicuolo (CA) Elsa Charretier
What’s to Love: We’re so thrilled by the response to our Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic series that we wanted to focus on some of the individual Rangers and let them shine in their own stories. First up is a series centered on Kimberly Hart, the Mighty Morphin Pink Ranger, and who better than Batgirl and Gotham Academy writer Brenden Fletcher and A-Force and Jem and the Holograms writer Kelly Thompson to bring it to us! What It Is: Kimberly has retired from the Power Rangers to pursue life as a professional gymnast, but Zordon calls her back for one last mission to defend a mountainside where a long-resting, ancient, evil Zord lies dormant. To get back into the action-and, for the first time, lead her own team-Kimberly has to dust off the rust, plus create a practical, handmade outfit in the process!
Why I like it: Power Ranger fans have spoken, these books from Boom are a certified hit, Fans of the TV series will come out in droves to get this book, and Print run should be higher than Issue #0 for this Spin off. Definitely worth a buy
weavers
WEAVERS #1
Manufacturer/Publisher: BOOM! Studios (Release Date: 5/4/2016)
Description
(Wr) Simon Spurrier (A/CA) Dylan Burnett
What’s to Love: From The Godfather to The Sopranos, organized crime stories have always fascinated us. Weavers is a macabre story with a twist on the familiar drama of dons, capos, and made men, mixing in supernatural elements that only writer Simon Spurrier (The Spire, Cry Havoc) can think up. It’s perfect for fans of Day Men or Scalped! What It Is: Sid, a young man with nothing going for himself, becomes an unlikely new addition to The Weavers, a brutal, East Coast crime family whose members are bound to loyalty thanks to the supernatural spider inside each one of them, granting them powerful-and often grotesque-abilities. Once he realizes what he’s capable of, Sid sets out to pursue his own secret agenda, counter to the group’s objectives. But he doesn’t have much time-the longer the spider is inside him, the more loyal he becomes to The Weavers…
Item #: 1523552 • Diamond code: MAR161176 • UPC: 84428400530200111
Why I like It: Well how’s this for a fresh and new idea, this one has media deal written all over it. Should be a great read Spurrier did a great job on The Spire and Cry Havoc and has been knocking it out of the park, an absolute grab for the PC .
america1
AMERICA #1
Manufacturer/Publisher: Overground Comics (Release Date: 5/4/2016)
Description
(Wr) Jon Hughes (A/CA) Jason Pearson
Formerly an invincible superhero, America loses her powers mysteriously. Unwilling to cease her dangerous crime fighting antics, America finds herself addicted to the returning sensation of pain.
Item #: 1523235 • Diamond code: MAR161621 • ISBN: 9781942519232
Why I like it: Overground has been putting out some amazing books, as I said before this company is definitely one to watch in 2016…the premise of this book sounds entertaining and a new female lead in the world of comics could make this a tremendous sleeper
Legend
LEGEND #1
Manufacturer/Publisher: Z2 Comics (Release Date: 5/4/2016)
Description
(Wr) Will Tracy, Samuel Sattin (A/CA) Chris Kohler
What if a biological terror agent wiped out most of humanity, and our domesticated animals were left in charge? How would our dogs and cats set about ruling and rebuilding the world? Ransom, the leader of the Dog Tribe, has been murdered by a creature known as the Endark. An English Pointer named Legend reluctantly rises to lead in his place, vowing to kill the monster once and for all. From acclaimed novelist Samuel Sattin and award-winning illustrator Chris Koehler comes LEGEND, where cat technology rules, dog’s partner with hawks, and humans may be the most beastly creatures of all.
Item #: 1523430 • Diamond code: MAR161911 • UPC: 74427199535000111
Why I like it: This is my book of the month, I’m really liking the description of this book, and as an avid dog lover I cannot wait to see how this reads. Print runs should be low on this so be sure to order from your LCS or pay eBay prices later. This book will be huge.
Ultra Cat
ULTRACAT #1
Manufacturer/Publisher: Antarctic Press (Release Date: 5/25/2016)
Description
(W/A/CA) Jose Fonollosa
He came from Spain, he ain’t no bird or plane! It’s Ultracat! With his ultra-speed, ultra-strength and ultra-cuteness, the world’s feistiest feline conquers all criminals, from minor burglars to super-villains to that annoying evildoer pug across the hall! Just don’t ask him to go out in the rain or pass up a nap…
Item #: 1523544 • Diamond code: MAR161068 • UPC: 61072121003100111
Why I like It: Kids books usually have a ton of potential of heating up out of nowhere, I will have my eyes on this one. This is a great book for the young ones and cat lovers as well.
Smaller list this month than in past month’s .However I’m really looking forward to that Legend book from Z2 Comics. So if Z2 Comics can send over an advanced pdf that would be great *Wink Wink*
Until next time CHU, Mel V signing off
Oh, also when it starts to get warmer I will be doing T Shirt Thursdays once a month where A lucky winner will get a Variant cover of their choice on a T-Shirt. Keep your eyes peeled for that.

    1. Thank ya Louie, yea America seems like its gonna be a very dark and sick book ..I love it

  1. Nice write up Mel.
Doesn’t Legend sound a bit like Ennis’s awesome series Rover Red Charlie though? And by a bit like I mean exactly like!

    1. I was thinking the same thing about Legend. Ennis’ Rover Red Charlie was awesome as well…. I have a Golden Retriever and he portrayed my dumbass lovable dog exactly and perfectly in that comic. 🙂

  2. Never heard of Red Rover Charlie ,but I just googled it and man i must say it does look awesome lol I think Legend will be a bit more darker

    1. Thanks for reading Joel..The contest should start soon, and it does not have to be a variant it can be any cover ..I meant to change that in the article lol

  3. Great picks Mel. I’m feeling Legend and America. Not a big Power Rangers fan but that cover is nice. As always good looks. Thanks

  4. Already added Legend to my pullbox, somehow missed America but I am definitely interested in that.
