Ones To Watch: Superman American Alien 1 & 2

The cool thing about modern books is if you look around enough you can find recent issues on the shelves that can be flipped for multiple times cover price. Here is two that can be found on store shelves that sell in the $20-$30 range:

Superman American Alien is a series by Max Landis and a rotating group of All-Star Artists including Nick Dragota, Joelle Jones, Jock, Ryan Sook, Jae Lee, and others. The story chronicles the life of Clark Kent as he grows up and into the hero we all know and love.
Superman American Alien #1 sells for between $14-$20. Superman American Alien #2 sells for between $19.99 and $29.99.
These books do have 1:25 variants, but seem to be selling at about the same price or less. The American Alien #3 1:25 Joelle Jones Variant and American Alien #4 1:25 Jae Lee Variant are way out pacing their regular covers.
American Alien #1 had an estimated print run of 42,842 copies and #2 clocked in at 31,025 copies, pretty low for DC’s highest tier character.
I was able to pick up nice copies of each off shelves today. Be on the look out.

  1. Off topic, I called my LCS to see if he had Walking dead #100, he is asking $40 for 1st prints, and $100 for 2nd prints. So Agentpoyo you are one rich man lol

    1. Haha.. well, most of my 2nd prints I already sold, most weren’t in minty 9.8 type condition. You can’t go wrong with picking up multiple Walking Dead comics though, even the commons end up selling for $10 or more as long as the show continues to be as hot as it is, from what I can tell, there’s no ending in sight anytime soon either.

    2. #100 2nd prints were going for $120 at Wondercon, and they’re only going to go up. $100 is a solid price on a NM copy IMHO.

    3. Those 2nd prints are hard to find. They’ve been very difficult to source for at least a year an an half, so I’m not surprised at all. And it’s not just 100, it’s 97-101 or 102.

  2. Adventures of Superman #14.Joker cover and story by Max Landis from August 2014.Can still find this one for cover at certain stores.

  3. I’ve been pushing this series since it launched. It’s an incredible Modern take on the Superman origin. It’s hands down, the best Superman book on the stands, and probably the best Superman series since Birth Right. The print run is low, as you mentioned, for a Superman book and the variants make that print run more appealing. I think, that since Landis is a screenwriter, that this WILL be adapted at some point in time. Maybe for TV a la Smallville, maybe when they reboot Supes again. I’ve been reading it and loving it.

  4. Great tip, Anthony!
You should point out however that the prices you listed that they are selling for include shipping. So the books themselves are selling for $3 – $6 less than that or include free shipping. It makes a difference since you have to take that out when doing comparisons in $$ paid vs sold.
Still a great tip and some good books to be on the lookout for.

        1. Not at all. If you look, three stores listed a ton of books “good until canceled” for cover or less and the canceled the buy-it-now’s. Really weird.
