Independent Spotlight: Thin #1

In a self-obsessed culture people will do anything to become what we see splashed across the media. Skinny singers, skinny models, skinny actresses. The comic Thin takes a look at how far people will go to become thin.
Here is the solicitation for Thin #1 out September 7th.

Winner of the Famous Monsters Silver Scream Fest Award for Best Graphic Novel! Jon Clark’s Thin is the visceral and utterly disturbing story of a woman mired in obsession and guilt who desperately tries for a miracle cure, only to uncover a deadly horror. The ordinary world of dieting goes to very dark places in this special oversized first issue

The story centers around Doris, a woman who’s life is falling apart around her. Her husband is cheating on her, people make fun of her, and she drowns her sorrows in food. That is until she runs into an old friend who went from being overweight to being gorgous and having men fawn all over her. Doris asks how she did it and reluctantly her friend gives her the doctor’s information. From there things go worse.
Thin is a horror story that deals with the hot button topic of body image, obesity, and our cultures fixation on weight and the crazy things people will do to become thin. Social commentary mixed with a healthy dose of horror and the story is not only topical, but scary.
Jon Clark will be making his first appearance at San Diego Comic Con at The Famous Monsters of Filmland booth #1314. Stop by and tell him you are a friend of CHU’s.

On a side note:
Thin is a book that is done by a friend of mine since childhood. Jon Clark is a talented writer and artist with whom I went to middle school and high school with. We used to skateboard around the small town where we grew up, listen to punk rock, watch horror movies (this is the guy who got me into horror), and most importantly, read comic books.
A little over a year ago, Jon Clark, the writer and artist of Thin, came back to our home town to take care of some personal business. A group of old friends got together for dinner and drinks, conversation, and catching up. Jon asked me if I was still into comic books. I said yes. We talked about comics for a while. I don’t often talk about the site, but ended up telling him about it and how much it has grown since its inception. Jon said he was working on a graphic novel and asked if he could shoot it over to me to look at. I said sure. Back in April of 2015, he sent me the full story but with unfinished art. I read it and loved it. I thought it was very well done. I was very surprised. Needless to say, I offered to send it to some small press guys I knew. He asked me to wait until it was completely finished. About a year ago I got the full, finished work and reread it. I let my wife read it, we both thought it was very good. So I sent him the offer again, let me shop this around to some small press guys I know. He said go for it. Within about a week, everyone I sent it to was asking me to get Jon in touch with them.
American Gothic Press, a publisher I love, and part of the Famous Monsters of Filmland publishing group, asked to have it entered in their Silver Scream contest. It was entered and Jon swept the award for best graphic novel. With not only the opinion of Jon’s old friend thinking it was good, and not only the publisher, but the entire judging committee and the people in attendance, they knew they had to publish this book.

    1. Lol. True. But this is a story about a woman who is way more input than output, like a lot of people in our culture, and wants the quick fix. Mix in a horror element and it is a damn fine story.

    1. It helped that the story and art are good. He has a cleaner Ben Templesmith style to his art. All I did was send the book out to publishers I know and have dealt with and the book did the rest.

    1. LOL I added ya webpage to the latest big gems and this book as well..i think its gonna be a great read

  1. I preordered this a few weeks ago. Of all the books I preordered about 12 this is the one I’m most looking forward too.

  2. This sounds really good. Anybody remember X is for XXL from that movie ABCs of Death? That was a twisted look at getting thin to conform to society. It’s all I can think about looking at this cover.
