SOUTHERN BASTARDS CREATORS RESPOND TO ONLINE HARASSMENT TRENDS WITH CHARITY VARIANT

In response to the recent trend toward online harassment, Jason Latour and Jason Aaron’s SOUTHERN BASTARDS #16 issue will feature a special variant cover to benefit charity. The proceeds raised by this variant will be split between the SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER and the ACLU.

This special “DON’T BE A BASTARD” charity variant cover by series co-creator Latour is part of the ongoing “Roberta Tubb” variant series, showcasing SOUTHERN BASTARDS’ protagonist Roberta Tubb, interpreted by some of comics’ brightest artistic talents.
This is not the first time Latour and Aaron have announced a variant to benefit charity.
The SOUTHERN BASTARDS #10 charity variant raised $18,000 for the victims of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church shooting in Charleston, SC.
SOUTHERN BASTARDS is a bestselling, Eisner Award-winning comic series that has been praised for its honest portrayal of Southern culture.
SOUTHERN BASTARDS #16 Cover B “Don’t Be a Bastard” by Latour (Diamond Code NOV168192) will be available on Wednesday, January 11th. The Final Order Cutoff deadline for comic book retailers is Monday, December 19th.

  1. Latour would know about online bullying judging by his rants about people who don’t agree with his left-wing ideology. He’s butthurt over the election and oh well, suck it up buttercup. That’s why I dropped his book, which only comes out once every 6 months or so anyway. I’m not giving him my money and I sure as Hell ain’t giving it t the SPLC which spreads lies and smears anyone who doesn’t tow their line. Hope other conservatives do the same. Rant over….

  2. Geez….tell us how you really feel. It’s ironic that you wouldn’t give money to an organization that, to paraphrase, “spreads lies and smears anyone who doesn’t tow their line” (like that’s all they do!!) and yet here you are smearing your opinionated, hate “facts” to the rest of us.
Get over yourself and your self-righteous behavior. Act like you’ve been intelligent before and practice your non-spending beliefs to yourself…instead of getting on your self-appointed soap-box and spreading your crap to the rest of us…despite how the election turned out. Charity is charity and every one of them can be picked apart if you tried. Should we look the other way to them, as well…have faith in humanity, not just politics.

  3. Really wish these “artists” would leave their personal agendas at home. Getting pretty tired of having to hear about how life is so awful for these cry baby, tantrum throwing writers and artists because things didn’t go their way! Getting very ,very old, very, very fast! At least I am saving some money on books I “used” to buy.

      1. Can’t agree with you on that one David. I make my living as a professional artist and have yet to push a personal agenda of any sort. Many artists don’t. I may not be telling stories with my art but I still don’t make any attempts to influence anyone who may see my work, clients or audiences, especially when I represent a company that has hired me to do specific work. If a writer has a story to tell and keeps it in the book that if fine. That is part of the world created, but when they start ranting in the real world with more and more of them these days wagging their fingers and lecturing those who don’t agree with them, or flat out throwing tantrums it gets under my skin. Seems they don’t care if they alienate and anger if not half, at least a large percentage of their audience…those who purchase their books. Its a free country and they can do what they want. I don’t agree with them piggybacking personal and political agendas on top of their distributed products. Not one bit. I can avoid giving them my money. Maybe that will make a difference, maybe it won’t. I just can’t stomach supporting a bunch of cry babies who are freaking out because they didn’t get their way on something, regardless what it may be.

        1. I see where you’re coming from, but having an uncle who is a professional artist I’ve seen him both make personal art that expresses a view and create art that may very well be counter to his view but was commissioned, so I see where you are coming from–as I said–and can even agree to some point, but at the same time disagree. You laid out a solid argument here that made me pause and further think though, so props for that.

        2. I actually stopped reading Savage Dragon because I was sick of being brow-beat with Eric Larson’s politics. Truth be told, I am not extremely political and keep my politics to myself. I usually discourage political talk on here because it is one of those things that gets people wound up, this election cycle especially. With that being said I don’t understand why an artist would want to go on the attack of about half their readers/fans. George Perez not wanting to do conventions in states where the people voted for Trump just seems silly. Does he think he will be attacked because of his ancestral origin? Does he think the people will try to send him some where? Just seems silly and sounds like sour grapes. My two cents for what it is worth.

      2. I forgot about that with George Perez. If he’s only going to states which Hillary won, that will be a short tour. The left wing activism seems to be a requirement at Image lately and why would I want to support the books of creators who have essentially spat on me, my friends and family for not joining in their progressive circle jerk? If they spoke truth to power consistently, I’d have less of a problem and may even respect them a bit but their ire only gets up when there’s an “R” in The White House. Not a peep out of them, and barely a whisper from the ACLU either over Obama’s abusing of civil liberties for 8 years

    1. Yeah, I can certainly get political sometimes but really do try not to let anything get out of hand especially on this site. This is one of the very few sites I visit where the vast majority of its readers are respectful towards others. I’ve read many of David’s comments in the past and to be honest this was probably the first one I didn’t see eye to eye or close to eye to eye. Respect his opinion though.

  4. I personally love this cover, and already love Roberta Tubbs after that amazing 14th issue of, “Southern Bastards,” where she came-up against racism, sexism, and all the other, “Isms,” and didn’t take any guff from haters. Having living in more Southern regions, Northern regions, and now the Midwest I’ve seen many viewpoints and beliefs, and I would say, “Southern Bastards,” nails all the good and bad things about the South better than any other comic I’ve read.

  5. It’s a fantastic book – don’t like it? Don’t read it. I suspect it hits a little too close too home for those offended by it. Being a Southerner myself, I find it eerily accurate. I wish my part of the country would finally emerge from the dark ages. Proud and not easily offended liberal snowflake buttercup out!

    1. I actually liked the book, it’s not the book I have an issue with. It’s Latour’s big mouth, or big typing fingers if you prefer. I’d rather spend my $3.50 elsewhere the 2 times a year that SB is published is all

      1. I’m with you guys 100%. My twitter feed is half what it was as I could no longer take it. My read list is even less. Latour, Simone, Larson, Waid, on and on and on. Don’t even get me started on Spencer. I used to try to be understanding and try to listen… but ultimately I blew a gasket with the nonsense and cut it all.

  6. Then go and spend your money elsewhere..IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, GET OUT OF THE COMIC BOOK STORE!!! Sound eerily familiar to the many newly elected “bouncers” of the United States?
Keep your personal opinions to yourselves when anything political comes up and we can enjoy the comic book conversation within this great community Tony has created…ridiculous how each of us think we know what the state needs, is better with, etc….a bunch of Monday morning quarterbacks… with a little information, we could be dangerous.
New first amendment rules….I respect your ability to voice your opinions, now SHUT UP and stop complaining!!! Hypocrisy at its’ best!!!
