One Year Later: 5/25/16 Spec Review

One Year Later Investigator
What up CHU Believers!?! Shawn B. back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off of the word on the street. Either way all of their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to take a look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.
With that said…..let’s do this!
Winners
Spider-Man/Deadpool #1 5th Printing – Mel Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $8
Definitely one of the more sought after series of 2016!
DC Universe Rebirth Special #1 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $10
Even with the high print runs, this one is that popular.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas #1 – Anthony & Poyo Pick
Original Value: $5 Current Value: $7
Hunter S. Thompson would have made for an interesting comic book writer. I’ve been a fan for years. Blank Sketch Covers have seen the biggest jump.
Scooby Apocalypse #1 – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $8
Scooby gets a little dark. Gotta like that. I would have bought more copies too…..if it weren’t for them meddling kids!
Steve Rogers Captain America #1 – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $5 Current Value: $7
Hail Hydra!
Near Misses
Scooby Apocalypse #1 Ben Caldwell Velma Variant – Mel & Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at Midtown.
The variants haven’t been doing as well as the main cover. Besides the blank sketch variant going for a couple few bucks over cover price.
Deadpool #12 – Anthony Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at Midtown.
Still one to hang onto.
Misses
Nighthawk #1 Rafael Albuquerque Variant – Mel Pick
Original Value: $15 Current Value: $10
Disappointing. I feel that Alburquerque is a solid artist and his work is under valued.
Unspecced Winners
Star Wars #19 Action Figure Variant
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $6
Leia in Bespin Gown still selling for a couple bucks over cover price!
Superman: Lois and Clark #8
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $9
Jon Kent as Superboy.

    1. Yeah, I agree with that as well. Nighthawk has and never will be a hugely popular character I think.

  1. Jon kent only has the cape, but no S on the chest, he dont actually have the uniform on and act as Superboy untill Superman 2. If he was Superboy in issue 8 then that means he would of been Superboy in Superman issue 1, but clearly his not

    1. Have to disagree on that one because he is named Superboy in that Lois and Clark book on the last page by Superman. If it was just the cape I can see where your coming from but the cape and the name has to be his first.

  2. Superman: Lois and Clark #8 should be a winner I believe and not a miss on this list

    1. Agreed. It’s under Unspecced Winners. Meaning any books from that release week that went up in value that were not specced by Anthony, Mel or Poyo the evening before release a year ago.

      1. I only like it when my picks are deemed winners.. make sure all of mine moving forward are winners please.. 😉

      2. I only enjoy speccing the winners too man. It’s a tough job but someone’s gotta do it I guess. ?And I’ve bought a lot of misses that I’m still glad I did.

        1. Yeah, I read a bunch of books that will no way ever become valuable or heat up but are just great reads with great art.

  3. Some great books on this list—there are several that still have lots of room to grow imo…..
