Each week hundreds of new comics hit the shelves, each with potential. Some live up to that potential. We pick the ones we feel have the best shot at heating up. Here are our picks of the week for delivery 7/12/17:
Huge week so let’s just jump right in.
Returning Favorites
Shadows of the Grave #6 – it is hard to explain the draw of Richard Corben’s art to non-horror fans, but horror fans love him. He has been around for ever putting out great stuff, for himself, and for the big horror guys like Warren Magazines. This book gets great reviews and is so good.
Scooby Apocalypse #15 – I cannot explain how much I love Scooby Doo. I watched it as a kid and now my kids do too. The horror element of the stories always drew me in, and if you have never seen the background art they used in the cartoons, you should hunt it out. (I will post some of the backgrounds at the bottom of the post). Anyway, this book turns the classic on it’s ear. Issues 1 and 2 go for some good scratch, which shows I am not the only one who loves it.
Mage The Hero Denied #0 – While this is a new series, it is not a new character. This is the third part of the Mage Trilogy. It is the semi-autobiographical / King Author story that follows Kevin Matchstick (Matt Wagner essentially). Great series, and Image is reprinting the original two books.
Edge of Venomverse #2 – I don’t usually get into Marvel books, but this series has me following it. The covers by Mattina are incredible and the stories are not half bad.
The One Everyone is Getting
Dark Days the Casting #1 – Yes it will have a big old print run, mix in the Jim Lee cover and the foil enhancement and you would swear we are in the 1990’s again. The main difference is the quality of story telling, and how DC’s major event books lead up to something. So sure, everyone is getting a copy and you might not have to run out and grab one right away, but keep an eye on the stack as they start to sell out. DC doesn’t always go back for second prints but I am sure this one will.
The Odd Marvel One on the List
Darth Vader #3 – I don’t usually spec on Marvel books but I will on Star Wars. Looks like the Kirak Infil’a guy is turning out to be something. He was briefly shown in issue 2, so look for that one as well, and this could be the next Star Wars key issue.
The One for the Cover Art
Deadpool #33 Jim Lee Card Variant – It almost pains me to say it, because I know Jim Lee isn’t making a cent off the reissued art, but Jim Lee doing a Deadpool cover (well…) is something I cannot pass up, even though I haven’t been chasing the other ones.
Small Press Pick of the Week
Train 8 Zombie Express #1 – I loved the Train to Busan movie. This is loosely based on it, so this could be awesome, but also looks like an American re-make movie is coming. Also, Bliss on Tap does not put out big books, so it will have a tiny print run. This could be a good long term hold.
The Pick of the Week
Howling Revenge of the Werewolf Queen #1 – I cannot express how rabid horror fans are. This Spacegoat book will have a small print run, picks up where the last movie ended, and could be Amazon gold for a long time to come. The Bill Sienkiewicz Variant is awesome and if you can find it…. Which reminds me I need to email my LCS.
Thats it for this week. Let us know what you are spec-ing on.
And in case you missed it, here is this week’s New Comic Spec Review Video for 7/12/17, I apologize in advance for the sound quality on my end, the hotel has a deafening background noise from being in a huge glass dome.

Darth Vader 2 is invariably going to end up a “cameo” through some agreement of the CGC consortium, right!? He gets a full page spread at the end with his name fully announced.
Although, His appearance in DV 3, based on the four page preview, is already pretty badass! I won’t spoil anything, but “all sensors show that it’s art!” (Paraphrasing).
I hope he doesn’t get murdered by Vader. Hopefully he just embarrasses Vader and sends him limping off, tail between his leg.
Vader’s mission is to kill a Jedi and take his lightsaber, so he will most likely die this issue. He could appear in a past story later though.
I came across a Scooby Apocalypse #2 at my LCS the other week. I kinda wish I had started reading that series when it came out. Perhaps I’ll pick up the trades.
