What up CHU!?! Shawn B., the One Year Later Investigator, back with another One Year Later round up, where we take a look at some of the comics that Anthony, Mel and Poyo specced on one year ago. Their specs turn out to be quick flips, slow burns, straight up misses, straight up winners and on and on. Sometimes they spec with their hearts out of their passion for comics. Sometimes they spec based on data. And sometimes they spec based off the word on the street. Either way, all their specs appeal to a few or many collectors whether it is due to them having similar taste in writing or art, or just an opportunity for a collector to flip a book and make money to “support their habit”. So, this is our weekly chance to look back at how some of our buys from a year ago are doing today.
We get a rare appearance from DrunkWooky this week (Mel was on vacation in Puerto Rico I believe.) And the two winners are exclusive variants.
Winners
Darth Vader #25 Most Good Hobby JTC General Tagge Action Figure Variant – DrunkWooky Pick
Original Value: $20(Color) $30(B&W) Current Value: $35(Color) $50(B&W)
These values are based off of many sales on the bay. Most Good Hobby still has copies for original value.
Reborn #1 NYCC Exclusive Sketch Variant – Poyo Pick & Anthony Pick
Original Value: $50 (This is what they were selling on the bay for right after NYCC 2016. Available for purchase at the con for $10.) Current Value: $60
Still the most sought-after cover and will shoot up if this goes to production and the series picks up steam.
Near Misses
Reborn #1 Jock Variant – Mel Pick. Anthony & Poyo Picked the series.
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at on-line retailers.
Wasn’t this optioned? Every single cover besides the 2nd Printing and the NYCC variant is available at Midtown right now. I swear this was up a few bucks and sold out during the quick flip time. NYCC 2016 and Millar created a ton of buzz on this.
Clone Conspiracy #1 – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $5 Current Value: $5 Still available at Midtown
Beautiful Dell Otto cover. I am considering this a slow burn and will check back in next year on it. I mean seriously for a regular cover this one is bad ass.
Misses
Darth Vader #25 Joe Quesada Color Variant Cover – DrunkWooky Pick
Original Value: $100 Current Value: $100
Big ticket cover from jump. You may have tracked down copies for far less than the original value and there have been recent sales for $100. Vader’s cape looks cool but in general I don’t see the high dollar value even if it is a 1:100 variant.
Star Wars: Han Solo #4 Incentive Dustin Nguyen Variant Cover – DrunkWooky Pick
Original Value: $15 Current Value: $15 or less. Still available at on-line retailers.
Nguyen does have a cool style but I am not sure if it fits all story types.
Darth Vader #25 Incentive Michael Cho Variant Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $30 Current Value: $30
Simple but sharp cover. Could have gone in Near Misses. Just not a lot of recent sales activity.
Howard The Duck #11 Variant Chip Zdarsky Last Issue Cover – Mel Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at on-line retailers.
Great portrait cover of Howard with a look that says, “Just the facts ma’am”.
Mosaic #1 Incentive Khary Randolph Variant Cover – Mel Pick & Poyo Pick on Regular Cover (Still available at cover price.)
Original Value: $15 Current Value: $15
To be fair Mel only said this was one to keep an eye on for obvious reasons. We can probably take our eye off it for now.
Lost Boys #1 – Poyo Pick
Original Value: $4 Current Value: $4 Still available at on-line retailers.
Poyo did say he was going out on a limb here. The blood sucking Brady Bunch did not heat up but it was still one of the best movies of my pre-teen years.
Unspecced Winners – No Unspecced Winners from this week a year ago.

Love this segment, hope you guys keep doing these
Me too.. I love seeing how wrong I was with my picks. It’s great! 🙂
Even with Mark Millar signing a development deal with Netflix, there seem to be so many copies of Reborn #1 floating around that it’s hard to envision most of the covers ever appreciating. There’s just way more supply than demand.
Ive still got the reborn, the only one i bought, we shall see
The best Reborn is this one.. one of a kind!
Yes, I had Francavilla commission this for me last year at MondoCon. He even tweeted it. 🙂
