Todd McFarlane’s SPAWN character sets the stage for a historic celebration as it breaks the record for the longest-running creator-owned comic in the world! To mark this momentous occasion, McFarlane has gathered a team of superstars from the comic industry to contribute to this giant sized 72-page book.
The big news for SPAWN #300 is that award-winning artist, Greg Capullo (Batman), returns to illustrate SPAWN. Capullo first brought his talents to Image Comic’s longest running title, with issue #16, leading to a visually-stunning run as the book’s featured artist, culminating in the hallmark 100th issue.
Following his seminal work on DC Comics’ iconic Batman, Capullo will be the main featured interior artist on SPAWN #300, alongside another major revelation…for the first time since 1995, Todd McFarlane, one of the top-selling artists in comic book history, will return to pencil and ink interior artwork of the character he created during his high school days!
“I created SPAWN back when I was a teenager hoping to someday break into the comic book industry,” said Todd McFarlane, SPAWN creator, and Image President. “Now, over 40 years later, not only was I able to have a career drawing and writing comics, but SPAWN has been by my side for most of that journey. Even more exciting, SPAWN is becoming the longest running creator-owned comic in the world!
“The group of creative folks helping out on this historic SPAWN 300th issue is something that I hope thrills the ‘inner 15-year-old” in all of us. Plus, to have Greg Capullo come back to this title after so many long years, is what has me most excited as I personally consider him to be the top talent drawing in our industry today” said McFarlane.
The superstar creative team doesn’t end with Capullo and McFarlane. Current SPAWN artist, Jason Shawn Alexander, fan-favorite J. Scott Campbell (Danger Girl, Spider-Man), rising star Jerome Opeña (Uncanny X-Force, Seven to Eternity) and best-selling writer Scott Snyder (Batman, Metal, Wytches), all bring their talents aboard to help usher in SPAWN’s next grand evolution.
“The birth of Image Comics in 1992 was an exciting time, but there are few moments I remember more vividly than getting my hands on the first issue of SPAWN,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher and Chief Creative Officer at Image Comics. “Todd was already a comics superstar at that point – but SPAWN vibrated with an energy all its own and I think everybody knew it was destined not only to be a hit but to stand the test of time. The fact that we’re approaching issue 300 nearly 30 years later is a testament to its impact not just on Image, but the industry as a whole. Go, Todd!”
SPAWN #300, a 72-page full-color comic book, celebrating 27 years, and counting, of the hit independent series with an all-star lineup of comics creators, will be in stores August 29, 2019. The title will feature 12 covers by McFarlane, Capullo, Campbell, Opeña, and Alexander, including gorgeous black and white “Artist Edition” variants showcasing the original, inked artwork of both Capullo and McFarlane. This historic, oversized issue will retail for $7.99.
I’ve always enjoyed Spawn & like him or hate him, I love the Toddfather’s passion towards his creation.
I’ll buy anything they throw at me.
I was looking at my varied back issues just yesterday…the art, covers, spec $$ for many…just wow! Hard to pick favorites from that run.
#intoddwetrust #testify blind adam out
will be the most over printed spawn book since #1?
over under different 15 shop covers(not factoring trade virgin ect) ?
I’ll take the over on the $15!
@reebok…I highly doubt this issue will reach the print runs that were on Spawn #2 – #16+. Highly, highly doubt it. It wont even be the 20th highest printed Spawn book.
Do you even know if Todd is allowing store variants? I highly doubt he will, given the criteria he seems to have set in order for any given creator to work on this book. Todd wont let some joe blow artist do some random cover. Todd loves controlling his pet and I dont see him letting stores and random artists having any ‘control’ over this historic issue.
So it’s this and, “Cerebus,” to be creator-owner and get this high in issue-count. Plus, Todd didn’t turn into a hateful monster like Dave Sim so that’s good!
I believe Spawn will be longest creator owned title, with issue #301.
with Savage Dragon not so far behind
I hope Todd continues this ASM copy cat cover trend all the way to 328. I think he should swipe every ASM issue from his iconic run on that title. Make them the new B covers for the Spawn books. So many great covers from that run.
And Marvel has been repurposing art from Artists in their “Hidden Gem” variants without cutting checks to the original artists. It’s happened to Todd several times. Hope he makes a ton of his Marvel swipes.
12 covers? Ugh….Why does the comic world put up with this?
Probably going to homage all the great 300 covers in comics…I’ll pick the one i like and that’s it.
I agree it is a lot of covers, but its not nearly as many as any given Marvel or DC ‘landmark’ issue. And if its Capullo, Opena, McFarlane & Campbell, then at least it is top of the industry talent doing these covers. Plus, if there are 4 artists, w/ 1 cover each and each cover having a sketch, B&W and Colour, then there are only 4 ‘images’ to pick from. Maybe its 6 artists with 1 colour and 1 sketch each. Either way, Im very much looking forward to having these McFarlane classic ASM swipes in my PC.
I agree..the ASM McFarlane swipes will be pretty cool. Likely the ones it grab, and trade dress only.
Anyone who does a cover also has to do interior work. That was the deal.
I’m very positive this will still be a long-term value book. 100 and 200 were overprinted as well, and those do great.
Which is the cover to get? Todd’s?
Recent sales put both #100 and #200 at about $10 books. Seems the newstand of #100 fetches a slight bit more.
#200 shows to have had a print run of 65,448.
#100 shows to have had a print run of 143,493.
I’d say if you’re a Spawn fan pick up one or two but I wouldn’t go heavy on these. Maybe in 10 or 20 years they’ll be worth double cover. 😉
I’ll be getting 2 copies for sure. I was introduced to Spawn from a friend back in Jr. High. First comic was Spawn #1 and then Spawn Dark Ages #1. This is a must have for me.
How is Jerome Opena a rising star? He’s been around for 15 years. He’s a superstar in my book and on the Capullo level. .
