Poyo’s Trade and Hardcover Picks of the Week

We shouldn’t just collect or flip books, we should also read them. A good story can make your purchase well worth the money spent if you ask me. After all, we buy books to read for entertainment right? Even if you can’t flip them, reading is just as rewarding.

We tend to focus on mostly the floppy copies each week and kind of ignore the trades and hardcovers that come out week after week.

These can be one off books, collected editions or special editions.

This first pick has my interest.

Springtime in Chernobyl HC

April 26, 1986, Chernobyl: the reactor core of the nuclear power plant begins to melt. It is the greatest nuclear disaster of the twentieth century.

A cloud laden with radionuclides travels thousands of miles in every direction, contaminating a populace unaware of its danger and who cannot protect themselves. At that time, Emmanuel Lepage was 19 years old watching and listening, incredulous, to the news on television.

22 years later, April 2008: he travels to Chernobyl to report, both in writing and drawings, about the lives of the survivors and their children living on the highly contaminated land. Upon making the decision to travel there, Emmanuel has the feeling that he is defying death, and when he finds himself on a train to Ukraine, where the old power station is located, a question keeps popping up in his mind: What am I doing here?

Advance solicited for May release! A memoir of disaster, death, and tragedy, linking the events of the nuclear meltdown to the survivors who are still dealing with its……

Pre Code Classics Space Action World War III HC Vol 01

Ace Magazines’ Space Action and World War III featuring interior work by Jim McLaughlin, Ken Rice, Lou Cameron, Bill Molno, Rocco Mastroserio. and the legendary Mike Sekowsky of later Star Hawkins fame. Collects Space Action #1-3 (June to October 1952) and World War III #1-2 (March 1952 to May 1953).

I’m a junkie for the golden age space comics and this one includes some World War within it as well. It’s certainly knocking two birds with one stone.

I really could go broke buying all these trades and hardcovers. I guess these save me money cause owning the originals would be even cooler.

I couldn’t imagine what WWIII would look like in today’s world but poking back in time for such stories make great reads.

The next pick is special. Cruzzer reached out and suggested a new graphic novel to me and put me in touch with the author, Chag Lowry.

The book is Soldiers Unknown and I believe it’s official launch date is August 20th but you can order it here.

Here’s the solicitation:

The Klamath River, 1918. The native Yurok people of Northern California have been untouched by the savage world war raging in Europe–until now.
Three cousins are called to serve a nation that has given little but cruelty to their people. Thrust into battle on the Western Front, these young men struggle to preserve their humanity while facing the unspeakable horrors of the greatest military conflict ever known.
Here’s a really good interview article that goes more in depth with Chag Lowry on this graphic novel.
I was sent a review copy and just got it in the mail a few days ago. I hope to find some spare time to sit down and read to get a review up with some more art from the book posted to give everyone a feel for the interiors, which I think are awesome with the quick skim I did after it arrived.
Stick around for the long review I hope to get posted once I read it.

I’m trying to keep these more limited. There are just so many good trades and graphic novels that hit shelves each week along with the floppies.

Let us know if you’re into picking up trades, hardcovers or other original graphic novels.
