Things I Like and Dislike for the Week of December 11th, 2019

It’s that time again, where I tell you what’s really grinding my gears for the week of December 11th, 2019.

Some weeks it’s mostly likes, other weeks it’s dislikes.

So what’s grinding my gears this week?

USPS and TFAW Packages

All it took was a cold but polite reminder note left on the mailboxes to make sure the postman put the cardboard mailers not intended to be folded, mangled and shoved into the tiny mailboxes to leave them in pristine condition in the parcel boxes that they have.

I had another TFAW package with 2 comics in their single cardboard mailers they use arrive in perfect condition because it was left in in the parcel box.

12 Days of Christmas Giveaway

It’s a whole lotta fun. Hope you all are enjoying it this year so far. Just 4 more days to go…

That’s all I got for this week, it’s been hectic which is normal around this time of year.

        1. Yeah… If I upgrade mine I have to replace them all. I’m not buying everyone a new mailbox. USPS deliveries can just use the eff’n parcel boxes that are available or drop the damn package on the porch. 🙂

          1. I assume you pay dues/monthly fees? Petition the association to flip the bill for the upgrade! Start a grassroots movement. Make a speech at a board meeting. Get signatures supporting your cause.

            You can do this!

            1. Nope… No HOA… Mailboxes owned by post office now… They only replace if damaged. I’m not spending that much effort to get everyone an upgrade bigger box when the postman has parcel boxes he can use or drop off.

  1. I finally had a weekend off and fixed my ps4. It was overheating and just changed the fan and the thermal paste. Been playing the new call of duty game and going to pick up the new stat wars game later today. Yesterday, Target had a sale for buy 2 games, get 1 free. My wife’s cousin, her manager and myself got the star wars game and split the total 3 ways. Which came to be $40 each. Saved $20 lol.

    1. My friend cut a hole for the fan got another couple months out of his PS4. Sadly most Japanese electronics use bad thermal paste usually the square sticker kind. Arctic Silver is so much better and lasts forever. I’ve repaired a few Mitsubishi projection TVs in my time.

  2. Forgot to check the easy-to-miss box to add bags and boards to a non-pre-order shipment from TFAW. 8 comics in that easily bendable, not-weatherproof at-all mailer somehow came through unscathed. It was bent AND damp from the rain…. But the comics were fine. Yet, my pre orders which are in a solid mailer with bags and boards saw 50% of them with at least one spine indent…..

    1. I actually intentionally opted out of the bag and boards. Marvel uses some kind of ink that runs off on the boards in transit. Board don’t provide much more protection in those mailers they use anyway…would rather see if not using a board makes a difference with the ink rubbing off or not.

  3. I’m thankful that all my packages go to my local post office if they don’t fit in the box. It’s a 5 minute walk from my house so it’s super convenient.

Someone mentioned not getting comics bagged and boarded because marvels ink rubs off on the boards? I’ve never heard of this myself. Anyone else have this issue? I’d never ever ship a single comic or any amount of comics without being bagged and boarded first.

    1. Just about every comic I ship I put in a current bag, then i insert that bagged comic into a silver age bag with a silver age board. Therefor the comic is sufficiently protected and never touches the board.

Obviously no place online offers such a service. And I’ve received so many damaged comics with color loss onto the backing board (mainly marvel) that I rarely ever buy new comics online unless my shop can’t order/hold them for me.

The color loss doesn’t appear to transfer to adjacent comics, so I’d rather take a change without the board.

Now, if you’re getting more than 2 or 3 comics delivered at a time where they get thrown into a box instead of a rigid mailer…maybe that’s a different answer as far as risk of damage during shipment…

Some seem to think it’s the style of board or humidity that may be the issue, and not the quality of ink companies like Marvel use…but I’ve ordered from every large online dealer of new releases comics and every one I’ve had this issue with…so I know it’s not me.

Needless to say, for the extra 5 cents Its worth the double bag to me.

    2. I have followed Drogs complaints about the Marvel ink. I totally can see what he is talking about. Recent Modern Marvel’s do have a terrible track record for ink rub.

  4. I went all out on the midtown comics sale got 25 copies of Howard the Duck 1 (gwenpool) 25 copies of punisher 218 6 copies of the 1:25 variant and 10 copies of spider-Gwen 1 paid just over $100. Every single one appears to be solid 9.8 candidates. 🙂

  5. Just ordered from TFAW. I’m not sure I understand… you mean USPS (the mailman) can just put it in a new larger parcel box they have? I plan to leave a note asking him to put any slightly larger mailer envelopes on the porch, unless you’re saying TFAW made a problem.

      1. https://www.budgetmailboxes.com/auth-florence-cbu-mailbox-1570-cluster-box-unit–16-box-unit–1570-16af.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4ujytM6o5gIVF4iGCh23OwVzEAQYASABEgKT2PD_BwE

I think he gets mail in one of these….where they’ll put the larger parcels in one of the larger doors and leave the key in your box.

Now, if that larger door was already occupied maybe the USPS person felt delivering the package was more important than protecting it from damage….

        1. But yeah, that’s simliar to the boxes we have for the neighborhood. The mail centers save the USPS people time so they’re not driving to every single house to deliver. Most new neighborhoods have this implemented from the old school mailbox at the edge of your yard..
