Scout Comics announced several imprints launching a few weeks back. One of them is Black Caravan, which is a horror/supernatural line. The first several books have been announced, including a returning favorite that was previously published by Image and Dark Horse Comics.
First up is Perhapanauts, a group of cryptids that fight off creatures that slip through a dimensional rip. You can check out the previous series here
The Electric Black returns for a second series with an all-new #1. From Joseph Schmalke and Rich Woodall.
Broken Souls Ballad from Massimo Rosi.
Provenance of Madness from Kiyarn Taghan and Christian DiBari
And the most impressive title is Phantom Starkiller from Killer Bootlegs and Joseph Scmalke. Based on the Killer Bootleg action figure from Super 7. Think a cross between Skeleton and Darth Vader.
I did quite well selling the NYCC Phantom Starkiller exclusives a few years back. They still seem to sell almost as fast as they’re listed..
I’m looking forward to the comic now..
I have no opinion on these specific books. But I will say that there are tremendous spec opportunities available in the next 3-4 months. Retailers across the country will be cutting their orders to the bone in anticipation of reduced foot traffic. They’re more likely to hold the line on guaranteed sellers and quick to jettison anything they might have taken a flyer on before.
Small press titles of all sorts will have smaller print runs than they otherwise would. If those publishers die, the books they produced likely go nowhere. But if they survive, there are bound to be some huge winners.
On the large press side, retailers will keep ordering ongoings, but the first titles they cull will be one-shots and miniseries. Look to the mid-90s collapse which gave huge winners like Punisher KTMU, Carnage Mind Bomb, Carnage IAWL, etc. Those retailers kept ordering the ongoings, but one-shots get scarce in a hurry.
If you prefer safer gambles, now would be an interesting time to bump your orders for long-running titles to 5 copies. People will always be trying to put runs together of long-running titles. And scarce issues inevitably become expensive. Pay special attention to any titles that end. Look at the prices on the final several issues of titles that died in the 90s collapse like Ghost Rider and Punisher. Retailers are VERY quick to reduce orders on anything ending so as not to get stuck with them.
These are more “spec” plays than “flip” plays and I realize this site is dominated by the equivalent of comic day-trading. But if you’re willing to fill a short box and leave it untouched in your closet for a few years, this summer presents quite an opportunity.
All this has happened before. All this will happen again.
History does indeed repeat itself.. I guess the difference from today compared to the 90s is today is caused by a pandemic while the 90s was just the industry collapsing in on itself.
As for foot traffic decreasing, we can be sure of that based on two things.. COVID-19 where people are still avoiding others and being cautious and now due to businesses that aren’t not essential, a lot of folks are out of work, so they don’t have the money to buy the non-essentials. Expect less foot traffic in other areas of the non-essentials as well. I think this pandemic is a wake up call for a lot of folks..
“But if you are willing to fill a short box and leave it untouched” I have probably 200 short boxes (or more still converting long boxes into short boxes). Yes, we focus a lot on short term flips here. But we do long and midterm as well. I have been saying that the print runs on these upcoming books will be some of the smallest we will see and people, if they have the money to do so, should be grabbing the pandemic books when they come out.
Over all liked your entire comment, very insightful. Much appreciated.
Electric Black is such a underated comic! I love horror anthologies and especially the Tales from the Crypt variants they brought out in first series. Hope they continue with them awesome covers.
I really like it. Joseph Schmalke is such a quirky and cool guy.
All that Michael Turner Supergirl stuff is chugging along, the SDCC variants, and then regular copies of Batman Superman 8 and Supergirl 1 Turner covers both 1st and 2nd print moving books for a solid month.
Good for me since Turner Supergirl is the only Turner I really cared to collect have all the SDCC variant graded 9.8 and really good copies worth sending to the graders for BS #8 and Supergirl #1
I just rebagged all them.
