CovrPrice Top 10 for Week Ending June 18, 2020

Since Covrprice.com  came on the scene, they have become a go to spot for watching eBaytrends on comics. They scour thousands of eBay sales to cultivate data to spotlight the hottest selling comics. Here is this week’s Top Ten Comics: (Please note, potential spoilers do follow, and, these results are for auction that closed last week. )

1.LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #6 (DC, 2020)
Okay, so this was the hottest new title last week and had big market movement with It sold 84 copies, had a 7-day trend of 385% and had a high sale of $89.99 for a CGC 9.8 pre-sale. Now, here’s the thing… the “first” appearance of these new characters are incredibly messy… maybe even one of the messiest appearances ever. To sum it up quickly, GOLD LANTERN appears in (at least) EIGHT cameo appearances before this “full” appearance. Can you have 8 cameo appearances? Or does one just become the real “first”. If we had to pick one, our money would go to LEGION OF SUPERHEROES #1.

GOLD LANTERN is both on the “A” cover AND on the inside where he’s clearly seen with his first line of dialogue. Or, since he hasn’t been named in this issue, would this still be a full cameo? Man, what a messy first appearance. Monster Boy has been all over the place but has had no dialogue and has only been named on the cover of LEGION #6. The big questions are: Which issue collectors will favor? How all this will all this affect issue #6? Does any of this even matter?

2. SNOW BLIND #1 (BOOM!, 2015)
Deadline reported that “Multiple bids” are in on Snow Blind. This adaptation of the graphic novel by Ollie Masters (The Kitchen) has Jake Gyllenhaal attached to star, with Gustav Möller, who directed the 2018 Danish thriller The Guilty, making his English-language directorial debut. The script will be written by Patrick Ness, the author-screenwriter who wrote A Monster Calls and is adapting Lord of the Flies for director Luca Guadagnino at Warner Bros.” This news lit a big fire under this book and sold 13 copies, had a 7-day trend of 866% and had a high sale of $61 for a raw copy.

3. BATMAN #92 JIMENEZ 1:25 PUNCHLINE VARIANT (DC, 2020)
Behold, the first full appearance of PUNCHLINE emerges. This issue was HIGHLY anticipated, pre-selling as early as March for $65. Hench, stores and sellers ordered a ton of these. Flash forward to June 10th as copies flood sites like eBay. With a flood comes price drops. However, this variant has been holding its ground. It’s sold 96 copies JUST in the last few days and at a consistent $50. With so many copies listed, this will most likely dip by next week. However, we’re watching it… just to see how it does and if it can buck the trends. If so, maybe Punchline will actually be the only recent new character to make it. It sold 96 copies, had a 7-day trend of 107% and had a high sale of $74.95 for a raw copy.

4. LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #6 ALEX GARNER “B” VARIANT (DC, 2020)
This was the front runner for LOSH #6, featuring the first full appearance of the new Dr. Fate, Gold Lantern, and Monster Boy. It sold 27 copies, had a 7-day trend of 380% and had a high sale of $29.95 for a raw copy. As we write this, the A cover has taken the lead.

5. ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4 (MARVEL, 2011)Man… is this book moving. A raw copy hit a massive $690 raw (poly-bagged) via auction. Seriously, as we said… this is NUTS!! Keep in mind that MOST raw copies are selling for $300 to $450… which is still crazy! It sold 62 copies, had a 7-day trend of 147% and had a high sale of $1,419.94 for a CGC 9.8.

6. SPIDER-MAN #1 ADI GRANOV HIP HOP VARIANT (MARVEL, 2016)
This was an increase that no one could have anticipated. This variant has caught up to the first print on ULTIMATE FALLOUT 4, which doesn’t make a ton of sense. But here we are. It sold 12 copies, had a 7-day trend of 575% and had a high sale of $599 for a raw copy.

7. SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #7 RIOS 1:20 VARIANT (BOOM!, 2020)
Fans are loving this series, though it’s not highly ordered by shops. This has made the 1:20 variant difficult to find, sending folks to look for it on-line. It sold 10 copies, had a 7-day trend of 681% and had a high sale of $40 for a raw copy.

8. ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4 PICHELLI 2ND PRINT VARIANT (MARVEL, 2011)
Look, Miles Morales is the hottest character right now. His first appearance, subsequent printings, and key variants are going NUTS. Every week there’s some new high sale. This 2nd print variant is no different as it sold 35 copies, had a 7-day trend of 167% and had a high sale of $500 for a CGC 9.8.

9. SUPERMAN #14 RECALLED EDITION (DC, 2019)
LEGION OF SUPERHEROES #6 was one of the hottest books of the week last week as it featured a new DR. FATE, MONSTER BOY and a full appearance of GOLD LANTERN. However, while those were hitting $25, it was revealed that both Gold Lantern and Monster Boy appeared in this issue of Superman #14 (as well as Supergirl #33 recalled issue). HOWEVER, there’s more to this… and it’s complicated! We’ll dove deeper up above (see #1). For now, this issue sold 25 copies, had a 7-day trend of 196% and had a high sale of $81 for a CGC 9.8.

10. BITTER ROOT #8 VISION “PURPLE RAIN” HOMAGE VARIANT (IMAGE, 2020)
The film homage variants have been doing VERY well over the past several months. The “Do The Right Thing” homage for issue #6 is still a $100+ book (despite the 2nd print sharing the same cover). With that in mind, collector’s quickly bought up this Purple Rain homage. However, it was an open order “B” cover, which made it more accessible and also held the price down. Keep in mind, this variant still has a lot of promise as both the Batgirl and G.I. Joe/Snake Eyes homage command top dollar in the aftermarket. This sold 17 copies, had a 7-day trend of 254% and had a high sale of $14.99 for a raw copy.

  1. “Can you have 8 cameo appearances?”

Yes. A cameo is a cameo. A full is a full. You can have an infinite number of cameo appearances and before a full appearance,

But a first is a first…regardless of its a cameo or full.

I believe Jason Todd had a number of cameos before a “full” appearance. The first cameo, Batman 357, is barely even a cameo…not named, no dialogue. Just some kid with his parents.

  2. I could see Batman Secret Files #3 making this list in a few weeks. I’ve been wrong before, though.
There is some heat on SIKTC #7 for the Wynd preview, also, from what I have heard.

    1. The variant is doing nicely on SIKTC. My lcs has it over priced so I skipped it. It may regret it. Had no problems getting BSF 3 though.

      1. I never saw SIKTC #7 B. I had some issues finding the regular cover, on Thursday. I usually have no problem getting that book. I believe that issue was under-ordered due the pandemic.
There were still copies of Secret Files, around my area, as well, for cover price. I just got it because I heard it was Punchline’s 3rd appearance (which I have no idea about).
        *Spoiler*
Inside of the book Joker tells Deathstroke that he knows that Bruce Wayne is Batman, and what the plan is to take him down. This feels like the official beginning of Joker War, imo. Maybe, there is another comic out there that I am unaware of. That could easily be the case, because I don’t read a ton of DC.
It’s a pretty low ordered book, as well.
It seems like both of those books check a lot of boxes.

        1. After seeing the cover for SIKTC #8 1:25, I found it online for $40, after shipping. It has a great Erica Slaughter cover. It has already sold for $75. I wish that I had bought more.

            1. And at nearly the exact time I was posting that, I received a refund with an explanation : oversold. *Sigh*

  3. Not one of this week’s books but I just realized I had overlooked a future gem and picked up numerous copies of Metal Men 2 cover A for the first full appearance & first cover appearance of the Nth Metal Man. What a great idea with incredible potential. A lot of directions a writer could take this character and a possible major player in the DCU. Got them at a discount too.

  4. According to CGC, Hell Arisen 3 is first full appearance of Punchline. And the market agrees. That book had a relatively low print run compared to Batman 89 and 92 as well.
