#10 THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH #1 FRISON COVER B (IMAGE, 2020) As noted by the Hollywood Reporter, “James Tynion Comic ‘Department of Truth’ Picked Up by Elisabeth Murdoch, Stacey Snider’s Sister (Exclusive)” This lit a huge fire under all the various covers… and spilling over into the already scorching hot SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN from BOOM!. This Frison B cover sold 28 copies, had a 7-day trend of 183% and had a high sale of $137.50 for a CGC 9.8.
#9 THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH #1 (IMAGE, 2020) As noted, this series is on fire now. James Tynion IV has quickly become the new “it” guy in comics. This standard cover sold 45 copies, had a 7-day trend of 125% and had a high sale of $154.24 for a CGC 9.8.
#8 X-FORCE #1 W/ DEADPOOL TRADING CARD (MARVEL, 1991) X-FORCE #1 is a holdover this week, and still selling incredibly well due to high demand for this early Deadpool trading card polybagged with this issue. It sold 53 copies, had a 7-day trend of 126% and had a high sale of $53.99 for a raw copy.
#7 MARVEL SPOTLIGHT #4 (MARVEL, 1972) Last week, on WANDAVISION (SPOILER), Wanda wanders into Agnes’ basement to discover the DARKHOLD, a book of ancient scrolls written by a Marvel villain named Chthon, the world’s first dark magician. Going back to DOCTOR STRANGE, one book was missing from the library of Kamar Taj. It’s thought that it was the Darkhold, which appears to be the source of Agnes’ powers. If Marvel is introducing the Darkhold, it could introduce a much darker side of the Marvel Universe. This issue is the first appearance of the Darkhold and sold 32 copies, had a 7-day trend of 230% and had a high sale of $429 for a CGC 9.0.
#6 FANTASTIC FOUR #185 (MARVEL, 1977) Again, last week, on WANDAVISION (SPOILER #2), the twins were introduced to Agnes’ pet rabbit Señor Scratchy (also seen in Episode 2). In the comics, Agatha Harkenss (who yup, SPOILER… is the true identity of Agnes) has a son named NICHOLAS SCRATCH, whose first appearance is in this issue. Nicholas is also a powerful wizard/supervillain in the Marvel comic universe that has direct connections to both Mephisto and Dormammu. This connection feels deliberate and a hint of his possible appearance. However, at the same time… it could just be a fun easter egg. Regardless, it sold 41 copies, had a 7-day trend of 180% and had a high sale of $29.99 for a raw copy.
#5 CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 (MARVEL, 1989) Monica Rambeau has had multiple superhero identities… and all have seen increases in sales. However, her first solo as CAPTAIN MARVEL series really took off this week. It sold 27 copies, had a 7-day trend of 311% and had a high sale of $349.99 for a CGC 9.8.
#4 TASKMASTER #3 (MARVEL, 2021) As noted, this issue features the first appearance of Taegukgi. This standard-issue sold 57 copies, had a 7-day trend of 400% and had a high sale of $29 for a raw copy. It sold 89 copies, had a 7-day trend of 106% and had a high sale of $27.75 for a raw copy.
#3 SPAWN #1 (IMAGE, 1992) Recently, SPAWN creator Todd McFarlane announced 4 new Spawn ongoing series focusing on GUNSLINGER SPAWN, MEDIEVAL SPAWN, REDEEMER SPAWN and SHE-SPAWN. Spawn has always been a consistent seller on COVRPRICE. However, this news gave his first issue a nice boost in sales and price. It sold 89 copies, had a 7-day trend of 118% and had a high sale of $207.50 for a CGC 9.8.
#2 BLACK COTTON #1 (SCOUT, 2021) This is a very thoughtful and provocative book that earned its place on this list for simply being a great read. “Set in an alternate reality where the social order of “white” and “black” is reversed, an elitist family, the Cottons, are rocked by a tragic shooting that begins to unravel long-standing family secrets that could not only destroy the family but also divide the fragile social climate of the world.” It’s highly recommended. Apparently, the market thought so as well. It sold 41 copies, had a 7-day trend of 342% and had a high sale of $16.99 for a raw copy.
#1 AVENGERS THE INITIATIVE FEATURING REPTIL #1 (MARVEL, 2009) Per Newsarama, Marvel is billing Reptil as “the next biggest hero”. The article notes that “Marvel is positioning the young, Mexican-American superhero who can turn into dinosaurs as its next star. Marvel Comics will bring former Avengers Academy student Reptil to prominence in May in his first solo limited series..” Yeah, a hero who can turn into Dinosaurs… yep, it’s a no-brainer. With this news, his first appearance in this issue went nuts price-wise. It sold 12 copies, had a 7-day trend of 1,266% and had a high sale of $69.99 for a raw copy
Picked up 2 Reptil’s out of the back issue bins this morning, one at cover, one at a buck!
Wasn’t the Darkhold introduced in Agents if Shield already?
Yes and also on Runaways
Neither of those shows are considered cannon in the MCU according to Feige. Or so I’ve heard.
Picked up a CM giant size for $2.99…flipped for 10x that amount. It was not NM.
I believe there is also a 35 cent price variant for the Fantastic Four #185
